I didn't start flaming them, they started flaming me.

They stop flaming I'll stop retaliating. Simple.

PS

I never run to the mods but it's obvious someone else is as posted in the now locked thread on Iraqi spies.

That is plain an simply untrue. Ive seen you insult anyone who disagrees with you or your sources and whom have never attacked you or your family.
It's always the other guy and it remains so even when the information is right under your nose.

The mods would have to be involved, block an "ip" perhaps. However i dont think this work for me and others, whenever i am banned from a game server i restart computer and can join once again( I think my ip changes after every restart, i have adsl).

The "silence" is the key. If you wish to blast someone and you are ignored totaly you will either go away or be making a lot of new names. But, you would be ignored at each attempt!

Well, it seems as if we here in P&N are gradually moving towards a consensus on the flaming policy. Great. I'm glad to see that along with everyone else. But can I put my 0.02 here to offer a suggestion? How about we ask the Mods to put the forum rules back up with a sticky like they had it before the current flamefest began. The P&N resolution that some of you are suggesting for the flaming among certain "elder statesman" does seem like a good idea, but it does take time. But for now, I believe this suggestion would be productive.

Your honor, I submit that the committee of 'elders' can, after debate and reasoned thought, derive the parameters of acceptable thread discourse. I know this is contrary to 'open' forum discussion and, in fact, may not be the answer. Maybe just ignoring offending posts is all that is needed but, that requires a commitment on the part of all the folks who get offended. I guess this means always being in our 'adult ego state' to work..

I think a few days at most. The rules did little to ban the flame. Folks got 'spanked' and then moderated a bit, I guess. Ignore what upsets you in the meantime. A vote to proceed would be in order at some time and with the concurrence of a sufficient number of folks the process of drafting could begin..

If someone has another suggestion please post it.

Hehe, LR, I was kind of hoping you might mis-interpret that as applying to mastertech and not your picking me as a judge as you correctly surmised. So you want to send a thief to catch a thief? I think a 'hot property' like myself should take a back seat role. I do believe there's something known as 'Robert's Rules' or something like that. Rules of civil debate, or something like that, no?

I have no opposition to your idea, by the way, LR, only to the notion of me playing some central role. I think I'm a bit out of the mainstream for that. :D

On Usenet, this practice is known as "killfile" or "PLONK". If a troll comes into a newsgroup, most posters block messages from this poster in their newsreader. As the saying goes: "ignore a troll and he will go away. Feed a troll and he will stay."

Mom said you'd not easily opt in.... but, you'd be essential to the committee as I envisioned it.. :D Six standard deviations to the left of the mean as it were :D Sure there are published rules but, too confining I'd think. I think, for instance, a remark that precedes or follows or is contained in a comment, opinion or rebuttal that serves no purpose other than to cut down the quoted or implied quoted author that is superfluous and demeaning is a flame. IMO.

Roberts Rules of Order
in the Asbestos Bound Forum Edition.

When you see a flame fest outbreak the first thing to do is to send in Ducks to stamp out the flames.
The you bring in a heard of Elephants to stamp out the burning Ducks.

I don't know if that feature can be incorporated in this forum. My limited knowledge suggests; for technical reasons. But, the 'silence' can result in similar effect. It would take a lot of self control.. and agreement from everyone that a 'silence' will be imposed on violators... but, fairness is essential.
Heck, I might get silenced myself by seemingly acting as if I was 'enlightened' as UQ said I tried to show. :)

The problem with a big % of the people who insult here, in my opinion, is that they have lived their lives in conclaves of conformity and have never been challenged in their lives. To confront truth, or at least some alternative point of view, is like a slap in the face. They have never had their ideas questioned and have no idea how to respond except with petulant childish tantrums. This, I fear, would be maintained if there were an 'Ignore Feature'. Why be here if you only want to listen to yourself. Take a shower and talk to the walls.

There is a big page of logical fallacies on the web and if somebody had the energy they could call people on their posts, ad hominum etc. and so on down the line.

Thank you MB.

Try being locked in jail with Murderers and Rapists and facing 120 years prison time for downloading a screensaver.

I wholly admit to giving a flip about Politics until I was personally attacked by the top Officials of this State. You can easily see why I for the most part ignore the troll type posts done by a few in here, they can never compare to a Governor or Senator saying you should go to jail for the rest of your life over a screensaver and saying it was the worst computer crime they have ever seen. This is in writing from them. They are now no longer in Office as of last election.

You know what? That's a lie. But it doesn't matter 'cause if you believe it to you it's true even though it is a lie.

There really is no point talking to people here any longer. They're just gonna' believe whatever they want to even in the face of facts.

I have a better idea how to end flaming here. At least the flaming I've been doing as retaliation.

I'm outta' here. Bye.

You admit to flaming in "retaliation"

Thos are two words people should try not to use and do here, I know it's hard, but.

dmcowen674, are you trying to take my incomprehensibility crown. What the hell are you talking about and what does it have to do with what I said? Just curious you understand since I feel your passion but comprehend nothing of your point.

BOBDN, You also may as well eat some worms. "Big fat juicy ones, little skinny crawly ones, I'm going to eat some worms." If you take your ball and go home the only people who suffer are like me.

You know, its not just personal insults that make this place bad. Personally, some things are IMO worse.

exhibit A (3rd post) - Hijackings with the aim of mindless bashing. I admit that Ornery calling me 'spudnut' did not make me 1/10th as mad this post.

exhibit B - acting like a f-cking drama queen. seems like a pretty sensible guy when he debates seriously, but stupid acting is extremely annoying. I've done this once or twice and will never do it again.

exhibit C (sorry, no link) - indirect insults aimed at certain groups. Things like "Oh, you didn't support globalization? Why did you wish to see millions of people suffer? Why are you so cruel, cold hearted and full of hatered?" etc...

IMO, those should be treated the same as (if not worse) than personal attackes, since these are MUCH more common and tolerated, yet do just as much damage as insults.

We understand this - the point is for us all to stop doing it - not dredge it up and accuse.

Today has been somewhat better IMO, but there is plenty of time left in it.

I don't know guys, censorship is censorship. I kind of like this forum, as is. Yeah some people should be better behaved, myself included. But heck at sharky's they don't have any kind of OT forums. Keep up the good non-work mods.

It's nice to have a place to vent, and get out what you believe and bounce it off others to see if you are as crazy as you think you are. ;)

Not if we're self censoring our context so as not to upset one another.
Plain vanilla, politically correct. No FlameFest - No Barbeque.

Oh, excuse me CAD - care for more fries with your hamburger ?
Moonie - another Bud ?
UQ - Evian or Perrier ?

It's like WWF acting as English Butlers.

An intersprinkling of humor, even sarcasticly, helps.
