Good to know AT has such a healthy metal following. I'm a huge metal fan myself, of all the various sub-genres. There is some great recommendations in this thread already so I'll just highlight some of my fav's in no particular order.

Arch Enemy
Sybreed
Opeth
Alestorm
Amon Amarth
Dimmu Borgir
Between The Buried and Me
Mastadon
Dagoba
Lamb of God

IMO the two best metal albums of 2011 so far are:

Born of Osiris:

The Human Abstract:

I really liked Protest the Hero's new one as well, but didn't feel it was as strong as the above (probably b/c I prefer growling/screaming over clean vocals).

Heh, funny you mention Born of Osiris. I just put their new album on here at my desk. I haven't really had a chance to absorb it yet, but I will say I prefer their first album over their latest two.

Yea, Katatonia is great, Mikael Akerfeldt of Opeth performed in several Katatonia albums back in the day....

The both of them are going to be performing together here in Houston in just a couple of months. It'll be just after Opeth's new album releases, so it'll be interesting to be one of the first to hear the new stuff played live.

And just another suggestion. While I don't love Killswitch Engage, I think this song is great. I was in the wall of death at Mayhem Fest a couple of years ago during this song, and it was brutal.

can't believe i missed this thread.

i think all the 'modern' metalheads scared the OP away. personally, i think most all the bands i listen to heavily have been listed already.

unfortunately, i think generic 'metal' in this day and age is pretty well lumped in with the 'Xtreme alt rock' genre ('X' for retard emphasis). nickelback, that able saving band that sounds like nickelback, and then theres that other nickelback band and also nickelback. seriously. i can't even BELIEVE how fucking terrible radio metal is.

but push a little further and you find things like all that remains, killswitch engage, and other 'metalcore' bands. some of their stuff is ALMOST radio friendly, but really fast passages and some combo of screamed/growled vocals keeps it off of FM. personally i think 'metalcore' is almost an insult, kind of like 'nu metal.' someone like all that remains is actually pretty close to most melodic death metal, just not quite so heavy and maybe a little catchier/more repetitive.

that's where i would start. if you try and dig right into opeth, dream theater, or some such, you may end up dismissing it REALLY quickly. i love BOTH of those bands, but i didn't at first. i don't think i ever would have given them a proper listen if it weren't for bands like deftones, spineshank, glassjaw...all kinds of stuff that is 'hard' but more in the posthardcore or numetal genres than anything else. that transitioned to modern 'metalcore' as described above, plus lots of european melodic death metal, and my 'holy trinity' of dream theater, opeth, and porcupine tree (do not know if i have seen them listed yet).

Flipping through my CDs on the way into work today, and came across this little gem tucked away in the back.

At the Throne of Judgment. Probably sitting right on the border of metalcore and melodic death metal. Not a very big band, I don't think, but man, these guys are awesome.

I really like their vocalist's range. At times he sounds like old Danni Filth, and then gets real nasty and guttural lows.

Been in an epic metal symphony style lately.

Edge of Sanity - Crimson/Crimson II
Diabolical Masquerade - Death's Design
Green Carnation - Light of Day, Day of Darkness.

Still heavy metal but we're talkin 40+ minute songs of pure awesome.

Heavy metal here but not so much on death metal. I'm not a big fan of the scream singing thing. One thing that got me back into power/heavy metal is listening to Totalbiscuit's Blue Plz pre-shows... which was really the only good part of that show. He might be annoying to listen to but he has good taste in music.

Avantasia- The Looking glass was a song he played and since then I have gotten back into that music genre scene.

Thanks for that...

I'm pleasantly surprised. They weren't lying when they said the next album was going to be "very different".

They went the Damnation route (clean vocals, more jazzy) but mixed in more of their usual tempo changes and what not.

Sounds good so far but we'll see when the album is released. I didn't care for Watershed very much, and I'm a huge Opeth fan.
