The Police Chief of Tucson was interviewed on All Things Considered this afternoon. He gave his interpretation of "legal contact". His definition included contacting folks suspected of crimes, contacting potential witnesses to crimes, and contacting victims of crimes. In all these case, according to him, officers would be obligated to take action if they developed a reasonable suspicion of illegal status. He also stated that local police are waiting on state guidelines which may differ. The transcript of the interview is supposed to be available by tomorrow. I'll try to remember to post it here.

So, pretty much as its done already

The costs of illegal immigrants receiving social services is almost completely outweighed by the benefit they provide to the average consumer by doing jobs like berry picking for next to nothing. When that method of easy production dries up, who's it going to affect?

Like it or not, these undocumented workers that don't fall under minimum wage laws are a very large benefit to the capitalist economy you people swear by-- hence why nothing has ever been done at the federal level. Arizona is shooting itself in the foot by passing this law both by terminating this extremely easy and effective means of production AND by infringing on everyday American citizens' fourth amendment rights.

so in your view, illegal immigration is ok if you can exploit the people? i am sure illegal immigrants love the support from people like you - you can stay as long as my strawberries are picked by the exploitable.

you are a real piece of shit man.

I have been stopped, asked for ID, and frisked by cops for simply walking in a group of 3-4 people. Just because you haven't doesn't mean its never happened.

You answer your own question with your own post (the reason WHY the cop(s) did what they did):

Haha... I doubt it. This was in Sacramento where there are a lot notorious Asian gangs.

Of course, the only description that we fit was that we were Asian and walking in a group
.

Let discuss a little more. Do you remember a few years back with the DC sniper shooting? Witnesses thought they saw the shooter(s) in a white delivery van. As you recall, cops were all over white delivery vans with guns draw and everything <white/black/etc. drivers>. Why? Did cop discriminate drivers in white delivery vans or were because they fit in the profile of a crime? We can talk about whether it is good or bad police work but that is not about in this thread.

........What about all the people that abuse/take advantage of the laws by deliberately breaking them. Why should they be rewarded?

That is the main sticking sore point with us LEGAL immigrants. We busted our tails for YEARS and spent countless hours plus huge expenses to follow the laws of the land to become LEGALS and US citizens.

Yet, ILLEGALS expect the same PRIVILEGE without regard to laws, effort, time, common sense and have the nerve to DEMAND amnesty/path to citizenship.

well, i am not basing my reasons for supporting this bill based on how much strawberries are going to be because certain people can't be so easily exploited like you obviously do. and i care about the safety of my neighbors, not keen on the amount of human trafficking, or the illegals that are exploited by the coyotes once they get here and held in drop houses either. if you have to bring up anything related to how the price of fruit is going to be based on exploitable people and you are worried about it, well, says quite a lot about your character, or lack thereof. i have said numerous times something needs to be done about immigration at the fed level for quite a long time but the feds for years don't do shit.

as far as partisan, please, both sides have dropped the ball on this and many other issues over the years. not everybody is as closed minded as you w/ your partisan talking points not understanding the reality or depth of the problem at hand.

How dare you expect the illegals to follow the same rules and regulations that you went through. How dare you expect the illegals to play by the rules.

Wow, seems more lefties are comparing this immigration bill to Nazi Germany, than righties were on Obamacare...

There is a protest here in a Chicago suburb against an Arizona law - why I don't have a clue. Half the protesters are wearing SEIU jackets, and nearly every protest sign carries the SEIU logo. And one speaker at this protest kept comparing Arizona to Nazi Germany, as if anyone is going to believe his sorry union ass...

I'm all for immigration, that is what this country is all about, people coming here to make a better life for themselves.

However, we also cannot allow immigration to go unchecked, and cause it to erode away what makes America, well, America. Any one of you go immigrate to France, see how well you do getting a job with an American accent over their, knowing barely a word of French. Here in America I am tired of pressing one for English. Make sure they know our government, our history, our values.

But I know the other side is always, Americans don't know shit about our own government, history, values, why would we expect others to learn what we don't care about?

