People are stupid. Especially the general american public that's been brainwashed by the loads of advertisement and marketing of bullshit that's shoved down everyone's throats.
On top of that, the very nature of bose speakers appeals to stupid people - dumbed down, savvy looking, iconic products.
The best has never been the most popular. People are more interested in form rather than functionality. This is true in most electronics. That's why apple is so successful with their well packaged ******.

Um, that's what makes them far worse. They use the same hardware as PC's, yet they're a lot more expensive, and their upgradability options are horrid.

I can argue the same thing as you for bose too.
Bose uses the same speakers designs as other competitors too. Except, like apple, they cost a lot more for the same thing from the competitor. But they still do well because "they look nice".
Wow, you're dumber then I thought. First off, Bose products are NOT the same as it's competitors. They're significantly worse, and are grossly overpriced.
Now, look at the MacBook laptop from Apple. I'm sure it would be very hard-pressed to find a Core Duo laptop with a 13" widescreen display with that form factor for $1200 elsewhere. Don't forget to mention the iLife suite you're getting for free, as well as the opportunity to use OS X, which is significantly better then Windows, IMO. The argument that Apple's are vastly overpriced just doesn't hold up anymore. The MacBook Pro does cost a premium over other laptops, I agree, but you also get a build quality that is second-to-none. It's also the only pro laptop in the world that can boot both OS X and Windows.

Lastly, I'm no "Microsoft Sucks" fanboy. My Mac is a 5-year-old iMac G4 700MHz that I use semi-often. My main system is a custom built Athlon 64 PC with an Apple 30" display. Douchebag.
Oh, and BTW, Fujitsu Toughbooks don't exist 😉. If you're thinking of Panny Toughbooks, those are a completely different market sector then Apple's systems. To bring out a car analogy again, that's comparing a Lexus to a Humvee.

There's no way I would ever pay that much for a Bose system. Your mother doesn't seem like an audiophile considering she's going for a Bose system. You can build a system that's as good for half that price. You could build her a really nice system for that $3000 (that she probably won't appreciate) or you can save her some cash and build her an equivalent system for less.

Sure, it may not suck but why pay so much for something that is just mediocre? If you had the option of paying the same amount for a Hyundai as you would a BMW, would you choose the Hyundai just because it doesn't completely suck? Sure the Hyundai gets the job done but you can get a much better product for the same price. Or if you're looking for Hyundai quality, you can shop around and get that quality for a much lower price.
Don't reward companies with overpriced, mediocre products by buying those products. Buy products that are actually worth your dollar, and aren't hyped up.

This thread is ridiculous. Somehow its turned into like 3 different threads on its own. The parent-son/daughter relationship argument, a Bose thread (which never end well), and an Apple vs PC thread.
First of all, you're mom just wants to spend a ton of money to impress people. This should be all the indication anyone needs to know that she doesn't know what she actually wants or have any clue about the quality and cost of what she's going to be buying. Since Bose is a name that the people she's trying to impress will recognize, she wants that. I'm sorry, but that is just plain stupid. Buy some different speakers that sound as good for much less (or better for less or the same money), and then buy some fake Bose emblems and slap them on the new speakers.
There's no reason to try to defend the stupidity of the mother in this case. As her son, the OP should be trying to get here something that is a quality product, especially for the price his mother is paying. To try to accuse him of being a bad son because that is what he was trying to do is ludicrous.
Furthermore, the reason we "internet audiophiles" are concerned is that if people keep buying a shoddy, overpriced product then the company will not change its ways and will continue to sell subpar for the money products to consumers who don't know any better. At this point in time, the Bose name is known well enough that they could stop spending so much money on marketing and instead develop a high quality product worth buying. This situation is exactly why and how Bose stays in business, because people who don't know any better buy their product, either because some college dropout at Best Buy is trying to get some comission or because they go, hey, I've heard of Bose, I'll buy that since its expensive it must be good. Bottom line is if people keep buying an underperforming product, that company will keep selling an underperforming product. I'll tell you this right now, the audiophiles over at avsforum.com absolutely LOVE those Orb speakers. And those guys know what they are talking about. Pair those with one of these thing Panny receivers I've heard talked about, and your mother might think it's a stylish, bitchin' system.
