Co-worker never tips and refuses to

I start at 10%. If the service was what i consider poor, it goes down from there, and can be 0 if bad enough. If the service was neither good nor bad, it's 10-15% and if the service was exceptional it goes up over 20 and higher.

God damn, just pay the 15-20% tip and get over yourself. It's just money, it's common practice in America, and saving yourself the $5-15 by neglecting your server a tip isn't going to do anything but make you look like a cheap asshole (which, chances are, you are).

It's a con. The restaurant gets to pay the waiter/waitress below minimum wage with the assumption that the consumer will automatically tip.

If they paid them more then they would have to raise the prices of the food to compensate...

So you would be paying it anyways, without any incentive for them to do a good job. I have tipped anywhere from 5-30%

Without the tips the restaurant would have to adjust that pay.

This is mostly an america battle and the reason our food prices are much less than other places (you can't count currency adjustments as a traveler).

The food prices are not lower. Add in the tip WHICH YOU HAVE TO PAY ANYWAY, now where did that low price go?

Food costs are higher in other countries and they are willing to pay.

Most here and in general feel the service they get they are entitled too and unless it was OUTSTANDING then no tip is justified. Likewise they have this idea that all servers are making excellent money.

Servers can indeed make $15-20+/hr during PEAK hours and usually on dinner service. However they usually don't pull that over a 40 hour week + lack the benefits.

Someone on full benefits making $15-20/hr is probably truly making closer to double that once health care and other benefits are factored in.

If the restaurant clearly listed that the prices shown are what you pay, no tip needed. No problem with that right?
I'd day the customer is pretty damn stupid if he would choose Restaurant Y next door where he has to tip and pay the SAME price as Restaurant X who's food prices are 'higher'.

Why pay $7 for a $6 hamburger people would argue...

... and yet they are already paying$7 for a $6 burger due to tips.

Don't restaurants automatically include 20% tip in the food when there is a party of 6 or more? I remember a couple times the waiter/waitress would completely ignore us since they knew it was automatically being charged. Usually this isn't noticeable but when I want a refill on a drink and have to flag down 2 other waiters just because our waiter had more than enough tables to handle, it gets noticed but there's nothing I can do since the tip is already included...

What I don't like are bills which still include the TIP line to fill when obviously you were already charged 20% but that's another story...

Anyone who chooses to "automatically" tip 15% regardless of the quality of service they receive deserves the crappy service they get, however people who never leave a tip are worse. Its one thing to not like the system used to pay serving staff in most restaurants in the USA, but not understanding that they are payed less then minimum-wage in the assumption that tips will make up the difference just makes the none-tipper an asshole ... not tipping/leaving a small tip in exchange for poor service is a different story.

One thing I will add is that no matter how lousy service I receive I never leave a tip of zero because then it might seem that I simply forgot ... I much prefer to leave a VERY small tip (roughly 1%) which does a much better job of making the point.

You don't have to tip that gratuity %; especially if they do not alert you about it before hand (whether it's on the menu or verbally).

If it's a service charge that you are made aware of, then you're paying it. Here's something that happened here:

I hate this the most. You pay this extra 'tax' and get nothing for it.

I've learned to never split checks with coworkers. I had one who not only wouldn't tip but would never include the tax in their portion of the payment.

Another thing I have a couple questions about are these two scenarios with tipping which really boggles me,

Do you tip when it's a fast food restaurant (Jack in the Box, Carl's Jr.) when the worker brings the food to the table? How about Starbucks/Peets/Jamba Juice?

Do you tip when you go to a small chain fast food restaurant (Sandwich place) where there's a line for tip on the receipt but all they do is prepare your food?

In California servers get payed $8/hour from their restaurants

The food price is the same as states where they pay their servers $2.13 a hour

Don't believe me? Check out some of the national chains and compare their prices in states where they pay their servers $8/hour and states where they pay their servers $2.13/hour

With large chains, the price would go up minimally. With the smaller restaurants, it'd be a completely different ballgame.

It's called a profit margin, owners are not going to slim that simply because some people are too cheap to tip

What's your point? A national restaurant has a large number of restaurants that across the nation would have adjusted prices. This would offset the reduced profits in those areas by having increased profits in other areas. The overall profit remains the same or improved without alienating customers in the areas with increased operating costs.

This is a simple example, but it'll help illustrate my point. Say NY went to minimum wage + tips. Fine, raise prices across the nation by $0.50 per dish and not $4 per dish in just NY. Decreased profits in NY, but massively increased profits overall. And then because it only costs $12.50 for that plate of pasta instead of $16, you don't lose customers.

Mom and pop shops would have no other choice than to either operate at razor thin profit margins with decent increases in prices, or jack up prices tremendously to maintain current profit levels.

Once again, why would anyone voluntarily decrease their profit margins? They are going to have to raise their prices.

Think about it, everyone working there would make the same amount of money regardless of how good or crappy they were. It's the equivalent of a sales associate working for a salary or on commission....which one is going to go above and beyond.

I, personally, enjoy getting great service and tip accordingly. If incentive is removed, there goes my great service...

Yeah they should just post a HUGE ASS sign out in front NO TIPPING NEEDED!

Your thoughts work great in concept, but in reality they will have people not knowing it's tip-free, others thinking the restaurant is screwing their staff, and other's still tipping.

15% is a tip for service. I am sure you are going to TGI Friday's and the like and expecting service like the Four Seasons.

To others...a restaurant usually adds on a tip of 15-20% for large parties MAINLY because usually someone is left holding the bag for the whole tip. This makes it easy to divide it out.

Still many people (poor slobs) will go out and eat with friends and then try to itemize the whole bill. When you eat out as a group divide it out evenly. If someone was having a premium entree or drinks they should take it on themselves to throw in extra.

You can always tip less than what they put on the check.

I usually make it a point not to tip out of principle.

If I think service has been exceptional, I tip.
The word "exceptional" meaning for every 100 waiters I experience, I may only give tips to about 10-20 of them.
It's part of your job. Being just "good" or "average" is not enough for it.

And as Fern mentioned, if waiters don't make enough from tips, management has to cover the salary till the minimum wage.
It's the law.
