Taking it down to count, shows only post it notes were used.

Pennies it held was.....................253 which comes out to 1.394 pounds. it could have held more, but we ran out of pennies.

This was a joint venture between me, freshgeardude and my brother, thescreensavers.

nicely done!

Sorry, I was out rock climbing. :p

Based on that 253 result and only being limited by the number of pennies, I've sent a PM to The Boston Dangler (the fearless leader of this week's challenge) to see if we should keep the challenge as is or alter it.

Seeing as the limit was the number of pennies your group had, freshgeardude, would you guys have any objections or opinions on making the requirements different so people would be less likely to run out of pennies?

Of course the decision is totally up to The Boston Dangler, but I think that it might be appropriate to make the height requirement higher, reduce the number of Post-Its, or both.

well I for one dont want a change.

we spent a lot of time on it and deserve the effort to be counted. If you do change it, ours should still count at 253.

the best deal is to not change it and just sit with it for this week.

Maybe I put the standards up high? :)

the whole folding the post it notes into a triangle/circular came from us right? hehe It really holds alot of weight :)

When we were just building it I put 5 pounds on top of 4 it was holding till I put a book ontop of it and one of the legs failed lol.

Well the 6" lends itself to having two layers of supports that are 3" high each. That's what I was planning from the beginning.

I'm glad that 2 7/8" Post-Its are actually 3" :p
(They are, right? I'm not just bad at measuring?)

after some careful consideration, the rules as stated remain intact. abrupt rules changes are for emergencies, and running out of pennies (in this context) is not an emegency.

Yes, I can fit a finger between the band and my wrist.

My point in putting the washers on was to find the maximum it could hold.

This was my first tower design and based on my results, I think it could probably hold 650+ pennies.

When your group had your hold 253 pennies, I already thought that we needed to change it as to not have people unable to participate due to running out of pennies.

Now that I suspect people are going to have to use $7.00 or more worth of pennies, I think it's ridiculous. This is really more of a "see how many pennies you can stack carefully" than a tower competition ;)

Hmmm....

http://wiki.answers.com/Q/How_..._does_a_US_penny_weigh

I knew the composition of pennies has changed over the years, but I didn't know it was going to affect it that much (3.11 grams vs. 2.5 grams per penny).

Assuming an average of 2.8 grams per penny, that means that 162 pennies is about a pound?

So 477 pennies is about 3 pounds worth
647 is about 4 pounds worth

Wow, I missed this competition last week. Wish I had seen it though.

Now I have to see how many pennies I can find around the house.

I think you'll find that the majority of the pennies you had were the newer pennies @ 2.5 grams. I had already considered the jar of wheat pennies, but realized that would be handicapping myself by a pretty significant percentage!

Yeah, I'm at work without the pennies I used.

I was only able to scrounge 18 more pennies from around the office :p

Maybe it's time to make a trip to the bank ;)

EDIT: I checked out the 18 pennies I have access to. 1/3 are the heavier ones.

Ok, I have another whole bunch of pennies now.

I'd have to estimate about 800-900 now total.

HomeBrewerDude wants to try a tower as well, so my plan is to bring the pennies to work today and let him take them home tonight.

If all goes well, he'll remember to bring them back to me Friday so that I can try one more tower over the weekend.
