Are you sure you graduated from high school?

Uh, did you? That's the proper analogy..

But in any case, the OP is an idiot.

no it is not

He mixed derivatives of metric units with single units in the english system...

miles relates to meters
pounds relates to grams
quarts relates to liters....

consistency

ummm, technically, kilograms are the basic unit for mass. ;)

meter-kilogram-second

Actually, pounds aren't even the basic units for mass. Pounds are units of force.
Correct me if I'm wrong, but it should be:

pounds--newtons
slugs-- kilograms

you are correct.

it is laughable how stupid some of the people in this thread are. :(

Metric FTW.

yeah but go under a millimeter and it goes all apeshit crazy

no it doesnt...what are you talking about? Its goes in thousands then

exactly, its annoying :p
SI multiples go in thousands except for the more common values (between 10^3 and 10^-3)

Actually since before then I believe. It's just never taken off.

Little OCNewbie is a lot bigger in centimetres than inches too, that's enough to switch right there.

I hate to call members of this community idiots, but I was compelled to call the OP one now.

you idiot..

Metric is SOO MUCH BETTER than english system
Metric makes a lot more sense, and easier to get used to. Everything in metric is base10. IT's just annoying in engineering to use both. I wish everything was in metric. US should change VERY SOON to metric. this whole englishsystem is total BS.

Once you take engineering classes and use Metric, IT'S SO EASY. IT'S SO MUCH EASIER TO WORK WITH METRIC THAN IT IS englishsystem. I HATE engslishsystem. IT's a shame that I had to grow up w/ this lame system.

I think I will add my two cents to this thread too.

Metric system is far superior to the US Customary system. There is no debate on this.

The US is just too stubborn, or lazy, to do whats necessary to completely change over.

1) Stop teaching US Customary in schools, remove it from all text books.
2) Replace it with the metric system.
3) Cease selling of all products using US Customary measurements. No more tape measures with 1/16th of an inch.
4) Wait for all the stubborn old people to . . . filter out of the world.

The US was scheduled to switch to metric with Canada back in the late 60's but bailed out on us at the last second citing cost.

I'm sure by now its costing them far more by constantly being incompatible with the rest of the world.

One thing that really pisses me off is theres a US gallon and an imperial gallon. Why the F did you n00bs have to make a slightly different sized gallon then everyone too.. Damn nubcakes.

I assumed he was talking about pound-mass. But that just adds to the confusion even more.

As dumb as our system is, there's no way that we will see a complete switch in our lifetime, if ever at all.

i don't believe hectares to sq metres is a round number

I'm used to the imperial and prefer it to metric but only because I'm used to it. Metric is way better and makes way more sense. Metric conversions are teh easy!

Humans are funny creatures. Whatever we learn when we are 4 years old is what makes sense. I?m convinced you could make up and teach a child say a base 13 numbering system and it would make as much sense as base 10 does to us. Of course that would be a cruel experiment and mess the kid up bad when he gets into the real world. I?m just saying hypothetically I?m convinced it would be that way.
Try to teach somebody base 8 or 16 and you know what I mean.
Yet we want to cling to the inches/feet /yards/miles or cups/pints/quarts/gallons?

Here is what I want to see.
A metric clock.
10 hours = 24 hours. No am or pm needed.
100 minutes to an hour. 100 seconds to a minute.
One delbert metric second would be slightly less than one (current format) second.

what you just stated is pretty dang obvious. why is it hard for us to learn different languages? because we think in the one we grew up hearing!

Too obvious perhaps. Because it?s what we know it?s what makes sense. Everybody says ?but base 10 is easy?. It?s only easy because it?s what we know. You crack the code in kindergarden and you are off and running counting to 100+. You can count by 10?s, 5?s etc when you figure it out. It could have been any number, but because the old goat herder need something to reference how many goats he had, and had 10 fingers, that?s what we use.

The blind pompous ignorant arrogance is rather mind-boggling. The US is just used to having our little system and it has nothing to do with laziness, idiocy, or stupidity.
The fact that you people do not understand this just exemplifies how stupid you guys are; you can't seem to think critically enough to wrap your arrogant minds around that concept.
Also since you all think you are so damned smart, I would like you geniuses to find a cost-effective way to change the entire American manufacturing processes, economics, and marketing over to the metric system. It's not so easy as you guys think it is.
Allegedly you all have a brain, so try to use it to think of the consequences as opposed to accusing everybody of being stupid.

I work as a chemist, and so for the majority of my week I deal with metric units, primarily things like Celsius, µg, ng, grams, mL, and liters - however another perhaps "odd" standard is that for pressure everything is measured in PSI, which is not a metric unit, and sometimes BTUs which is another very common technical unit which is not metric.
When I am not at work then I just as easily use our American system of measurements. I like buying my milk in gallons, makes things easier.

I think for the most part we do fine with the way things are. Sure eventually I would like to see us totally switch to metric, but that would be a long and rough road I think.

i thought they were measured out at 2x4 but the cuts made up for the 1/8 of an inch difference.

we use base ten because we have 10 fingers.

that's why it makes sense to us, if we each only had 8 fingers we would use base 8. it's arbitrary.

One-point-oh posts in a useless argument about a system of measurement ;)

*Pulls out lawn chair, dons flame suit, and kicks back with drink in hand*

Have at it, SAE vs Metric! You still both lose to hands-widths, arms-lengths, and other guess-timates of measurement in everyday life :)

63,360 inches in a mile

2.548 miles = ? inches

I know 2.548 km = 2548 meter or 254800 cm
