what are WWE vocals?I can't get past the ridiculous WWE vocals of most of the death metal that I hear.
what are WWE vocals?
Yea Mastodon is pretty good. I like Zakk Wylde but sometimes BLS sounds like they try to emulate Ozzy too much, their new album is good though.
I hadn't heard kingdom of sorrow, they were surprisingly good.
Is it crappier because it's quieter? Because if that's the only reason then I suggest you keep that as a pristine copy of something untouched by the loudness war.
WWE, WWF - fake TV wrestling. I'm thinking of guys like the Undertaker, who talk in ridiculous monster voices when they give interviews. Most death metal vocals that I hear remind me of The Undertaker doing an impression of Frankenstein, usually with pretty intricate guitar work going on in the background.
'Death growl.' You may have also heard some 'hardcore' vocals, which is like a death growl with head cold.
Mikael Akerfeldt is arguably the baddest motherfucker on the planet when it comes to death growls, but also sings like a goddamn angel.
If you want to 'understand' death metal vocals a little better, Opeth is a great way to do it. There are ten-minute prog-rock masterpieces that have maybe a minute of harsh vocals; but they absolutely make the fucking song. Beauty must be punctuated with brutality (yeah, I know, that sounds kinda rapey).
Does anyone like Trivium? I think they're kinda tight and have some nice melodies.
Early Trivium is great. I don't think it fully qualifies as metalcore. It sounds more like thrash metal.
if you love BTBAM, you prob would also like Protest the Hero, Asking Alexandria, Memphis May Fire and Miss May I
if you don't already listen to them
That's just not a metal scream. It sounds like world's longest awkward orgasm.
When you say 'metal scream' the first thing that comes to my mind is something like This Calling. Okay, 'metalcore,' but I think screaming is part of the 'metal-'.
Even if you don't like ATR, I'd think you gotta admit it's a hell of an opening for an album.
Too bad their newest album is shit.
Agreed. I use to love Trivium. The last few albums have been eh to me.
Anyone mentioned Kylesa yet? Not sure what metal genre they fit in.

That's just loud singing.
I always dug Jame LaBrie's shriek at the end of the 'spoken' part of Octavarium. That is one high goddamned note to hit without a falsetto.

Yes.
There is a huge difference between heavy metal and death metal. However, to somebody that doesn't listen to metal, it all sounds the same, and is widely regarded as 'noise.'
The difference between heavy metal and death metal is largely 1) the vocals, and 2) speed of the music. Most people are put off by the vocals, which I can understand. It's abrasive, and certainly not for everybody. On the other hand, the music behind the vocals is quite often extremely technical, well written, and very difficult to play. That's what death metal has evolved into today. How fast can we play, and how much can we challenge ourselves with odd time changes, yet still make a cohesive song.
For somebody that hasn't listened to much/any death metal, I would recommend some Arch Enemy. Some of the best guitar solos and leads you'll hear in metal. They're pretty heavy, and labeled as 'melodic death metal,' though they're straying from death metal more and more with each album. Still though, awesome guitars.
What kind of stuff are you into now? Just Pantera?
