It was an interesting patch night for me that’s for sure.

I don’t know what anyone else thought about the process itself but here was my overall impression.

Despite having downloaded 4 massive patches prior to last night Blizzard, in their INFINITE wisdom, decided to add another download just to get to the 4.0 level. I don’t know about anyone else but I was experiencing abysmal download speeds anywhere from 4 Kb a second to 40. I did everything I could to boost the download but nothing helped. It was the same on P to P or direct, I had it set NOT to throttle the download in the background, and I had no issues with my firewall. I sat at 98% complete for hours as the download slowly crept closer and closer to being done.

Then in typical Blizzard fashion we were treated to two more downloads. The one bright spot in all of this was that the new downloader really improved my download speed. I read a lot of posts from people complaining about the new downloader but I like it.

My main is a level 80 hunter who I run in a guild that’s on the last few bosses in ICC. Anyone who has a hunter knows that the changes to our class are massive in this patch and I was very anxious to see exactly how everything was going to shake out.

I finally got in game around 8:30 PM PST and got my talents set up so I could do some preliminary testing before I changed out any gems or did any re-forging. I decided the best test would be to run some missions first and see how I did, and then perhaps run a random heroic or two. But the JOY of patch night was not over for me yet, as Blizzard decided they hadn't finished messing with me.

I decided to head to the tournament grounds for some easy missions that I could compare versus pre patch. I didn't have any of my add on's loaded because I knew they would all be way out of date and might cause me some stability issues with the new patch.

On the way I stopped and killed a few Scourge Mobs and wasn’t immediately impressed with the change based on my quick talent choices, though I didn’t mind the new focus system as much as I thought I would.

I got to the tournament grounds and picked up three quests in the first tent then headed for the next one to pick up a few more. With No warning I was suddenly disconnected, and despite my best efforts I couldn't log my hunter back on. I could log on ANY of my other toons but not my hunter.

I did the standard "Delete the three WoW game folders and let the game rebuild them" Still the same result. Eventually I gave up and sent in a ticket from one of my other toons.
It was then that I noticed another one of my guild members showing up in our roster. I looked down the list to see who else was still around at this hour and to my amusement it was my hunter.
Apparently when the system booted me out it didn't register my character as having left the server. Typical patch night BS I guess and I expect that it will eventually time out and clear him off the server so I can log in with him again.

So at this point I have killed three mobs and have NO clear idea of how well the new Hunter system is going to work for me.

As I don’t PvP much I’m not worried about player class balance. I’d like to think that the Hunter PvP ability couldn’t get any worse than it was pre patch but I NEVER underestimate Blizzards ability to mess things up. Fury Warriors have any comments on that ? LOL

I was looking forward to re-forging some of my gear to add other stats, but I really don’t have any gear with odd secondary stats I can blow off. I do have a few points of hit I can take off of some items to trade for Mastery, now if I can only get back in game.

Things are going to be a mess for a while and I expect some major changes prior to Cataclysm launch. I expect to see a lot of people QQing about this that or the other thing but considering Blizzards past history I don’t expect them to make any major change of direction.

can someone explain mastery better? I've spec'd fully and mastery is grayed out. I did go train it. Does it have to do with reforging? Where do we get "points of mastery"?

Mastery will only be naturally available on Cataclysm gear and gear enhancements (gems, etc). You are able to give yourself mastery now through reforging.

Be wary though... just like all stats, they don't have the same weight for each class. For Enhancement Shamans, Mastery is your best stat after Aglity... especially since we have a lot of crit. For Retadins... it's your worst stat.

Mastery's bonus is completely dependent on your class and specialization.

Any idea what the hotfix was? They didn't include the new runestrike, which makes it incredibly difficult to tank now as a DK.

There are more than a handful of little bugs right now so i'm sure it was to resolve one of those

I ended up reforging a slight amount of hit into expertise to put me at 16. The rest of the hit was changed to dodge or parry depending on which was already on the item. So I'm at about 8% hit and 26 expertise with the SoT glyph. The only thing I can't decide is whether I should have gotten mastery over dodge/parry. I have Reckoning on my Protadin and given more blocked attacks, I could possibly have a higher Reckoning uptime. But 30% mitigation vs a dodge or parry :\.

As Ret, I was able to glyph away a bunch of my excess expertise into crit or haste, which was nice.
Yeah, I haven't even done enough research to figure out how much mastery rating per point, etc. But it's 1.25% block and crit block for each point for me I believe, so...I dunno. I'll probably throw a bunch of mastery on for now because I'm not going to be raiding, just screwing around in heroics...will be nice for rage.

I guess that depends on the type of PvP and the support a hunter gets. Also, and I wont be offended by people saying I simply suck at PvP, there is the issue of player PvP competence.:whiste::biggrin:

Also there is the fact that I have been more involved in MM hunters as opposed to my off spec which is Survival.

