If I started this back up, would anyone be interested in participating? (please reply in the thread so I can see if there is some interest. I was the only person to participate in the last creative challenge and one of two for the engineering challenge)

"Week 4" challenge postponed due to jellonic issues

THIS WEEK'S CHALLENGES

Week 3 Engineering Category - Horizontal Post-It Note Structure (Presented by YOyoYOhowsDAjello)

Materials:
24 standard size 3"x3" Post-It Notes
As many US (or Canadian) unmodified pennies that you want to use

Horizontal structure supporting a penny

The only surface your structure can touch is the top of a table / desk / whatever you choose as long as the top surface is parallel to the floor

Post-Its and Pennies can be anywhere in the design, but the measurement will be parallel to the floor from the edge of the table to the nearest edge of your penny

Goal: Maximize the horizontal distance of a penny supported on your structure.

Rules: Included in the above images... You can only build on the "green" surface (top surface) of a table / desk / something similar with a surface parallel to the floor.
You can include Pennies and Post-It notes anywhere in the design, but no more than 24 Post-It Notes total.
Measurement is done from the edge of the table to the near edge of the farthest penny.

To submit: Include At LEAST 3 PICTURES of the structure. One of which must show the measurement in the picture. Only your latest submission counts.

Week 3 Creative Category - ATOT Mascot using modified found objects (Presented by YOyoYOhowsDAjello)

Materials:
Found objects
At least one must be "computer related"

Goal: Create a mascot for ATOT

At least one object used to create the artwork must be "computer related". I don't have a good definition for this, but if you're unsure about whether it would count, post in here and ask. I guess I'll be the judge of that.
Some wikipedia articles about different forms of artwork related to this...
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Multimedia_artist
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Found_object

So basically, create an ATOT mascot using primarily found objects. At least one of those found objects must be "computer related". You can modify any of these found objects to your heart's desire including by the use of any traditional artist's methods (painting, drawing, etc.)

To submit:
Include at least 2 pictures of your ATOT mascot.
Include a list of found objects you included in your mascot.

Week 4 Challenge due to start: ASAP after the winner pick a new challenge (hopefully on July 28th, 2009)

Preface (reading this is not required? well none of this is really :p )

As some of you have noticed, it can get kind of slow and boring some days around here. I guess that?s a little sad on multiple levels?

I have a history of many threads that ended up being terrible ideas and others that seemed to take off. In the spirit of adding some original content to the forum, my new idea is to coordinate a set of weekly challenges for ATOT to show off their engineering and creative prowess.

I have student taught (or had practicums) in several middle schools and I?ve always liked doing these sort of competitions with students as well as participating myself. I?ve been creating some random stuff for ATOT threads over the years, but I think it might be nice and encourage more participation to put it in some sort of competition context.

Overview

My goal is to coordinate a weekly challenge in which any ATOT member can participate given that they have the materials or resources necessary for the week?s challenge.

My tentative plan is:

Day 1: The winner of the last challenge will select a new challenge for the category they won (or I will select something if they are not available)

Day 1-5: Anyone on Anandtech has the opportunity to work on their submission and either post it in the thread or PM it to me

Day 6-7: I will update the OP with the week?s entries for each category and make a poll with all the entries received. Some of these competitions will be quantitative and some qualitative, so I?ll have any quantitative information provided with the poll options. (This may be changed to a straight declaration of winner later, but I thought maybe the poll option could provide some sort of democratic control for evaluating if entries met the challenge?s specific rules?)

Concerns

It would be nice if the challenges only included materials that are easily found. I?m thinking office materials and such. There?s also the issue that not all materials are created equally? there?s quite a bit of variation in paper thickness and such.

The main goal here is fun. I hope that actually happens :p

Categories

Please let me know if you think there are any categories that you think should be added and are substantial enough that there would be enough challenges to go for several weeks.

Right now the two that seemed obvious to me were ?engineering? and ?creative? categories.

If you have any ideas for competitions in the categories, post them in the thread and I?ll add them to my pitiful list of things I?ve thought of ahead of time so that we have a better pool of ideas to draw upon if the weekly winner doesn?t have their own idea.

Future ideas (not this week's challenge):

Engineering:

  1. 8.5?x11? + tape tower (for height)

  1. Paper boat challenge (lots of variations on this one? hold the most cargo, or float the longest given cargo, etc.)

Creativity:

  1. Dug777 petition (sort of creativity? how many people can you convince to sign a ?save dug777? petition)

What do I win?

You mean recognition and pride from this isn?t enough? Maybe I?ll think of something better, but I?ll plan on sending out an ?official ATOT challenge winner? certificate by e-mail or actual mail (if you send me your address) to weekly winners. If this actually takes off, maybe I?ll make a better prize or possibly keep a running total of who has won the most during a given time period for a more substantial prize. (I?m not rich)

Questions / Suggestions?

Post in the thread or PM me. If there?s a way to make this better, I want to hear about it.

