Common Core assignment - was the Holocaust a hoax?

So they just threw the 'common core' label on it to further smear it? AFAIK, the common core doesn't set curriculum. It only provides guidelines and the local districts or states set the curriculum based on the guidelines. It's a good assignment for teaching critical thinking and how to evaluate sources, however, the subject might have been touchy for some people and people that have an agenda and want to blow it all out of context.
I can see why it was chosen though: take something that most of the students know is true to make the false source more obvious. But, the person who created the assignment could have used more tact and found another subject. Maybe they used the Holocaust because it tied in with other material they were learning about at the time.

On the other hand, women deserve equal rights. I can not support a nation that does not protect women and treat them as equals.

No they don't. Historians write the history books. In very few countries do those historians have any particular incentive to pander to what 'the victors' want to hear, and in fact quite the opposite, historians advance in their careers by going against conventional wisdom (assuming they have convincing evidence).
Absolutely not, which has nothing to do with questioning the Holocaust. You should question science, too, but that doesn't mean we need to have students spend time questioning gravity or a round Earth.

It's one thing to dive into why Japan attacked Pearl Harbor, in fact I remember going over that very topic in my history classes.
It's an entirely other level of crazy to open up the discussion of what facts support or not support whether Japan attacked Pearl Harbor or not... maybe it was U.S. planes painted to look like Japanese who bombed Pearl Harbor in F.D.R.'s plot to force the U.S. into war!
Big difference.
Let's also teach through a high school debate on if the Boston marathon bombing was in fact just actors playing out a practice crisis scenario.

I mentioned nothing about the holocaust, and actually wanted to avoid comparing it to the holocaust (as I mentioned in my first sentence).
The point I'm trying to make here is that someone from Japan was tried for a war crime and hanged. All over what appeared to be the result of American action during the battle. So someone took a hanging over something they had no control over. That nobody throughout history seemed to ever question it. It was written into a history program as truth and from what I could tell, even pointed out that this admiral who took a hanging was portrayed as a brutal war criminal. Which may or may not be true, but it seemed Americans took at least a small part if not a large part in what happened and what they accused the Admiral of doing.
In war, I don't ever take anything at face value, and I question everything. As I believe everybody should.
In no way did I say the holocaust was caused entirely by Americans, or didn't happen at all. I wanted to avoid any direct comparison. I just wanted to point out that I believe it's ok that people look into the facts/history and do any independent research as they see fit and come to their own conclusion, and never really believe 100% what they are told by the media about anything (war related or not.)

A VERY useful question for HS kids to research, to really exercise their critical thinking skills, would be "Is there a difference between a zygote and a person?" I think that - free from appeals to emotion, false comparisons, circular reasoning, and ideology - students could really learn something in doing this research for themselves.
