Iron Maiden - Powerslave, Phantom of the Opera, Fear of the Dark (tons)
Jerry Cantrell - Anger Rising
Opeth - Leper's Afinity, Blackwater Park
Who - Relay

Off the top of my head

All opeth albums = 🙂🙂🙂🙂🙂🙂🙂🙂

the RIAA hates me after I read this thread 🙂. here's some i can think of:

slayer - raining blood (at the beginning)
refused - new noise
tool - 46&2, stinkfist
rage - basically their entire first album (s/t)

I would have to go with the awesome headbanging riff after the opera section in Queen's "Bohemian Rhapsody." Pure fuggen metal! \m/

I've been listening to this cool song called For the Stabwounds in our Backs by some band called Amon Amarth.

The music is pretty cool. Not a big fan of the death metal screamers, but oh well.

Slayer - Mandatory Suicide

One of the first riffs I learned to play when I got my first guitar 🙂

Lots of awesome riffage mentioned already 🙂
Here's a few more metal riffs:
Fasttaker on Manowar's 1st album. Awesome bass riff by Joey DeMaio, as always 🙂
Ghost in the Ruins by Savatage. Man, i just love that lead guitar part.

Rock riffs:
Green Grass & High Tides by The Outlaws

Hmmm, based just on riffs it poses an interesting challenge... i'm a blues man so i'm gonna have to go with Voodoo Chile (Slight Return)

Though I don't like the band much I think Metallica's "Enter Sandman" has a truly great riff. Trouble is, it's like a lot of Zep songs - it's become such a cliche that it's hard to appreciate it.

I'd much rather listen to the Stooges or MC5 anyway.

Although just about any AC/DC song would make it, Highway To Hell is one of the best.
I have attended many concerts where they would play that before the concert started and as soon
as it started, the crowd would erupt. Same said for the Who's Won't Get Fooled Again.

AC/DC's Thunderstruck? Heck YEAH! Back in Black was one of my friend's favs but I like something with a little more aggression and speed.

Seek and Destroy is one of my favs as well for metal. For more rock riffs, gosh... Rush has a ton of em. I'll just go with YYZ for now, so many riffs so little time.

Zeppelin's "Heartbreaker", kick ACE!

Iron Maiden, Afraid to Shoot Strangers, the one that comes in right around 2:44.
Maiden, Fear of the Dark intro, sooo beautiful.
Symphony X, Sea of Lies, I love that one.
Roayl Hunt, Legion of the Damned, softie 🙂
Queensryche, Eyes of the Stranger

Well, that'll have to do it for now 🙂

Best Riff Evar - Lynard Skynard - Freebird

Runners up:
Stabbing Westward - Torn Apart (best riff of 1999 rolling stone) i think it was '99 anyway, might been '98 or '00
Deftones - Passenger

Yeah, Zeppelin is going to rule this list. Page was a master of making "hooks", or catchy riffs. Black Dog is a good example...the whole song is nothing but a riff (an excellent one at that 😀 ).

I can not believe no one has mentioned

Ozzy - Crazy Train

one of the most widely recognized and used metal riffs out there.

Not exactly a riff, but the solo from Metallica's "One" is top notch. Green Jello/Jelly's "3 Little Pigs" deserves a nod.

46&2 is by far the coolest riff listed in this thread, but it should be noted that it was totally ripped off of a song by King Crimson (can't remember which one), who are influences of Tool's and have toured with them.

as for rage, since Morello has only written one riff over and over and over and over and over for both rage and audioslave, you might be better off just saying "the tom morello riff." oops, smashing pumpkins did it better with "i am one" in 1991. oh well. we can call it the "smashing pumpkins riff."
