I have to say a lot of what's been written here made me laugh....especially since people believe routine enemas are good for you.

First, an enema only "cleanses" the large intestine....cannot reach the small intestine due to the length, curvature (it has three distinct runs or sections....the ascending colon, or right side moving up from the small intestine towards your liver, then the hepatic flexure where it bends, then the transverse colon that runs across laterally, the splenic flexure, then the descending colon to the sigmoid and then out.)

A purging agent, on the other hand, can empty the small intestine as well as the large. But, in either case, you lose huge amounts of electrolytes and water. The small and esp. the large intestine are responsible for absorption of 'lytes and water. So, in actuallity, a good purging can leave you with horrible electrolyte deficiencies temporarily and somewhat dehydrated.

As far as impacted food in your gut.......the intestinal wall is coated in mucus, a lot like the inside of your mouth. How much food is stuck to the inside of your mouth? Guess none, hmmm? Same concept applies......the intestinal tract is slippery......lots of mucus and the villi, the little finger-like protusions in the wall of the intestine responsible for absorption and motility, keep food impaction from happening.

If you truly had 6 pounds of meat always in your gut, as some natural health nuts claim, you'd have a blockage of your gut and surgery would surely follow. Nothing would pass by......no food and very little gas. You'd be in pain......from swelling, bloating, and the putrification going on inside.

And as far as daily BM's.....old wife's tale. Not necessary for every single person to move their bowels every single day. Yet, we Americans seem fascinated and obcessed with having daily BM's....so much, in fact, that laxatives are huge sellers because of the mistaken belief that you have to crap every day. Not to mention that routine enemas will cause you to eventually lose the muscle tone in your gut, making you become eventually dependent upon either chemical stimulants or hydraulics for complete evacuation of your large intestine. The muscles become lazy when you "assist" them with the enemas....why should they work when you're doing it for the intestinal muscles?


Your body sets its own natural rhythm...exercise, drink more water and eat more roughage if you want more BM's.

IIRC, medically speaking, anywhere from thrice a day to once a week is "normal".

But I'm no doctor.

My grandma was obsessed with being "regular" when my mom was growing up...enemas and all the rest. Thankfully, my mom realized how...weird that was, and I didn't have to go through any of it.
 
My brother (med school student..i know they have no credibility as of yet, but he's one bright little dude, and has a lot more credibility on the matter than I do) told me this is a waste of money, and that it can be more harmful than helpful. Just eating plenty of fiber will do the same job, and it's a lot more healthier that way too.

The thing the OP is talking about i believe is those health drinks you buy, and you ONLY drink those - and it gives you massive...exit of stuffs... for like 3 days... ive talked to some who says its awesome. Elliot in the morning was asking people about it (DC101 talk show host in NoVA) and lots of people said it was great...

Its supposed to get rid of all the bad stuff in ya..

Apparently to be 'regular' you're supposed to have a BM at least once, if not twice a day. Personally, i dont know if i WANT to be spending my time doing that 3 times a day...


I can't believe I just read the whole thread 🙂. Anyways, the Elliott in the Morning People drank some tea they called "the beast." I think they got it from a Chinese store that sold herbal teas and the like.
 
I asked my GP and he reckoned it was a total load of crap.

Eat some fibre and grow some common sense FTW!

If your insides were 'clogged-up' with mysterious 'evil gunk brought on by modern lifestyles' you wouldn't be able to absorb your food properly, or water, you'd be in an incredible amount of pain, and you'd be dead.

What are the characteristics of a healthy, well functioning colon?

Healthy babies, animals and adults not subjected to the "refinements" of civilization (i.e. aboriginal peoples) have bowel movements shortly after each meal is eaten. So, assuming there is sufficient fibre and water available to the colon, one characteristic is a bowel movement shortly after a meal is eaten. Once the urge to eliminate is honoured by a trip to the toilet, the elimination should be easy and take no more than a few seconds. The stool will be long, large in diameter, light brown in colour, without offensive odour and should float or sink very slowly. When the toilet is flushed, the stool immediately begins breaking apart by the action of water movement. As incredible as this may sound, it is true and commonly experienced in cultures where people live more naturally.

Now that would make for some good dinner theatre.
