The thing is, it strikes me the only fix for the constant flame battles would be to ban or suspend the accounts of chronic offenders (Passions, say, or Edge3D, and no doubt others who don't readily come to mind), and I don't think that's a satisfactory solution either.

I don't have a problem with anyone speaking his mind, even if I wholly disagree, but some posters contribute nothing but friction. That said, I am very wary of restricting speech, and I wouldn't want to see people banned just because they have poor self-discipline as to the quality of their posts. I suppose the mods might be able to lock them out of this particular forum if they persist in posting nothing but flamebaiting.

Well, again -it'd have to be specifically defined as to what is allowed and what isn't. They don't seem ready to start down that road yet.

That is a good idea.....what CAD says is correct though. It would need to be something the Mods would need to control and put the offensive/flame bait posts in. It's something that should probably be a sticky as well. Anyone want to propose this to the Mods?

Maybe we should have a poll with the specific rules that we want the moderators to enforce? Then they can enforce the winner (which will hopefully be specific). Maybe that will get the leviathans' attention. Any want to suggest some nominees?
 
On some level I think it's great that we are even having this discussion, and that we can, regardless of political affiliation, agree on the proposition that this place needs more reasoned discussion and less flaming. That represents something very positive IMO.

This was what I proposed to them:

Basically, several of us, on both sides of the political spectrum, are thoroughly sick of the mean-spirited flamewars that have been consuming P&N. Our proposal is that the mods would create a stickied thread, in which only mods could post, that would document the nastiest insulting posts (accompanied by mod comments, if you feel that's appropriate). We had talked about rotating them out once a week, but obviously that would be up to you mods.

If you don't want to monitor all the posts yourselves for candidates, we could obviously notify you when someone is way out of bounds.

The idea is basically to create an asshole list, to single out users who are just cluttering P&N with pointless trolling. I think we all value the ATPN community, and are hoping to make it a more civilized community for debate and discussion.

If it weren't for the whole Korea discussion thing that took over this thread for a while I would say it should be stickied for a bit. That way people could at least see that it is something we all consider to be important and hopefully that will help.

I will be out most of the day tomorrow.....wedding out of town. But hopefully this will keep rolling on and we can get some civility back in here.

I must say I'm impressed by the overall attitude of those in this thread. It went off into La La land for a bit but on the whole it has been a nice first step back from the brink.

Ahhhh....grass roots movements....aren't they great??

I wouldn't want to make a thread until we had nominations for a good poll. It's hard to think of a specific definition of flame, but prohibiting comments like, "you are [insert insult]" might be good. But then how do we treat, "liberals are all selfish communists"? I wouldn't want those commends banned unless the liberal referenced was someone specific. I also wouldn't want to see comments like, "GWB is a moron" or "John Kerry is Hanoi John" banned either. I only have a problem with the personal inter-poster insults.
