Element, I'm curious, what is "Real Music" in your opinion (cause that's all it is, an opinion not fact).

Feeling sorry for us? I'm feeling sorry for you for being so close-minded since you don't want to open up to new things.

sacotool, any time

element, just like was asked, what do YOU consider real music? and how do you know what i listen to? if you paid attention to many of the other threads, you would have learned that i am fairly knowledgeable in all genre's of music, more so in hiphop.

p.s. ignorant is used as an adjective. not a noun, therefore i did not CALL you a name, i described how you were acting.

p.p.s. i HAVE compiled MANY formidable arguments, i have seen not a single one from you on this topic. so as i said, start making them outlines and rough drafts :p

Rap sucks.

But, hey, I do like LL Cool J. I've never listened to his "poems", though.

Russ, NCNE

I had on MTV this morning and had the (dis?)pleasure of viewing the new Mystikal(sp?) video. It's offical, any idiot can make millions by having a video with chicks with big breasteses.

Easier than starting a dot-com was last year.

Don't make this a young vs. old, white vs. black thing. I am old and white and I listen to Rap I like, I havent liked mainstream Rap since the early 90's because it is boring old hat junk. There are however good artist's who are not mainstream and have a good or bad political statement about politics or life, those are more intresting and real than Dre taking about "gatting down a motherfvcker" when he lives in a big house in a very white upscale suburban area 15 minutes from my house. The self destructive "gangster" rap stuff is against any and all concepts of bettering the black communities situation, if you are all down with helping the brothers out then stop buying the crap that holds them down. Find and listen to Paris, and see what he says about gangster rap and drugs and the fast life. Even spike lee has spoke out against gangster rap as beeing the wrong picture to put on the face of black america. Chuck D of public enemy has spoken out about the same issue, Boogie Down Productions have always been about taking the bad and trying to correct that perception. Gangster Rap has put this idea in the heads of white america the blacks and getto's and violence are synonymous, and with the violent shootings of two (plus the others) of the more popular rap artists why wouldn't they? I think you all need to check your self and what it is that you are supporting.

you are right about boogie down productions shux

russ, i never said ALL rappers are poets. i named those who i felt are poets. and i consider taht HIPHOP, rap is mainstream junk. hiphop is more than music, it is a state of mind, and a way of life.

dwell, unfortunately, like i said, in the mainstream, money, and sex is what sells. in the MAINSTREAM. not on the conciouse level of hiphop however. listen to mosdef, ill be surprised if he mentions how much money he has. no, ill be SHOCKED

"Element, I'm curious, what is "Real Music" in your opinion (cause that's all it is, an opinion not fact)."

I already answered this when I said music has rhythm and melody. Real music hence, is sound with rhythm and melody.

"Feeling sorry for us? I'm feeling sorry for you for being so close-minded since you don't want to open up to new things."

I am not close-minded. I am open minded about everything. But that doesn't mean I have to like everything, or agree with everything. I give everything a chance. Some things I agree with and some I don't. Don't confuse opinionated with close-mindedness.

Gangsta rap is the worst garbage on Earth. There is nothing entertaining about guns and violence. ?Keeping it real? is the biggest bullsh*t copout I have ever heard. No one is ?keeping it real? when they are targeting gangsta record sales at the middle to upper class white community. These little suburban gangstas think they are so hardcore from listening to gangsta in there $25k cars. I bet if any one of them had a gun pulled on them ?for real? they would wet their pants and pass out.

It?s a shame that so many people and families are hurt because this lousy excuse for music warped their minds. The young are very impressionable. It?s the inner city kids who have access to guns and are exposed to violence on a daily basis that are truly hurt by these ?devils? of the recording industry.

I have been waiting for this stupid fad to end since the first NWA record came out. It has only gotten worse since.

Shux, Thanks. I never liked NWA myself.

I think we come from the same old school time period.

there's no such thing as gangsta rap anymore - get over it

And element, if you can't hear that Hip Hop has a rhythm/melody then you must be deaf, because every beat I kno has a rhythm

The term may be dead but it?s filthy remnants live on in 75% of what is considered hip-hop today.

WHAT THE HELL, are you people not reading what im saying?

1. GANGSTA RAP IS DEAD, it was just a big rucuss caused by the media, to make hiphop look bad
2. NOT ALL RAP IS HIPHOP!
3. READ THE REST OF MY POSTS INSTEAD OF IGNORING THEM. THEY ANSWER MOST OF YOUR STATEMENTS!!!

DAMN!!!:|:|:|

KV, calm the hell down and stop grandstanding. I would wager that I have been listening to hip-hop longer than you have been walking. Read the supplementary posts about "gansta rap" before grandstanding next time.

Huh?
I think you're talking to element, because I haven't said anything in this thread.

But, since you asked, I honestly don't get worked up over all that much music. I like listening to it on occasion, but I don't think I've bought a CD since I was 17. I don't think _any_ kind of music is _real_ music, necessarily. I don't really hold one kind of music high on a pedestal over any other kind. Some music is beautiful, some music is ugly, some is serious, some is fun. I have my preferences on what I listen to most (all sorts, but lately classic rock and 80's crap... I've been on a Styx kick lately, and I can't figure out why :p ), but generally I'm pretty neutral on music.

That said, there are certain things that I don't like about the _people_ and the _attitudes_ that go with some types of music, and I'll leave it at that. I'm kinda tired of this topic, because, well, I don't think you'll ever see my point. And that's okay, because maybe I'm not seeing yours because I just don't care all that much about the music I listen to, and think that some people care a little too much about the music they listen to, because after all it's just a form of entertainment.

I say have fun with it. :) Listen to some Weird Al, or Primus, or really cheesy 80's crap like Styx. It's fun! :p

dwell - take it from the people who know, gangsta rap is dead - end of story. There's no arguing it so don't try, please. And KV isn't grandstanding, it's just the fact is that people keep pulling this term out of their asses just to try to make a valid argument - when gangsta rap doesn't even exist anymore! So see it from our point of view a little...

dwell, if you really listened to hiphop "before i could walk", then you would know that gangsta rap is dead. the questions still stands, can you tell me any songs that you recently heard that qualifies as gangsta rap? so far, no one has said anything.

and i will NOT calm down. it seems like i go through this in every hiphop post. i DID read what yous said, about 75% being descendant of gangsta rap. i still disagree with that

Heh... so true.
I'm almost embarrassed to admit this, but a lot of Stephen King's stuff just sets me _on fire_. I know a lot of people who just hate his stuff (and just as many who think it's great), but for some reason anything that ties in or is involved with his Dark Tower series (which means a good portion of the stuff he's written over the last seven years or so) moves me in a way that's hard to describe.

I guess I feel like there's something else there, some theme that goes underneath and ties so many of his books together and is all centered around this Dark Tower of his. Either that, or it's just a really good hook to suck some of us deeper into his writing. Either way, I like it! :p

That's such bullshi[/b]t, even if those kids were listening to Disco they'd be in the same situation. Think of what you said: Inner City kids. And How in the hell are you gonna blame that stuff on inner city kids when it's the goddamn rednecks that are shooting schools up :|

Your logic astounds me....

Hey Engine-
Stephen King is an evil man! That's all he writes about is murder and other morbid themes. He's gotta be a psycho or something because no one with their sanity could write such stories! Truly a disturbed person...

(ok, that was all a mockery, that's just the attitude people take with rap [and I have nothing against Stephen King, just making a point])