Yea, America as a country is so fucked it's not even funny anymore.

again, the seiu goons get their marching orders and off they go. i doubt they have read the bill either. isn't sharpton behind this? saying that if they don't get the outcome they want, civil disobedience will be next? is that a threat?

just idiots trying to make sound bites now. that is ok, the bill/law will stand since the only reason 1/2 if not more of these people are protesting it is just to get some news coverage for their egos, not caring about the real problems. fucking idiots.

I hear you, but there got to be a better way other than giving police a free rein stopping people and asking questions based on race. You can stop or reduce illegal immigration by strengthening border control, penalize the hell out of those who hires illegals. This is not a black and white thing, you can be anti illegal immigration while against enforcement that is clueless, brainless brute force that will only serve to harm both illegal immigrants and US citizen's rights.

The key here is not leaving illegal immigration unchecked, but to find a solution that is sensible and practical at the same time.

The Federal government has failed to protect our borders. I expect this law to be struck down as it's highly unconstitutional but this just highlights the bipartisan failure on immigration policies in DC.

Ok, and that will change as a result of the new law. All they have to do is be suspicious that you're not a citizen. And I'm sure you'll be all-too-willing to comply to their polite harassment.

Point is, why does the government have the right to harass me on a whim? It seems they're too fucking stupid to come up with a better solution to this illegal immigration "problem."

The bolded part will come back to bite you later.

"Mexico advises against traveling to Arizona"

LMAO! Looks like the law is working out perfectly.

http://minnesotaindependent.com/581...el-advisory-advises-against-travel-to-arizona

“A legislation, which opens the door to unacceptable racial discrimination, is set in motion. Mexico’s government will use everything in its power to defend the rights of Mexicans who are affected by this legislation, and we’ll spare no effort to ensure the dignity of every fellow compatriot.”

I can't understand how anyone but people who will be affected by this bill would be against it.

If you have nothing to hide, you have nothing to fear. Come in the country legally, and you'll be fine. Come in illegally, and you've broken the law and should be made to leave. Instead, we REWARD illegal immigration with amnesty and welfare (anchor babies).

thus the reason you see so many students - their parents are illegal. and fwiw, i am not saying this to be a dick, many of the kids have been interviewed by the local news and they say it proudly.

well, as everybody has been watching this unfold, dps and the sheriff have been doing their thing....i am sure a marshall friend will be on hell of overtime for the next few months...

This bill does not do this. In fact, AZ law specifially forbids this. So Im not sure how your post is relevant.

That's the angle I've been seeing in all the press. Sure it's a false claim but they keep on making it.

What outrage! Arizona made it a crime to be an illegal immigrant! Rabble!

Exactly why my wife, along with hundreds of thousands of other legal immigrants are as against illegals, if not more so, than most natural born Americans.

How is this any different than checking for warrants when you are pulled over?

What is the "probably cause" to make the officer suspect that I do have a warrant when I am pulled over?

Then again, why should I be surprised that the "progressive" plays the race card.

Why is the law unconstitutional?

It instructs the law enforcement to do what the Feds are supposed to do, but do not.
Any difference between the slaughter house raids? They collect everyone and put them in a confinement until they can show that they are legal. Most choose to take the deportation because they can not prove it and do not wish to stay confined.

How do the Feds make such a distinction when they pull people aside - racial profiling?

It's not racial profiling though. It's nationality profiling and that IS legal.

I can honestly say I have never read any of those sources in my life... at any rate..

Why should there be a law that forces one to prove their identity... Without probable cause how can anyone be fore the police demanding ID? It allows too much generality.. What counts as a reason to suspect an illegal? Is it based on race? is it based on the cop feeling like a jerk that day? What is the punishment if someone has no id? Will the police arrest them, fine them, take them home to prove who they are and waste good time?

You might want to go read the laws that are already on the books. If you are issued a DL or state ID, in most states when you got that ID you agreed to provide that ID to the police or acting state official on demand.
Try again.
