Thrice is Awesome! Especially in "Deadbolt" and "See You In The Shallows"

Thursday, Juliana Theory, Injected, Union Underground, Apartment 26, and 30 Seconds to Mars are great bands too!

Yeah, the ending with all the overdubs is quite good. But for a one-take, no overdub Zeppelin solo I'd have to choose The Lemon Song.

I'd also add Cream's live Crossroads and the third stanza of Jeff Beck's Going Down. That was WAY ahead of its time.

Riff or Rif
  1. A member of any of several Berber peoples inhabiting Er Rif.
  2. The Berber language of this people.
Oh, that's not it? ;)

Let's try this:
riff
Music. A short rhythmic phrase, especially one that is repeated in improvisation
There, is that better? :)

I'm totally oblivious to this whole heavy guitar genre (i listen to mostly trance/classics/movie scores/some mainstream)

what's the diff between Metal vs Rock?
Probably going to be pretty subjective..

For me, it has mostly to do with the guitarwork of the song. Usually fast tempo, palm-muted modular riffs.

Most rock songs have little to no "crunch".. just distorted strummed chords.

I've always considered Sabbath metal because of their music's "crunchiness". :)
Yeah, you're right. Sabbath is definately metal. I'm not familiar with the song mentioned in the first post, though.

That's probably the crunchiest Sabbath song ever, man!

Listen to it. It's on the Master of Reality album.
That whole album is awesome and full of heavy riffs
... Sweet Leaf, Children of th eGrave, Lord of this World, Into the Void..

YAMHH = Yet Another Metal Head Here :)

There's simply sooo many to choose from. Some from the top of my head:

Rhapsody's Emerald Sword and Holy Thunderforce (such energy, wow!)
Iced Earth has lots of them in Dante's Inferno and Wolf (amazing songs)
Children of Bodom have some good ones in Needled 24/7 and The Trooper.
Dark Tranquility...damn there's so many...most notable ones are Punish My Heaven, Lethe, One Brooding Warning, Zodijackyl Light, Scythe Rage and Roses, The Mind's Eye.
And finally, what is undoubtedly the most original metal band I've heard, Apocalyptica with Pray!, Path and Apprehension and especially Hall of the Mountain King.

Bulls On Parade is a good one.

Bodycount - There Goes The Neighborhood

Sex Pistols. EMI

And the kind of all rifs....

The Beatles - The End

Paul, George, and John riffing in succession. John's final "I dont give a sh*t rif" on the song rocks to no end.

Deep Purple - Smoke on the Water; or, better yet, Black Sabbath's slightly harder cover of it.

I can understand why she would say that...

The effect in that riff is called a Flanger.

It's even recognizable when I play it.

Use slightly less distortion and it would sound almost exactly like the "real thing" (IMHO).

BTW, Iron Maiden - Wasted Years is great, too (especially the solo, which includes part of the intro). I want to learn to play it on my cornet (don't have an electric guitar :().
