Hi there,

As a journalist, I'm both intrigued and concerned by this entire controversy brewing over the so-called "Mohammed cartoons". I admit openly that I firmly belive in freedom of speech, and that I see nothing more dangerous than curbing it for any type of religious reasons, regardless of which religion invokes them.

For those who haven't seen them yet, the cartoons are here:

First batch
Second batch

I'd like to get as many of you to participate in this poll... I am really curious, and we can also learn something from these results. ATOTers of Muslim faith are especially welcome to post their opinions.

PLEASE KEEP THIS CIVILIZED!

and, most important:

VOTE TRUTHFULLY and SHOW YOUR REAL THOUGHTS.

What I am wondering is if today it is for example a black being mocked, will there be equal support for the newspaper? I mean in the US, religion is open to criticism or mocking for whatever reason, but race is more offlimit. And I don't want to get into why that is. but in other country or culture, maybe it is the other way around. Maybe religion is off limit.

So is it so surprising that some people feel extremely upset and feel the West is abusing the freedom of speech to insult and humiliate them?

Go away back to the troll threads you babbling twit.

Wow, a post contributed nothing and you call me a troll.

you hav proved our point ( which is that your mind is at the level of someone much younger than myself)

move on

Notice that no violence took place after a racially derogatory comic strip was published in a US newspaper...That is the point...get it??

This comic strip appears in the Dallas Morning News daily...pretty sure it is in alot of the other major papers as well...hope that fits your qualification of MAJOR newspaper...

Oh yeah, you forgot to mention Boondocks was created by Aaron McGruder who is an African-American. You think that may have something to do with it was somewhat tolorated? And even that, many newspaper won't even touch it. See wikipedia

I am still waiting for you to show me a real piece of racist comment/cartoon in a major news paper. Something like the entire black community or whatever race is being insulted will speak out against.

Quote

Because of its controversy, many newspaper publishers either relegate the strip to the op-ed section of the paper, pull more potentially controversial strips from being published, or do not publish the strip at all, tactics also similar to Doonesbury.

For all your lip flapping you still got pwned.

Now show us where the people who complained about the comic strip threatened to kill someone.

That's baloney, get me one editor in a major newspaper who will publish anything that offends a racial group and believe that he won't get fired for it. You are living in a dream world if you think any major newspaper will publish any racially offensive material in their publication.

Any if anyone do, you wanna see how many people will be outraged for it? I bet there is gonna be more people outraged by that than the few people here outraged by something that offended Muslim.

So again, I say there is double standard here.

This comic (the irony) about two black brothers gets published in about 400 newspapers in the states daily...

In one strip last May, they are called chimpanzees. That is pretty offensive, is it not???

Gee, no one got fired and no riots broke out...

The US syndicated cartoon strip The Boondocks has been suspended by a paper in Oregon after complaints about the strip?s ongoing story line involving a "self-hating" black Santa Claus character named "Unkle Ruckus." In one strip, the character referred to two black children as "chimpanzees".
The Register-Guard newspaper in Eugene, Oregon, temporarily suspended the controversial strip on Dec. 24, after receiving several calls from readers complained that the strip was racist. "My preference is to allow comics creators as much freedom as possible to express their point of view, but there are limits," managing editor Dave Baker said in his own paper. He said the paper was considering renewing the strip. Launched in 1999, The Boondocks now appears in about 400 newspapers. Drawn by by Aaron McGruder, the story line revolves around a pair of black brothers who move from the city to the suburbs. Cartoon syndication managers edited out the word "chimpanzee" for newspapers that requested it and ran an alternative comic series for others. The Register-Guard was the only paper to suspend the strip.

Thanks for proving my point.
Turn to Cartoon Network tomorrow night 🙂
Tasteless, offensive, hilarious, and thought-provoking,

rchiu why are using the united states here for this discussion?😕

You know the united states didn't and wouldn't print those caricatures, even the television news blocked them out.