Everything is relative I guess but from my experience, and your mileage may vary, Hunters are not that fun to PvP with. Pre WotLK I loved PvP on my Warrior I just don’t play that character much any more.

At the moment, there is no gear with Mastery on it. But you can reforge existing gear to obtain Mastery points.

In my case: On my Warlock, for non-tier pieces I collected Spirit/Haste items because, with talents, Spirit used to be worth about 0.6 Spellpower - (i.e. 100 SPI = about 60 SP) - from Glyphed Life Tap + talented Fel Armor. Since Demonology is/was all about Spell Power and Haste, select pieces of healer cloth used to be the way to go.

The way reforging works is you can take 50% of the undesired stat and exchange it for an equivalent (50% for 50%) amount of a desired one. The rule being that you can't reforge to add something you already have. So, I couldn't drop SPI and reforge it into more Haste. The remaining choices are Crit and Mastery.

Q u o t e:Okay so I'm ignoring some of what EJ says, this will be the top DPS spec in a realistic raid environment.

http://wowtal.com/#k=RB8TVu3.a5o.warlock.-Hnonc

Priority is pretty complex actually. If you have nobody else covering these buffs, start with CoE > Shadowbolt.
Refresh Sbolt as needed.

Otherwise: Start out with:
Soulburned Soul Fire.
Soul Fire (over 80% w/o Buff)
Immolate
Bane of Doom (Bane of Havoc for cleave target)
Conflagrate
Empowered Imp Instant Soul Fire/Soulburned Soul Fire
Chaos Bolt
Corruption
Shadowflame (If you can afford to be in melee range but if using Searing Pain it will be unlikely )
Searing Pain (If under 50% and tank can take aggro)
Incinerate (If over 50% or tank can't hold aggro)

If moving, Procced Soul Fire > Conflagrate (if available) > Corruption/LT (LT if needed ) > Shadowfury > Shadowburn.

Pop Infernal for Hero.

In fights with adds, make sure to Soulburn snipe to keep your shards topped up so you can carry on with instant Soulfires.

loving the patch and all the new changes! however...all my gear (full on dps) seems to be redone with tanking in mind. all of my items now have lower strength, with much higher stamina. is this supposed to happen?

also, my pally is 60, so should i wait for 4.0.3 to level her up or just go for it now?

..if you're intending on leveling your Paladin, then I don't see any reason not to get busy with it :)

Lol yay raiding, Sounds fun!

- Mage Table, Soul Well, Summoning Stone are all bugged and causing several people to crash. This is anything that causes the "cog wheel" mouse pointer.
- Deathwhisperer: Mana pool is literally a random value between 2x and 3x the expected amount.
- Deathwhisperer: Death and Decay is extremely hard to see.
- Saurfang: Invisible mob gets entire raid in combat. If you've found you're stuck in combat, try turning on nameplates and going off to the left side. Put your pet on aggressive and it will kill it.
- Festergut: Casts Vile Gas on unlimited targets at range (might have been fixed).
- Rotface: Casts Vile Gas on unlimited targets at range.
- Putricide: Casts 25 malleable goo's, one on each player (might have been fixed).
- Blood-Queen Lana'thel: You can bite lots of people, but will always get mind-controlled.
- Dreamwalker: Going in the portal still lets you see everyone else in the raid. Orbs are not visible, but will still "trigger" if you go near where they would be.
- Lich King: Shadow Traps still explode and kill you, but they're not visible.
- Lich King: Players inside Valk'yrs cannot be targeted, making healing very difficult. Use Chain Heal, the Paladin cone heal, wild growth, and regrowth (we toggled to normal mode because our holy paladin kept getting picked up and disc priests can't heal him fast enough).
- Halion: The zones are invisible to people in the other realm, but still do damage/apply the debuff.
- Malygos: Unkillable (gets stuck at 50%).
- 30% Buff: Randomly falls off certain raid individuals.
- Water NPCs: Can attack from under the world (Gun'drak is a great example).
- Items with bonus armor aren't providing any armor. List includes things like the Blood Queen shield, Halion trinket.
- Guess what the filler spell is for destruction warlocks? Hint: it's a tank's worst nightmare
- Ret Paladin and Feral Druid damage is so low that they're liabilities. We have a Ret Paladin with a 6100gs who's now raiding on his 4800gs alt. His alts auto-attacks plus pet are doing more damage than his ret paladin.
- Flame Leviathan: Pyrite stacks don't build.

One odd thing I noticed last night while making glyphs... you can't shift-click and buy mulitple things at once anymore. I assume this is a bug, but I know I tried a few times with multiple vendors. Maybe the "isStackable" flag is broken with vendors since I assume only stackable items can be bought in bulk like that... not sure about that though.

My only issue with the launcher is that it inexplicably takes 8 seconds to actually launch the game now, when it was instant before.
