Dexter (Final) Season 8

Not sure why this has to be a Dexter vs Break Bad thing anyways. I love having a handful of shows to watch each week and enjoy them on their own merit. I'm glad that Dexter has given 8 years.

I know throwing BB into the mix may seem random, but it's on my mind because they are both dark serialized dramas in their last seasons, and literally run in the same time slot. BB has been, as predicted, amazing, which just reinforces how limp Dexter has been. If the show had ended after Season 5 I would look on it much more fondly, because it's been so stagnant and uninspired since then. The parallel I keep returning to is Entourage, which I really enjoyed for a few seasons. By the end I not only disliked the final few seasons but thought the show as a whole was mediocre. Dexter is leaving me feeling the same way.

Just watched this week's episode last night. What I keep being struck by is how boring this season is. We are 4 episodes from the end of the series, and still wading around in clunky subplots like Mazuka's daughter and Quinn's relationship with Angel's sister. Is this really the best they can do for an ending? It is hard sledding even getting through these episodes.

They'll have to do something amazing in the next few episodes or I'll have to agree that it started out amazing but ended up merely better than average in the beginning to mediocre by the last seasons.

I am watching last night's episode and good lord am I bored. This show absolutely blows at this point - it is more flaccid and dull than ever, in its last handful of episodes. The idea that this show is literally running side by side with Breaking Bad (which is ending stronger than any serialized drama, ever, by far, with every episode a nail-biter) feels like a cruel joke.

First world problems...

I seriously come into these threads just to laugh at the people bitching.

Anyhow, I think the season has played out the same pace as other seasons. For people complaining, did anyone watch Entourage? The last season happened so fast it seemed forced. Granted there were only like 6 episodes or something but still. What do you people expect?

Just caught up. I was finally starting to get into this whole protege thing, then they kill the kid and go pretty much exactly where I expected. Kind of boring. Anyway, hopefully the last few episodes will be good.

They better not kill Hannah (I  her).

I'll be thoroughly pissed if she doesn't make it. Would suck to watch 8 years of Dexter just to see him be killed or not able to achieve his one shot at happiness.

At this point I would be shocked (pleasantly shocked) if they did not give us the full happy ending. The way they seem to be giving the main characters what they want. Matsuka finding someone who cares about him. Deb and Quinn potentially getting back together. Harrison wanting Hannah to be his Mom which only makes Dexter want her even more. It all feels like it is leading to the big red bow at the end. I hope I'm wrong.

Don't jinx it into another ME3 please :colbert:

I've read some criticism of the show (esp AVClub) pointing out that the show's fatal flaw is the creators' love for Dexter and their unwillingness to challenge or even seriously criticize him. To me that is the defining attribute of this dreadful season - it's just one big love-fest toward Dexter, and he is not under any apparent danger. I am really kind of shocked by just how mundane and dull the show is this year. I would have thought that in the absence of good writing (something the show has lacked for years), they would have at least built up some cheap drama by killing or threatening to kill the main characters, but no such luck. It suggests to me the production staff is clinging to the idea of yet more seasons of this gobbledygook and/or they are too attached to the characters to kill them. In any case they've created a final season that is as interesting as wallpaper paste.

I'm feeling the opposite, that something bad will happen. But I've been wrong before, I'll sense a twist coming and nothing happens. Everything gets resolved way too easily, but Dexter seems to have met his match here (in boring fashion)

I was happy with the first handful of episodes, but after that I agree with you. I really do want someone important to get killed off at this point, just to make things a bit more interesting.

I hope you are right. To me it all feels like it is walking down a very boring road with an inevitable resolution. Dexter did seem to be acting dumb though. When he was standing right in plain view at the diner waiting for Oliver? What was he thinking? Seemed obvious he would be seen/caught.

I'm going for:
- Oliver kidnaps and kills Hannah (and maybe Deb/Jamie too).
- Harrison is there.
- We get the nice "loop" of Dexter sitting in his mother's blood as a child and Harrison sitting in Hannah's blood, whom he has called his mommy.
- Dexter goes nuts and kills Oliver, potentially in a public way, and gets caught.
- Harrison goes to live with his grandparents and we skip forward in time to see him following the same track as Dexter.

That would be fine with me. Wish they'd get around to it! 😛

In that scenario, does Dexter escape being ID'd as a serial killer and only gets caught for the revenge killing, which no one faults him for? I can't tell if that would be a cop out or not. Eh, I'll just be happy when it's all over, regardless. The last couple episodes have been watchable at least
