Have you thought about what the next engineering challenge is going to be?

either 2-inch high, 1 post-it note + x pennies,

or

1 matchbook tower

good challenges can be tough to think of. materials need to be cheap, universally available, and hold a great deal of parity. objectives need to be clear, easily verified, and interesting. if anyone knows of some decent projects, or if there is something written on the topic, let's hear it.

I was rethinking the penny tower and now am wondering if it would be more interesting if we made the minimum height to be more than 3 inches... That way a simple cylinder isn't possible so there will probably be more variety in the designs?

Maybe a 4" minimum tower? Or anything you desire to declare as the minimum over 3"?

Of course you get to decide everything :p

how's this?

most pennies wins, 6 inch minimum post-it note base, 12 post-it notes
detailed rules to come

i'm thinking this would be a decent challenge, and the amount of materials fosters variety.

Hey The Boston Dangler... I was just looking at your submitted pictures again.

How does not including the tape measure body affect your measurement at all? Isn't the body of the tape measure in your hand? (The 1" mark is 1" from the metal tip that's at the bottom)

Last day to submit votes, folks. I'll be posting the results and then hopefully the new challenges sometime around 1pm Central Time this afternoon. (Poll will be taken down and final vote totals will be recorded in the thread as a record).

Winners (TBD) should send me a PM requesting either an e-mail of your winning certificate or sent me an address to send a physical copy to you.

FYI unless I feel inspired today, if I'm still in the lead for the creative challenge by 1pm, I'll make week 2 creative challenge about designing a t-shirt about the AT thread of your choice. Recommended size (possibly required) will be at least 800x800 resolution.
Ideally, you'd meet the suggested requirements from Crono in the t-shirt thread
http://forums.anandtech.com/me...id=38&threadid=2254669
I'm thinking the winner of this challenge will get a certificate as well as an offer for me to create a 3000x3000 transparent background (if you want it) version scaled up to Crono's suggestion if you don't create it that size already. (Meaning if you win but created a 800x800 design that will get a pixelated from blowing it up to t-shirt size, I'll work with you to create a 3000x3000 200dpi version that should print out better). Maybe if I'm feeling generous, I'll even buy you it :p

 ....

...and that's why proper documentation and peer review are important. in light of recent developements, i'd like to retract my claim of 43.5 inches. i have reason to believe alcohol played a factor in my error.

btw, the fire was found to be caused by substandard work performed by the low-bid contractor, and definitely not arson.

i'd like to thank all of the contestants, and jello for not only organizing the event but participating in both categories. truly the bo jackson of atot!

this week's engineering challenge is:

post-it note penny tower
highest number of pennies, or foreign equivalent, supported by a post-it note base wins.

12 3-inch by 3-inch post-it notes, unlimited pennies.
the base is to be 6 inches tall at minimum, with no maximum height for post-it note material.
from 0 to 6 inches is to be a "penny exclusion zone" i.e. no pennies below the 6 inch mark.
please provide a picture of the underside of your construction, to make sure there isn't a block of wood or something in there ;)

and established rules:

No other materials may be used in construction (no tape, glue, paperclips, etc.)
Yes, you may ?stick? on to the supporting surface (you can use the sticky portion to stick on to the supporting surface below? it doesn?t need to be movable)
The structure must be freestanding (The only thing it can touch is the surface it?s standing upon? you could make supports for the tower as long as they are constructed out of those 12 Post-It notes, but the only thing they support against is the surface below)

To verify - these are still standard 3" by 3" Post-It notes?

I have a meeting at 12:30 and after I get back from that I'll be recording the votes and closing the poll.

I already conceded the Post-It tower race and sent TBD his lame certificate :p

poop lol

tbh I still thought your creative one was better than mine, but its a competition :p

how about, if someone wins 5 contests, however many weeks apart, engineering and creative combined, you send em a tshirt of their choice from the atot store :p

I might do something like that with the t-shirts.

I guess I have to see if people lose interest in a few weeks first ;)

The Boston Dangler, I took a little liberty in the Post-It Note Penny Tower Rules and Submission section. Please let me know if something doesn't look right that you want changed.

my creativity post is....

NSFW but here

I created it with photoshop and set the picture size to 1000 pix by 1000 pix but apparently it got sized down to 500x 500. if this wins, we can always change it

Can you resize it to fit the requirements?

Especially since it's the first entry, I'd like to keep to the rules as much as possible.

Engineering Post it note penny tower

zoom at 6" (we had to lift the measuring tape slightly off the table because it caused the table to wobble.)

aerial of the structure on the table

side view (once again, the tape measure was slightly lifted off the table)

post it support beam, shown to be 3"

Taking it down to count, shows only post it notes were used.

Pennies it held was.....................253 which comes out to 1.394 pounds. it could have held more, but we ran out of pennies.

This was a joint venture between me, freshgeardude and my brother, thescreensavers.

yes, 3-inch by 3-inch post-it notes. thank you for noticing my omission.