I have been to many countries in europe and they make us look very conservative when it comes to respecting someone elses beliefs, race, and religion, and that is where this uproar started.

Well hey, I applaud the way US is handling this. This is the official statement from the State Department. "We all fully recognize and respect freedom of the press and expression, but it must be coupled with press responsibility. Inciting religious or ethnic hatreds in this manner is not acceptable."

This is exactly how I feel about the whole incident, and that's what I have been trying to get through people's head. And do you see Muslim world burning US embassy for this? No. European countries has been more liberal, but in this case I feel they went to far in disrespecting people's belief and religion. Sometime you gotta be diplomatic if you wanna live peacefully with the others. If you can't do that, you are part of the problem.

So we should roll over in the face of intolerant ingrates? Bah!

If you go to violence over art, you are not fit to breathe my air. It is use of violence as a pre-emptive option, rather than final, making those that choose it as repugnant as great politicians. There; have some flame bait.

I dont know what to think. On one side it is deeply offensive and the acrtoons should be appologised for. The reason i say that is simple, I dont know who here knows about the Jerry springer oppera that depicted christ as a homosexual nappy wearing baby. It wasent kind to God either. This was shown on national TV. Although it was within the rights of the people to show it, it was really not my cup of tea. How would you like your spiritual father depicted as a nappy wearing gay who cant stand up to Satan. or better yet, how would you like someone saying that about a member of your family that you love the most. My thought is that it was a wrong depiction and should have been appologised for. Noone got hurt.
This is the same as what happend to Mohammed in a way so I can understand the anger that was generated over these comics.
On the other side I think that the people of Islam are a tad too over zelous to attack others over something like this.
http://michellemalkin.com/archives/004448.htm these photos are a prime example of being a bit hypocritycal. I think that fundamentaly most Muslims are not really out to save the world and convert people to their faith, rather to irradicate other faiths and belifes.

Thanks for proving my point.

Proved what point? Do you even know what YOUR point is now? How much rioting were there due to that strip? Did you see the newspaper building getting burned? Death threats issued? This is what happens in a free society. If they believe it offends a group, or that it's not appropriate for THEIR paper, they pull it. But there are still hundreds of papers around the country running the strip.

Something like the entire black community or whatever race is being insulted will speak out against.

so now you are using racism in your favor???

Does the name Bill Cosby ring a bell??? Last year he pretty much p!ssed off most of the black community by stating his opinion on what can be done to improve some of their conditions...he used stereo types of how they talked, dressed and their priorities to show that they were not taking advantage of the opportunities before them.

This caused a tremendous amount of outgage that was all over the news...did anyone die? did anyone riot? did any builidings burn down? Did Bill even get any death threats??

This is how people handle things that upset them...they voice their opinions without threatening to behead people or burn down buildings...

BTW, Bill is an african american, just like Aaron McGruder and his Pound Cake speech was printed in all of the major papers...

But none of what was said in this post really matters to you because you are going to come up with another excuse on how this isn't what you meant...

In response, it was a stupid but jusifiable thing. I understand that we should be free to draw anything, but then, publishing something in a public venue that can only be taken by Muslims as inflamatory, can not be ethically right. I support the Danes, though they need to exercise thinking. The riots did prove the point, but don't test someone just to see how mad they can get. I bet you that more people will die now, because we have once again given those crazed redicals something to bomb people about.

so now you are comparing one person stating his opinion vs. the largest Newspaper stating something against the entire religion? You don't see that there is a difference being insulted by a nation, a group that you have always beein having conflicts with, and being insulted by someone from your own group?

You know what, just keep calling me muslim apologizer. I've been called that when I argued with people that invading Iraq was an idiotic move. Seems like these days when actually trying to figure out the real cause of the problem is not allowed, and the only thing allowed is to simplified everything by putting one religion, one group of people the cause of all the problem in the world. Well, I guess that's the extend of some people's intelligence, and that's all they are capable of understanding.
