So... I'm still not very far in Dark Souls. I just defeated the gargoyles at the top of Undead Parrish, and now I've headed into the "Lower" Undead Berg.
Is it bad that I'm occasionally consulting a walkthrough for this game? I try to avoid walkthroughs when I can, but it's extremely difficult to know where to go next, and it's very easy to miss hidden stuff.
When I passed through Undead Parrish, I went immediately into Darkroot Garden and got destroyed. After looking at a walkthrough, I realized there was a whole other portion of Undead Burg that I apparently missed... and probably should've gone through first. It would've taken me a long time to guess that the random "basement key" unlocked a small door all the way on the other side of the map, which led to a whole new area.
This game seriously doesn't hold your hand. This is both a good thing and a bad thing. Good, because it requires exploration and figuring things out for yourself, but it's also bad because there are basic game mechanics that aren't explained properly at all. I've had to use Google in many such cases. There's just lots of little things that are so vague and unexplained that it makes me hesitant.
I also didn't realize after a while that the currency you use for buying things (Souls) are also used for leveling up. I feel like I've wasted too many Souls on repairing weapons and buying shit, rather than leveling up. Isn't it more "worth it" to save those souls for leveling up? I look at it this way: leveling up is permanent. Repairing your sword is not. Is this the right kind of attitude to have? Is it possible to screw yourself over early on in the game if you do this, or is there something else I'm missing?
For the record, I'm a level 24 warrior right now. I have some nice reinforced armor and a Drake sword, which the dragon drops on the bridge entrance to Undead Parrish.
