Traditional video format encodes video frames in such a way that a single frame is used as a reference frame for future/subsequent frames. So if you were to take a video and take out a single frame, you're likely to get a garbled frame.

The live photos feature sounds like it takes shots moments before and after the photo that's taken as individual images and stores them in a single file. This way, you'd get individual photos out of the "live photo" unlike a typical video file.

We need some Harry Potter-style picture frames from Apple! Motion photos! Someone really needs to make a better picture frame. OLED or color e-ink or something.

This is totally what popped in my mind during the live event. Just need cheap, disposable/recyclable solar powered newspapers with flexible e-ink displays.

I feel the iPad Pro is a real niche device. Does the average consumer seriously want a 13" tablet? I doubt it.

Plus right now at B&H I could get a 13" base model MBA for $100 more than a base model iPad Pro.

iPhone's getting heavier is not a good thing.

If your main purpose of having an Apple TV is to use AirPlay I think you are better off getting the third generation.

I do like the new iPad Mini and 3D Touch on the iPhone. Also think the gold Apple Watch sport will sell very well. I really like my Watch and can't wait for the software update next week.

Lastly, thank God we finally get a Facebook Messenger Watch app. Now it's time for a WhatsApp one.

I dunno. I'm probably inclined to take a base iPad Pro over a base MBA for the size, resolution and quality of the display. I don't enjoy coding, photo editing or anything else really serious on an 11" screen, so I don't personally see the base MBA as any more productive of a machine (for my purposes). And if I'm moving up to a 13" laptop, then I'll spend the difference and move up to a 13" Retina Macbook Pro. So strike out the 13" MBA too, imo. For these reasons, I think the MBA could get phased out entirely in favor of the iPad Pro.

Traditional video has lots of "key frames" that are basically full shots, not dependent on previous frames, but a fixed number of frames after a key frame depend on that key frame.

I doubt Live Photos have more than a few key frames (one of them would be your main shot).
The initial reports are that they are individual still frames, based off JPEG. All of them. No interframes. We shall see if this is true or not, but that's what some are claiming.

I guess that could make sense. For example, just as a very amateurish demo, you can take 3 MB JPEGs and then photoshop them down to under 1/12th of that size and still maintain reasonable JPEG quality even at the exact same resolution. With better compression methods (JPEG2000 for example), the ratios get even larger. These "low quality" JPEG or JPEG-like files would be of sufficient quality for a mini-video at reduced frame rates (eg. 15 fps), without using up too much storage space.

But of course, I'm just guessing, based off very limited information.

And the comment by some that Apple didn't choose by accident that little cute kid to demonstrate Live Photos is very appropriate. Parents of young kids are going to love this feature. My wife literally cried when she saw the demo of this feature. (And by "literally", I mean literally, not figuratively.)

The picture of that kid really sold it. None of the stuff they showed after was as powerful as the excited kid. After awhile that little bit of motion could add context to a photo that you might have forgotten. I'm not really big on taking photos of people, and prefer taking video instead. This seems like a nice additional option.

When the MBA finally dies, it will have nothing to do with the iPad Pro. It will be replaced by 12" and 14" MacBook's at more affordable prices.

iOS and OS X are two entirely different experiences. Even something as simple as having 6 tabs open in a browser while you write an email is going to be easier on a MBA than an iPad Pro.

I really don't see many 'average' consumers opting for the iPad Pro. Even if you don't need the power of OS X you'll get a more advance machine for basically the same price. The one caveat being the retina screen.

IMO, iPad Pro is a corporate workflow tablet and a content creation device for artists. And it will get some sales from consumers, but the primary consumer market will be minis and Airs.

Apple knows they needed to differentiate this product somehow. It's not enough to be just a bigger iPad, so they went quite upscale with it, with 4 GB RAM, 240 Hz touch sensitivity and high end stylus with tight integration.

They need to put OSX onto a tablet. In other words, they need their own Surface. That's what I envision when I hear "iPad Pro".

I think the iPad pro is perfect! I can finally junk my SP3 for the ipad pro! Productivity? I got Office Suite. E-Mails? No Problem. Web Browsing? Done. Printing? No problem as I have an air print enabled Printer. Stylus refined? (Sorry Microsoft, you had 3 shots to get this right, but still you fail apple's first attempt) Price is at the right point also.

The new Macbook is underpowered and overpriced garbage with no expansion ports, though. You would be better off getting another Macbook Air or even a used Macbook Pro.

The 12" MacBook Retina is actually my favourite computer Apple's line, even if it's not perfect. In fact, it's the computer I'd be asking for ever since the MacBook Air and then the Retina Pros came out.

I don't like the MacBook Air because the screen just doesn't compare, and the font sizes are wrong, and I don't like the weight of the MacBook Pro.

What I'd really like to see is a 12-13" Pro at 2.75 lbs, with a superior keyboard and trackpad to the MacBook, but even then I'd consider the MacBook at 2 lbs.

However, any heavy lifting I'd need to do (which isn't often) would be done on my 27" Core i7 iMac.

I not buying until at least Kaby Lake though.

Now is not the time to get a MacBook unless you have money to burn. In a few years it will be more affordable and have more power.

I purchased an 11" MBA for $700 new in June. By the time I'm ready to get a new laptop the MacBook will be the right price and feature the right specs.

To note, some third party keyboards have been announced for the iPad Pro. Logitech announced their CREATE keyboard, which also uses the smart contact points like Apple's keyboard does. The one advantage that I see with Logitech's unit is that it is a hardbody keyboard, so it can be used in bed or something like that.

Still debating whether I want to upgrade. In this case, it isn't one feature that gets me (e.g. iPhone 5S with TouchID), but rather a bunch of smaller features. Oh, and the bragging rights. When it comes to Apple, that's always part of the reason why you have the best one. :sneaky:

Here we go:

http://www.cultofmac.com/388474/apple-pencil-versus-wacom-cintiq/

This is a guest post by Linda Dong, a graphics expert and former designer at Apple.

A lot of hesitation (or dismissal) of the new Apple Pencil seems to stem from people’s belief that the Wacom Cintiq, currently regarded as the pinnacle of professional drawing stylus/surface design, is superior in performance and design at a similar price.

 *sigh*

Quite plainly, the Cintiq sucks in comparison. And I’ve been using them for years for industrial design sketching, UI and art.

Hell no. As a Surface Pro 3 owner with Windows 10 this is thing is balls as a tablet. It's literally Windows 10 with a tablet skin over it. Virtually no touch optimized Apps and I am frequently going into the desktop even though I don't have the Smart Cover.

People got the wrong midnight and took down the site.

Apple can probably pop the champagne bottle now, this thing is clearly going to sell like hotcakes.
