Your mom isn't an audiophile. She probably wouldnt be able to tell the difference. It's her money, and if she says buy it even after you told her that there is better out there, then she obviously doesn't care.

So my mom here wants to buy the Bose Lifestyle 48 system. I keep telling her for the three thousand and what ever change it costs, I can configure her a much nicer system that would sound much better. But she keeps telling me she doesn't give a damn and just wants the Bose system. It's kind of annoying....she wants me to order it tonight too. So I kind of have some pressure. I think I may have to give in.. Are they as bad as people say they are? I have a pair of Bose Triports and have the Bose SOundDock for my iPod, and am happy with those. Should I risk me life and convince her not to get it? Or just go with it and put an order through...? TIA.

"...To reiterate the above, the Acoustimass's bass module responds to 46 Hz to 202 Hz at ±2.3 dB, while the satellites respond to 280 Hz to 13.3 KHz at ±10.5 dB. This is, by the way, the only speaker that I have ever seen tested with a ±10.5 db allowance. Still, this leaves a frequency gap between the satellites and bass module of about 80 Hz! That is 80 hertz of sound that is completely erased within the system's internal crossovers! I wonder how Bose figured out which 80 hertz matters least in the audible spectrum? I will tell you though that that gap accounts for a HUGE loss in midrange sound, which is responsible for the majority contralto, baritone, and tenor vocals in music, and many sound effects in home theater. And let us not forget that the Acoustimass system also ignores audible signal from 20Hz to 45Hz on the low end (deep bass), and 13KHz to 20KHz on the high end (high treble). Do the math folks, this Bose system only produces 13,176 of the 19,980 Hertz in the audible sound spectrum. That's only ~66% of the actual recording being played back to you! Is this the kind of performance you'd expect from a $1300 product?..."

If BOSE sux so horribly, how is it that they continue to be in business, decades longer than other ostensibily "good" companies ????
Anyone?
Buehler?
I guess the marketplace > internet audio gurus.
Buy her the BOSE, Load her CD's into the LIFESTYLE system, praise her wisdom at purchasing something so inherently simple to operate, profit.

Geez, I swear whenever there is a poll on this forum relating to someone's mom 99% of the forum immediately sides with the parent. We all know very well that there are systems out there that can kick the crap out of this for 1000 bucks, so why not show that to your mom along with some negative reviews of the bose product? Nothing wrong with saving money for your mom and getting a superior product since she "can't tell a difference anyways".

Never underestimate the power of good marketing.
Hell, look at George W. Bush. Arguably the dumbest man to ever inhabit the White House, but his marketer, Karl Rove, convinced everyone that Georgie was going to save us from terrorists, gays, sex ed, abortion, atheists, and our jobs, so he won!
Likewise with Bose. They've convinced everyone that their systems sound really really good and are worth lots of money. Not true, but perception is reality for some.
