How is any gun seller going to know if the buyer has mental health problems? Or do you have to have a doctors report to buy a gun?

Background check. The key language is "history" of mental health problems. Obviously your gun shop is not going to diagnose your mental health.

Fucking media is a goddamn joke with respect to this situation. So much false information. Switching the brothers' names? WTF?

That's actually the fault of the police.

If reports are correct, he killed his mom at the house and then went to the school. The sick fuck was intent on shooting the school despite his mom never being at the school during the shooting. Absolute sickening.

Thats what I was wondering. Health records are usually highly confidential (for obvious reasons) and you guys dont have a centralised health service so I was wondering how anyone would get the required records.

i don't know specifics but they probably have some sort of flag on the files they have on that person that indicates yes or no for mental health issues. They probably don't have the details of the person's mental health issues, like specific conditions or whatever.

Since the suspect is only 20 and CT handgun laws prevent the transfer or sale of a handgun to anyone under 21, suspect most likely obtained them illegally.

http://usnews.nbcnews.com/_news/201...pons-used-in-connecticut-school-massacre?lite

The weapons used in Friday’s shooting at Sandy Hook Elementary School in Newtown, Conn., were legally purchased and registered to Nancy Lanza, the mother of the gunman, Adam Lanza, two law enforcement officials told NBC News.
Too bad she didn't have them locked up.

http://www.theatlanticwire.com/national/2012/12/newtown-connecticut-school-shooting/59999/
4:52 p.m: Neighbors described Adam Lanza to ABC as “odd” and displaying characteristics associated with mental illness.

This would shed more light on an earlier report from Newtown Patch where Lanza blamed the shooting on his "developmentally disabled brother."

You don't have to be hospitalized, just have to be reasonably known to be a nut and you can't sell or give weapons to that person. Now the problem is if he wasn't "adjudicated" as having a mental defect and just suspected like so many are.

This is what we need to fix too, all these people out there claim they are autistic/aspergers whatever need to be properly diagnosed and put into a database preventing the ownership of weapons and they need to be monitored and forced into treatment.

Yep...he can be receiving treatment and taking meds for his problems...but until a judge actually rules that he's "mentally deficient," the laws don't prevent him from LEGALLY owning firearms.

(obviously, no laws will prevent anyone from ILLEGALLY owning firearms)

The news said that he was carrying his brother's ID for whatever reason. They also went on to say that by killing the kids it is also killing a part of her.

its very likely that this will turn out to be another oswald/hinckley/mark david chapman/9-11 situation in which the cia used a mind contolled/brainwashed individual to commit a monstrous act in order to achieve some massive social/military objective like the further disarming of america or greater government/police control of peoples private lives

You would also have to be diagnosed for a mental illness as well. How many of these people have actually been to a doctor and had their mental 'alignment' shall we say, examined?

that doesn't make sense since she was already dead. it would make sense if he left her alive.

Maybe he got her keys while she slept. Stop pretending there is anything that can stop crazies.

Accept it, shit like this will always be possible.

Of course it will. And I don't recall ever saying there was a way to stop things like this. In this case, had the guns been locked up, it MAY have stopped him from going to the school, although he could have found another way to kill his mother. Locking up your guns is kind of a common sense thing, at least in my family. Or maybe, as you postulated, they were locked up and he found a way to access them. Who knows at this point.

Tragic story. Feel terrible for the parents & families of those kids & the teacher(s). If someone has issues that are that bad, jump in a cold lake, don't kill kids.
