Update - Someone just pointed out that the EU site has been updated and now shows October 13th, it either means that the patch is postponed, or that it will be deployed one week later in Europe.

Patch 4.0.1 release date
We're very close to the release of Patch 4.0.1, at this point the only question is "How close?"
As far as I can tell, you can probably expect the patch on October 5th or October 12th. Ghostcrawler already suggested that the patch would be deployed right before the end of the arena season and added that "they shouldn't have a lasting impact on ratings, titles, and the like".

Additionally, the World of Warcraft Trial Website has been updated and now announces that the new streaming client will be available on October 5th, which is exactly what we've been testing on 4.0.1 PTRs. As usual, nothing is official, but it's probably close enough.

What exactly is patch 4.0.1 bringing? I'm at work and they block all gaming sites so I can't check it out right now.

(Almost) everything that won't require you to have a valid cata cd key entered for your account once cata is released.

Does that include all the major things I've heard they will be changing? Like no more ZG raids, MC, Loremaster, Drake and Achivement removals etc? Or do those things not change until Cat hits? If that's the case I have a lot less time than I thought!

nvm..

Patch 4.0.1 and 4.0.3
I'm not sure I understand what you're saying. These aren't filler patches we developed to tide players over. Patch 4.0.1 will implement nearly all systems changes necessary for Cataclysm (including class and UI changes). We've done this before every expansion to lay down the framework. Patch 4.0.3 brings about the Cataclysm, forever changing Azeroth.

This has always been the plan for Cataclysm, as we've never released an expansion quite like this one before. On the one hand, this expansion offers another increased level cap with all-new leveling and end-game content. On the other hand, this expansion is virtually rebuilding the content of the entire original game from the ground up.

Again, patches 4.0.1 and 4.0.3 are not offering filler content. These patches are to implement all of the new content and systems which do not require the purchase of Cataclysm. (Source)

x.0.x patches have always implemented new talents, new/changed abilities (except for those you need to level up to get, of course), currency exchanges, and pretty much everything except the new zones and increased level cap.

And thing like the new guild stuff should be viewable but unable to be earned points for yet if I correctly recall that portion.

The one thing I don't get is why Blizzard would start a new Arena season 1 week after Cataclysm comes out. Do they really expect people to be ready to adequately PVP by then (or even be level 85)? Seems odd... I would've probably given a few weeks in between .

Ended up finding out that most likely bad memory was indeed causing some of my WoW problems. Which tells me that the MS tool is downright terrible, since I had used it and it found no problem with my RAM. Purchased some newer and faster RAM today, since the thought of having my main machine down for a week or more while G.Skill replaces my entire RAM kit is just maddening! A 2.5 hour Memtest86 run showed that it was in good condition... but I can't say the same for my poor WoW install.

Apparently, it was destroyed enough by the hardware problems that the repair tool just told me, "Son, you better just reinstall." So, rather than install from the myriad of CDs/DVDs that make up all of WoW, I decided to try out this download-based installer. Does anyone know if I need to patch any further after I install using this thing?

Sigh, if only my external enclosure didn't die, I would've had WoW stored on it like usual :(. I'm almost afraid to run the repair tool on SC2 as it might tell me, "I hope you like installing stuff, because you're about to do it again!"

I think I might have had to DL/install some minor patches after using the installer, but no big content patches. You'd think I could remember something that happened 6 days ago better.

Ugh it slowed down to less than 300KB/s after sitting at 1.1MB/s for awhile... better just get out the install CDs at this rate :\.

EDIT:

Oh, there it goes back up again... oddly enough, I started downloading something... usually this would drop my speed, but it started going back up around that time .

you can use just the WotLK dvd to install the entire game if you want. that may speed it up some.

Speaking to a small conglomerate of various Alliance representatives, Mekkatorque pointed out that the time to strike is now. After all, Thermaplugg has eluded death for years to keep his reign over Gnomeregan; and with the fall of the Lich King, the last great threat to the citizens of Azeroth, the chance of any cataclysmic event taking place in the foreseeable future is "less than 12.7%," Mekkatorque's leading combat medical advisor Doc Cogspin purported.

Did you get the install finished?

Yep. It eventually played nice and kept around 2MB/s.

www.memtest.org Download and burn to a bootable DVD/CD

That's what I did ;). Although, I found it odd because I could never get 3.5 to work. I always had to boot up and choose 3.4, because 3.5 would go for a few seconds and my PC would just restart or it would just freeze up. Quite odd :hmm:.

Although, one thing I still find a little fishy... when I was copying the newly installed WoW from D (SSD) to F (Back-up/Temp HDD), I kept noticing those weird periods where the transfer just stopped for a good 30 seconds or so. Now, I transfer from F to my server's HDDs all the time and I've never noticed a pause, but whenever I ran WoW or SC2 from that SSD, there were always little pauses at times. Borderlands actually started exhibiting the same problem, but I ran the Steam repair and it replaced two files. Although, Borderlands exists on E (VelociRaptor HDD).

All I can say is... I hate computers :p.

That might've been a better idea .

Blizz just popsted a reminder that with the new patch comes the new raid mechanisms meaning no clearing 10 and 25 man ICC each week.

I'm guessing the loot system will stay the same for ICC and RS though instead of the new "same but less" from cata raids.
