Hey, what's up? This is a CSR from Staples... I do real-time chat and phone support. A company named Paragon does our rebates... on Saturday they contacted corporate Staples and said they are going to reject any Visioneer 8100 rebates if coupons were used on the order. I am not sure how much weight this statement carries... I know for a fact we have sold at least 10,000 scanners since Feb. 1st. ($70 rebate and then this $80 rebate) and I fear the day our call center has to deal with 10k angry customer who get rejected rebates. But personally I think your rebates will be fine. Matter of fact, I ordered one for myself (against company policy) back on Feb. 2.

As far as we are concerned... the CSRs... as I mentioned above, we have been informed by corporate Staples, who was informed by Paragon, the rebate people, to inform customers that their rebates WILL be rejected if a coupon was used on the order. We are informed to place any 8100 orders on hold that we receive through e-mail and inform the customers of the situation. It's quite a pain in the ass to put all these orders on hold. But, ah well, I do not work for Paragon, just Staples. I don't know if your rebates will go through but all the CSRs have been informed to stop these orders with coupons. If you get me, I'll do it for my fellow Anandtecher's though 😉

I am thinking that maybe they won't allow any more deals to go through, but the people who have already purchased will get their rebates? /hoping

that is interesting. But I guess they have to approve rebates from order already made.

uh...dude if you really are a Staples CSR you had better edit your post(s) or obfuscate your AT profile as any corp peep can clearly id you. Nice sig you have.

This is almost brag and moanish, apologies if it better belongs there. I jumped on the bandwagon on the evening of the 14th, ordering one with coupon, plus a couple small items. I checked status last night, and found the scanner out of stock (even though it wasn't out of stock on Thursday and Friday), without a predicted in stock date. (This isn't the first time Staples.com has "out of stocked" their way out of a hot deal; the most recent was on a NEC 19" monitor about four months ago). I called and canceled the order this afternoon, as I really don't want a $100 scanner which won't show as purchased until after the rebate period is over.

For those of you who have ordered, but not yet received your scanner, you might want to check status at Staples.com to verify you're still in the pipeline.

The plus is that I snagged the last one in a brick and mortar store nearby. Since the scanner is for my dad, I'll cough up the $20, and consider it a Father's Day present in advance. It would svck for the rebate to be canceled on couponed orders ... a couple guys in my office jumped on this deal with coupons, too.

Will someone please post the UPC number for the scanner, I want to fill out the online rebate form, it wants it and my scanner won't be delivered til 2/21. Thanks to whomever posts the number.

If my order goes through and my $80 MIR is rejected, I am going to be pissed. OTOH.. If someone does put my order on hold because I used a coupon and want the rebate, I will understand and simply cancel my entire order then.

Letting me know up front is great, but letting me get the product, cut the UPC from the box, send in the rebate and have it rejected is just unacceptable to me.

mrwade: The UPC on my B&M purchase was 785414103652. This is the "Visioneer 8100 for Windows XP". I suspect the pre-XP one is different.

Good luck!

<< i believe upc is different for every box.
Just wait til they deliver.
>>

That's incorrect. UPC is the same for every box, serial number is different. Here is the UPC - 785414103652.

I just ordered another scanner and had no problems checking out with a coupon. We'll see if he order gets rejected. The other ones have shipped (used coupons as well).

i've already started to slice (half-way) the upc sticker using a knife when i read the rebate getting rejected... can i stil return it?

I, like many others, have submitted many rebates to Staples for items purchased with coupons, and have never had a problem. However, the guy above who claims to be a Staples CSR says the rebate company is promising to reject such submissions this time. This one just sounds too risky to me. With AmEx pricematches apparently not working either, this deal just seems jinxed. Staples is going to have to eat the shipping charge and take back my scanner. The deal is not good enough, and I don't need another scanner enough, to justify risking $80 for a mediocre scanner. For those who are less paranoid than me, good luck -- I hope you get the deal.

Question to StaplesChatRep:
Why is Staples' rebate processing company deciding to approve/reject rebate requests? Shouldn't Staples be the one?

Well here's my story with my in-store purchase today:

I walked up to the register with the scanner, a double-pack of ink cartridges and two email coupon pages -- one with total $ off coupons and one with some coupons for paper and ink cartridges. The operations manager for the store was passing by and told me I could only use one coupon per transaction so we decided to put both items on one check and use the $30 off coupon. While the register clerk was putting the ink cartridges in a bag, the operations manager went to get the scanner rebate form -- which I had never even mentioned. I did not discuss the confusion about this promotion with the operations manager because her actions made it clear that she did not believe there was any restriction whatsover regarding the coupon/rebate combination.

I'm one of the paranoid people.... but my problem is that I've got the scanner sitting here in the box.... and I used the coupon... debating whether or not to send in the rebate or just send the scanner back to staples.... like mentioned earlier... I don't want to pay $80 for a mediocre scanner.

that's it! StaplesChatRep really scared me.
i'm going to return it now.

it's better not to sleep w/ a not-so-hotdeal $20 scanner
than not sleeping w/ a rejected $80 rebate.

For those paranoid about the rebate being rejected if you used a coupon, the B&M rebate form states that you can send a copy of the Visioneer 8100 UPC so that if it get rejected, you can still return the scanner to Staples and get your money back. Staples is generally fast with the approval or denial of their rebates so you should know the answer in a couple of weeks.

"Question to StaplesChatRep:

The Staples rebate center in conjunction with Paragon processes the rebates. Corporate Staples and Paragon... the best way to put it... sleep together. Staples is not stupid... this is a Staples rebate. They know they sell the scanner fior $99 bucks and they are throwing out $70 and $80 rebates. This is a not a mistake, just a marketing move. Most people, not all people, are simply buying the scanner for $99 and then getting their rebate... so staples is still selling the thing for $20-30. Staples has thousands and thousands in stock and I imagine that they purchased these from Visioneer almost totally free. So, with so much stock, why not sell them all for 20 or 30 bucks a pop and still make a lot of profit? The scanner is by-no-means top of the line, but who is going to pass up a brand new, brand name scanner that costs under $30 in box, with a return policy, etc? No one! Trust me, Staples is still making profit @ $10 a scanner.

However, Staples does not make profit when people work out insane price matches where customer end up with $6, $10, $20 extra in their pockets. That's why they might be squeezing the coupon deals and rejecting them.

Another thing: CSR's are like rolling a die. Our call center has about 150-250 reps who are trained to take price matches. Some of them are very tight, corporate-conforming reps who will adhere to the policies until death. Some will be nice to you if you are nice to them. Some don't give a damn and place any order/price match that comes in. Seriously, if any of you have worked in call centers, you know what it is like. Who wants to help a guy who calls in and starts flaming "Give me my pricematch dammit, SHOW me in your policy where I can't do this, blah blah" ... we will make stuff up so you don't get the price match. And our supervisors and trained to not give in to the customer, but rather trust the rep (good business practice, lol). A better approach would be "Oh, hi there, how is the weather there? Oh hey, I found a really good price on one of your items somewhere else, etc." Most of us are college kids anyway.

sounds like the guy works in marketing or purchasing, i'm amazed they tell their phone reps their margins on scanners they sell.... </sarcasm>

You had better get your answer within 14 days, though, as Staples' return policy for scanners is 14 days. Some of us could use AmEx Blue to return the scanner within 90 days. It seems like it might be a hassle to return it to AmEx, though.

Does anyone know if you have to pay to ship the scanner to AmEx if you want to return it under the AmEx Blue Return Protection program?
