Best rock or metal riff ever ?

My votes..

Led Zeppelin - Heartbreaker

Black Sabbath - Lord of this World

Jimi Hendrix - Purple Haze

Iggy & the Stooges - Search and Destroy

Hmmmm. That's a tough one.

Since I'm a metalhead, I'm going to go with metal.. The stuff you listed would go under "rock", as far as I'm concerned. 😛

I'm going to say.. Metallica - Master of Puppets

But there are so many good ones.

Here's another vote for Master of Puppets.

Another good metallica riff is To Live is To Die

I'm totally oblivious to this whole heavy guitar genre (i listen to mostly trance/classics/movie scores/some mainstream)

what's the diff between Metal vs Rock?

Probably going to be pretty subjective..

For me, it has mostly to do with the guitarwork of the song. Usually fast tempo, palm-muted modular riffs.

Most rock songs have little to no "crunch".. just distorted strummed chords.

Goog call with Master of Puppets.

I've always been partial to Seek and Destroy. Had the intro rif on my answering machine before.

😀

Yeah, that one crossed my mind. The riff during the fast middle solo part is my favorite, though.

The intro to Sweet Child O' mine is awesome, the rest of the song is much more "rocky" than metal though, IMO.

Intro to Sweet Child of Mine. 🙂 That riff rocks me.

I also kinda like the Scorpions - Rock you like a Hurricane 😉

Another metalhead here 🙂

It's impossible to pick just one, but I'd say Pantera - Shedding Skin has one of the best (Heavy) Metal riffs I've ever heard & played. Actually the whole Far Beyond Driven album is filled with the most amazing riffs ever 🙂 Definetly in my Top 3 Metal albums of all time.

Lou Reed and Velvet Underground - Heroin

Great song. Definitely one of the best lyrical songs ever.

I'm adding:
MC5 - Kick out the Jams
Led Zeppelin - Communication Breakdown
Kinks - You Realy Got Me
Fu Manchu - Regal Begal
Troggs - I Want You
Rolling Stones - Satisfaction

Good calls.

Like I said.. there are just so many.

Iron Maiden - Number of the Beast is an awesome riff. So is Iced Earth's version of Maiden's - Transylvania..

Thrice has some sweet riffs. Check out the songs below for a sample:

Identity Crisis
T & C
Kill Me Quickly
Deadbolt
To Awake and Avenge the Dead (especially at 2:21 in the song)

Heartbreaker is sweet, so is The Ocean, and well, most Zep songs. I honestly can't pick a best single one though.
