Yes, because giving 30% to the waitress who treated you like crap all night and is already making $8/hr WITHOUT tips is the hallmark of civilization. While we're at it, we should really increase taxes and expand the welfare program...why, some people still think they have to work for their money!

Oh, and I tip. Fairly well, actually. I can't remember the last time I had such bad service that I didn't leave a tip. But I resent what tipping has become in this country, and I REALLY resent ignorant people like you who think that throwing money around when people haven't earned it makes you a good person, rather than simply a rich show-off.

Uh, apparently you didn't know that the minimum wage for servers is much lower. I got paid about $2.50 an hour when I was a server just a few years ago. So good job douche bag.

Uh, apparently you didn't know that there are states out there that require restaurants to pay their servers minimum wage, no exceptions.

And you want to know what makes this even funnier?

Tipping USED to be incentive for the waiter/waitress to do a good job - now days everyone has been programmed to tip automatically regardless of what service they get. Result? Service has gone down and people who don't tip are labeled "ass hats".

I agree--however, know your state's laws. Sometimes they are relying on your tip, sometimes they just want you to THINK that.

In the OP's case, California has a MINIMUM cash wage of $8/hr, with tips on top of that.

Pay more for the food then and have it already included in. Most restaurants pay the waiters and waitresses below minimum wage because they figure in tips...

Not everywhere.

Sorry I didn't have time to read 100 posts. Not tipping = douche bag anyways, so it doesn't really matter.

In a nutshell, if the company paid their workers appropriately, tipping wouldnt be required......

I do NOT tip EVER!

In fact, America is the only place in the world where tipping is expected, that I know of and i have travelled over 30 countries....

If I were you I'd either change that policy or avoid going back to a restaurant here in the USA often enough to be remembered by the staff ... that is unless you enjoy the flavor of special sauce! ;)

"Fairly well" usually meaning ~20-25%.

I usually tip 20% if the service was good; if it's horrible I'll leave 12%, sometimes 10% if the service sucked ass. I'll never leave w/o tipping because 1. I worked at an Arabic restaurant here and all the fucking stingy ass FOBs assumed I was like the owner's son or something which automatically means I don't get a tip; or even worse, they don't consider it real service ("aaaah it's just a takeout place with tables" "NO BITCH I'M A FUCKING WAITER") 2. waiter wage is like 2 or 3 dollars in Florida. I left a 25% tip at an upscale sushi place once, most of the dishes were expensive, we ordered cheaper ones ($12-18) and the service + food was kickass.

I've stopped eating out with people that don't leave tips.

Wether you would prefer going to the USA or not isn't the point ... anyplace I travel I take the time to learn the local customs & all you prove with a statement like "I don't tip ever" is that the same can't be said for you.

Also you fail at quoting.

Who cares?

Tipping is lame. That's all that can be said on the subject, and anyone who says otherwise is a pee pee head.

I don't remember the last time I was at a fancy/formal restaurant. Most of the places I eat are coffee house/sandwich shop typa places. I do tip a small amount even though it's not a custom around here. It's not because I want to 'support minimum wage workers that bust their ass working a thankless job'. I tip because of all the freebies I get and of course, the warm smiles. :D Plus it's great when you take a chick out to a place where the staff treats you like royalty. Small-time random poor guy that I am, I appreciate being treated nice every once in a rare while - even if it's just a small coffee shop.

How does "not tipping" for bad service make one a douche bag?

It's pointless to argue this on these forums. AT is full of perfectly logical, perfectly reasonable customer types who aren't willing to tip for bad service because they know that tips aren't a given and need to be earned.

Then you have a bunch of halfwits who can't get a better job than waiting tables and are motivated enough to bitch about the size of their paycheck but not motivated to get another job. Instead, they take their frustrations out on the undeserving customer by giving shait service.

These two 'factions' will always be butting heads; there's no point to argue with people who will stop at nothing to defend their imposing, deserving attitude like the world belongs to them and they shouldn't have to earn anything the hard way.

I think it just comes down to a dying work ethic.

Because you do tip for bad service. 1 cent that is.

I am so proud of you, OP! You finally managed to create an office complaint thread that didn't revolve around a female coworker. Have you turned a new leaf or is this an anomaly?

I'd rather have that extra tip going to those who deserve it or put it in my brother's piggy bank.

He can have his employer pay him the extra 1 cent or whatever is required to increase his salary from $2.13 to the state minimum wage.

If you think service is shitty in a tipping system imagine how bad it would be if your waiter knew he wasn't going to get a tip no matter how well he performed.

You don't realize the whole theory behind the 1 cent tip do you? It's the ultimate dick move. It's even more insulting than leaving no tip behind. At least the server can think that maybe someone swiped the tip, they just forgot, whatever.

But you leave a single penny on a table, the server knows you were pissed and hated the experience. They walk up to the table, start looking around for the tip, then see that single penny.
