I love the metric system, it's much easier to use. I hate that the US uses the English system.

I think the US should switch to the Metric. It is easier and makes more sense. Correct me if im wrong but isnt there like exactly 100,000 kilometers between the north and south poll? I believe thats how they came up with meter measurements.

Besides its true to say you're now packin 10!!!!

It makes more sense, but not neccesarily more scientific, as some people have said. It is based on faulty calculations of actual distance between the equator and the poles I believe. But definitely an easier system to understand.

No, it's 10,000 km from the equator to the poles.

I wish we would have moved with Canada the way we were supposed to have done back in the late 1970's. The only reason people think metric is difficult is because they are taught it from a conversion perspective. If we actually made the switch the only learning curve would be getting the feel for what common units we use daily are in metric. If the English, who originated the system we use, could move to it it is ridiculous that we have not.

About C$0.90 a litre here in Toronto. Assuming an exchange rate of 1.15 (feeling generous), it's about US$2.97 per gallon. I am using your 3.8, instead of 1 US gallon = 3.7854118 litres.

And, whether the basis is grams or kilograms depends on whether you're using CGS or MKS
centimeter-gram-seconds
or
meter-kilogram-seconds.

Furthermore, what's the weight of 1 cubic mile of water? (do it without googling... I doubt you can, oh mighty master of the American system)
But, any high school kid in physics could quickly calculate the weight of 1 cubic kilometer of water.

And the answer to both questions is:

Who gives a fvck.

NASA should have. I still don't understand how a place like NASA even tolerates Imperial (or Americanized Imperial). They lost a long range probe because some ass was using Imperial while others were on Metric...

We already established our stupid system so I say keep it, but metric is better than imperial.

I have no problem with the Metric system - it has its place in the sciences. What I deplore is government trying to force its use by edict. Screw that with a left twist! The English system is people-based, not some abstract concept. No problem at all for me to use both as appropriate, as I've done most of my life.

Quarts > Liters is also factually incorrect. Now 40 Ouncers ARE greater than Liters... ;)

I don't think many people will argue with metric being easier to use and making more sense, but the fact is, it's impossible to convert a nation where more than half of the population never learned metric, and where imperial is still used by the masses. So, the US will never change.

i think if i used it more i would like it...it seems logical, easy to convert to larger or smaller units...seems like it would make sense

Well... I haven't read this whole thread and am not going to. But anyone who says the english system rocks has never had to do engineering or scientific calculations using it. It SUCKS! The metric system is so much better. Everything is based on units of 10. Even the units themselves mesh together so easily and make figuring out the equations so much easier.
Ex.
Acceleration = m/s^2. You need to know the amount of force used to get a certain acceleration. Newtons = (kg*m)/s^2. Just multiply the acceleration by the weight (kg) and you've got it!

"yeah, you go straight ahead and then make a left, and walk 400 meters"

methinks: hmm how much is 400 meters?

That has to do a lot with city planning. In Argentina (well, at least in Buenos Aires), all normal street blocks are 100m long. Of course you got the diagonals and big boulevards that don't have a crossing for a few 100ms, but over all, 100m is a block. One way street is also the norm, but they are designed so you can drive around the block. Thus 400m is 4 blocks.

whole world? Err, check the number of imperial users compared to metric users... You'll see imperial (or the US Mixed) is the minirity by a few factors.

We Europeans just changed from our old currency to euro. Granted not as major but still its a pretty big deal. If you want to change this is what I propose.
-Start with the kids. As much as possible in metric. Obviously also teach English so they can survive :p
-Add metric after every English value. Ex. 1 inch/2,54cm nails.
-After a while change the order. Metric first.
-Eventually cut the English off. Old people will bitch, tough break old fart.

Thats pretty much what we did with the euro.

The process would take perhaps 3 years, plenty of time. If you want the fall to be softer you could use a longer period.
