Hey, those are nice. Do they sound at least as good as the Bose system?
I'll tell you this right now, the audiophiles over at avsforum.com absolutely LOVE those Orb speakers. And those guys know what they are talking about. Pair those with one of these thing Panny receivers I've heard talked about, and your mother might think it's a stylish, bitchin' system.

Nice man! The OP's mother may not buy 'em, but I'm definitely gonna check them out. Thanks!

Honestly, I think the cheaper route with some Bose stickers would be the perfect solution. It will impress her friends at a cheaper price and the same (or better) quality sound.

which is why you should spend 1/5 on something that will produce identical sound, since she wouldn't be able to "appreciate it". I don't see what there is to argue about this, it makes perfect sense.

First of all, you're mom just wants to spend a ton of money to impress people. This should be all the indication anyone needs to know that she doesn't know what she actually wants or have any clue about the quality and cost of what she's going to be buying. Since Bose is a name that the people she's trying to impress will recognize, she wants that. I'm sorry, but that is just plain stupid. Buy some different speakers that sound as good for much less (or better for less or the same money), and then buy some fake Bose emblems and slap them on the new speakers.

There's no reason to try to defend the stupidity of the mother in this case. As her son, the OP should be trying to get here something that is a quality product, especially for the price his mother is paying. To try to accuse him of being a bad son because that is what he was trying to do is ludicrous.
Furthermore, the reason we "internet audiophiles" are concerned is that if people keep buying a shoddy, overpriced product then the company will not change its ways and will continue to sell subpar for the money products to consumers who don't know any better. At this point in time, the Bose name is known well enough that they could stop spending so much money on marketing and instead develop a high quality product worth buying. This situation is exactly why and how Bose stays in business, because people who don't know any better buy their product, either because some college dropout at Best Buy is trying to get some comission or because they go, hey, I've heard of Bose, I'll buy that since its expensive it must be good. Bottom line is if people keep buying an underperforming product, that company will keep selling an underperforming product. This is bad for consumers (blah, blah, blah, I know you'll retort with the, but they're willing to buy it for that price, so its just simple economics, but that is just stupid, and ignoring the fact that there's more to it than just sticking your head in the sand).

No, Bose is not total crap, you do actually get somewhat of something you pay for, but you can get just as good looking and sounding for much less or maybe even better sounding for less.

whata goofy reply!!!
Here let me highlight the goofyness!

Dood!! Your age is showing all over your replie.....13yrs old huh?

Mom gets what mom wants hands down!
You don`t argue with mom!
It doesn`t matter the reasons. Its mom`s money and she obviously wants the Bose.
Whats so hard about respecting mom`s wishes?
I am sure mom would know the difference if you bought something else....
Adults are not stoopid!!
get her the damn Bose!!

Mom is not likely audio or tech savy so trying to show her reviews isn't going to do any good. My guess is she's going for the Bose because of two factors:

1) Name recognition
2) Ease of use

You could try to show her something that's equally well known (Denon, Harman Kardon, Sunfire, Renegade, Rotel, Paradigm, Nohr, Orb, etc.) and get something that will easily operate the whole system for which I would recommend one of the Logitech Harmony remotes. Dead simple to setup and you can't get much easier operation than one of them. Press the button that's labeled "Watch TV" and it does the rest, pretty much idiot proof IMHO. If you can get her into a real audio store (ie NOT Circuit City and Best Buy) and show her the difference in audio (b/c I'm sure she's heard the Bose sound system) then perhaps you can sway her. But if she's stubborn and wants to stick with Bose let her get it.

Note to JediYODA: Frankly most parents actually do appreciate it when their kids give them advice on technology purchases. Lots of kids are tech savy nowadays (not saying that parents aren't) and I would say that they're in a larger proportion than tech savy parents. Sure there are some parents that do not care to listen and that's fine, that's their choice. But don't automatically assume that parents do not want to listen to their kids on tech purchases. I'm not a kid anymore (28) but my parents have been taking my advice on tech purchases for somewhere in the neighborhood of 14 years.

$1300 total. No research. You can do better. Small cube speakers with a real sub. A few hundred more CD capacity. Sorry about the sony part.

I have the Onkyo at home (great receiver for the price). Hooked up into this system:
AperionAudio.com

Aperion sells only direct through the internet. They pay for shipping and you get to try them out for 30 days. If you don't like them, ship them back and they'll flip the bill.

Total when I bought it was about $1800. If you want to go cheaper, you can get their entry level system for about $700 (just for the speakers). They come in cherry or a piano black.

Let me guess, you're the owner of a Bose system you bought at Best Buy, making sure to pay for their extended warranty and Monster cables all around?

If you actually believe that I was meaning to literally buy something else, telling her its Bose and then putting some fake emblems on them, then I just don't know what to say. I mean, its not like she'd notice the lack of the word Bose on any of several large boxes that show up, right? Oh wait, she's just a parent, that means she's a complete idiot who doesn't know anything and is both blind and deaf.

I would've replied to your post where you quote me, but to be honest, I can't even understand WTF you said, so I figure it was pointless, since you're at least somewhat coherent in this post.

Its obvious that its pretty much futile to get the mother to buy anything other than the Bose, but to make it sound like the OP is being a bad son because he was at least trying to help her maximize her money just baffles me, but it apparently makes sense to someone. Oh, wait, thats right, the parents are always right, how dare anyone question them?

So what part of this didn`t you understand?

So my mom here wants to buy the Bose Lifestyle 48 system. I keep telling her for the three thousand and what ever change it costs, I can configure her a much nicer system that would sound much better. But she keeps telling me she doesn't give a damn and just wants the Bose system. It's kind of annoying....she wants me to order it tonight too. So I kind of have some pressure. I think I may have to give in. . Are they as bad as people say they are? I have a pair of Bose Triports and have the Bose SOundDock for my iPod, and am happy with those. Should I risk me life and convince her not to get it? Or just go with it and put an order through...? TIA.

You see what none of us asked the OP is another simple question....
Possibly his mother won`t listen to his suggestions because he could be a complete jerk for a son and not actually know anything about this subject...
Or Dear Mom has asked him in the past for opinions and his opinions have turned out to be jusat that an opinion that went sour....

Mom knows what she wants ao why post in this forum to begin with?

All these kiddies saying Bose are a bad product obviously have not read reviews on this equipment!
Other than the high price I have read alot of reviews saying this was a very good system!
Google.com for reviews....

So what part of what I am saying doesn`t make sense?

Bose systems do sound nice, but you can get the same quality equipment for half the price. For Bose, about half of what you are paying for is for the name (which goes to marketing, so the name gets more recognition, which means more people buy bose, which means more marketing, and the cycle continues.) Bose has done a great job making expensive stuff look like it sounds amazing.

I didn't bother to read to see if you already bought the Bose, but if not, have your mom read Consumer Reports. As an old person myself, I put a lot more faith in CR than I do in tech-junkie know-it-alls. She is not looking for the best technology, highest power, latest gadgets, etc. She wants a name-brand, reliable product that looks good, is easy to use, and comes from a company with a good name. Bose meets all those requirements. But so does Sony, and a few others.

Consumer Reports compares some theater-in-a-box models (admittedly lower end than this Lifestyle model) but the article has some good info. She may read something there that makes her question what she needs.

I came up with the recommendation based on reviews I read at avsforum (just like the other posters mentioned). From what I've read, they are supposed to be amazing and a good value at their price points. I haven't personally listened to either though.