Week 1 Engineering Category - Post-It Note Tower

Materials: 3 standard size (3? x 3?) Post-It notes
(Three now bold for Safeway ;) )

Goal: Build the tallest freestanding tower you can

Rules:
No other materials may be used in construction (no tape, glue, paperclips, etc.)
Yes, you may ?stick? on to the supporting surface (you can use the sticky portion to stick on to the supporting surface below? it doesn?t need to be movable)
The structure must be freestanding (The only thing it can touch is the surface it?s standing upon? you could make supports for the tower as long as they are constructed out of those 3 Post-It notes, but the only thing they support against is the surface below)

To Submit:
Along with this picture, state the height your tower achieved (in inches? if you measured in centimeters, do the conversion).
Take at least two pictures of the structure so we can see that it is freestanding and does not include any other materials.
(If your pictures are blurry, see if your camera has a macro function)
Either post your submission in this thread or (if you have a top secret design), PM or e-mail me your submission.
You can post several submissions, but only your most recent submission at the time the poll is being created will be included.

Take a picture of your structure (with ?ATOT? written somewhere) and a ruler of some kind next to it so it is clear that your stated measurement is accurate.
- This requirement eliminated

Entries:

  • The Boston Dangler - 40.5" initially reported, 43.5" as a revision
(upon review of my entry, i ask to alter the submitted height of olympus in yellow. i contend the recorded measurement of 40.5 inches was in error, due to the body of the tape measure (3 inches) not being included in the total figure.)

Week 1 Creative Category - dug777 in danger

Since I know dug777 has gotten into trouble in the past
Example 1
Example 2
Example 3
I thought I would see what other trouble he could get into.

So, provide a picture, Photochop, short story, whatever of ?dug777 in danger?.

To Submit:
Either post your submission in this thread or (if you don?t want any copycats of your creativity), PM or e-mail me your submission.
You can post several submissions, but each submission will be judged independently. Your scores will not be cumulative for all submissions. (If dug777 submits a design that gets 7 votes and I submit two designs that each get 5 points, dug777 wins).

The text ?ATOT? must be included in your submission somehow. (Just for consistency over weeks I suppose) - This requirement eliminated

Week 2 Engineering Category - Post-It Note Penny Tower (presented by The Boston Dangler)

Materials:
12 standard size (3" x 3") Post-It notes
Lots of pennies (1 more than your tower can support ;) )
If you do not have access to U.S. pennies, use a foreign equivalent (if this is an issue for you, post in this thread and we'll hopefully get a ruling from The Boston Dangler)

Goal: Build the strongest freestanding tower of at least 6 inches tall (strength determined by number of pennies supported)

Rules:
You may use twelve 3" x 3" Post-It notes to construct your structure
The structure must be 6" minimum height (no maximum height for Post-It Note structure)
From 0" to 6", there is to be a "penny exclusion zone" i.e. no pennies below the 6 inch mark.
You must provide a picture of the underside of your construction, to make sure there isn't a block of wood or something in there ;)
No other materials may be used in construction (no tape, glue, paperclips, etc.)
Yes, you may ?stick? on to the supporting surface (you can use the sticky portion to stick on to the supporting surface below? it doesn?t need to be movable)
The structure must be freestanding (The only thing it can touch is the surface it?s standing upon? you could make supports for the tower as long as they are constructed out of those 12 Post-It notes, but the only thing they support against is the surface below)

To Submit:
Along with the pictures, state the total number of pennies your tower supports in the picture.
Take at least THREE PICTURES of the structure so we can see that it is freestanding and does not include any other materials. At least one must be of the structure under the pennies so we can see what is supporting them.
(If your pictures are blurry, see if your camera has a macro function)
Either post your submission in this thread or (if you have a top secret design), PM or e-mail me your submission.
You can post several submissions, but only your most recent submission at the time the poll is being created will be included.

Week 2 Creative Challenge - AT T-shirt Design (presented by YOyoYOhowsDAjello)

As some of you know, Crono and I (along with many other AT members) have been working on the ATOT T-shirt store.

For this week's Creative Challenge, I want to see what ATOT can come up with for some new designs.

So, make a picture depicting an AT thread of your choice.

To Submit:
Either post in this thread (or e-mail / PM me) your design.
The image file must be AT LEAST 800x800 pixels in size and the design itself must take up a reasonable portion of that size (don't put the word "nef" on the shirt in small font and then make a huge empty space around it to fill up the 800x800 requirement).
Ideally, the designs would follow Crono's guidelines from the ATOT T-shirt store linked above.
(Your submission does not need to include the "shirt", just the design to go on the shirt... you might want to specify what color shirt would be used if it's not obvious from your background choice)
Provide a link to the AnandTech thread that inspired the design (thread can be from any subforum on AT)
That thread must not be your own thread (not counting timewarps, the thread you pick must be one created by someone other than you).
You can post several submissions, but each submission will be judged independently. Your scores will not be cumulative for all submissions. (If dug777 submits a design that gets 7 votes and I submit two designs that each get 5 points, dug777 wins).

For this challenge, if you win, I will work with you to create a full 3000x3000 with transparent background version of your design to be put on the ATOT T-shirt store site (if you submit a design that doesn't meet those recommended specifications Crono provided).

How about taking 3 Post-It notes home and rebuilding it? :p

(used Post-It notes of course since you wouldn't want to be accused of stealing office supplies)

If I could use my 4x3 inch post it's we have at work I'd be all over this competition... unfortunately we don't have 3x3 post its :(

Although... I could go cut an inch off of a book of them.... Hmmm

Cut away, dude ;)

(You only have to trim and inch off 3 at a time too :p )

EDIT:

Maybe I should take down my dug scene... it kind of made making lunch awkward.
