Hear, hear.

However, to backtrack a little:

apple-a9x.jpg

"2x faster storage performance"

Does this mean the iPad Pro is USB 3? If so, it's about time. That also bodes well for the iPhones.

They're talking about internal read/write performance regardless of interface. Saving video as it's recorded, saving edited video and pictures, etc.

I'll be upgrading to a Mini 4, and an Apple TV methinks.

Have been using my Mini 2 a lot lately, it's a perfect size for me. A little more performance will be great.

I meant in that the carriers will be losing profit do to losing hardware sales to Apple itself. It may not be a significant impact, only time will tell.

I don't think the carriers make much from hardware sales. They make their money on your monthly service bill. I imagine they are just as happy to have you buying your phone from Apple as long as you keep paying that monthly bill.

I'm looking at iPad Pro hands on videos and I see this giant 13 inch screen still uses the 5x4 icon grid on the home screen. The icons look like they are a mile apart. Looks so strange. Seems like Apple should do something to fit more icons on this big tablet.

I noticed that too. I think the old grid and tiny folders are pretty silly even on my "normal" sized Air 2. The tablet UI for the iPads in general is long due for some updating.

If a teardown reveals 2GB RAM I'll be getting one for sure, but 1GB makes me take the newer android phones a lot more seriously.

Speaking from an iPhone 4s with 512mb of RAM, I really don't think 1GB is enough, even with the amazing iOS optimization.

I dont think its an issue with Apple, since Amazon Instant Video isn't on the Nexus Player either.

And while I have a PS3, PS4, Xbox 360, Nexus Player, Fire TV, Roku 3, ATV3, WDTV Live, and OpenELEC htpc, I would like one box to rule them all. Well, at least all the streaming stuff. I think an ATV with an app store would do it. Everything else has a compromise to it. PS3 is too frickin loud and limited apps, PS4 has no remote and limited apps, 360 way too loud to even consider turning it on, Nexus Player no Prime Video, no NFL game pass, and in general no apps. FireTV is close, but no 5.1 for third party apps, app reliability sucks, NFL app sucks. Roku really just has a dated UI, but otherwise its the most complete. ATV3 has dated UI and missing Prime, and needs some kind of media streaming app like Plex. Its been so long I forget why I dont use the WDTV anymore.

But I can see an ATV with an app store being nearly perfect. The software on IOS is generally higher quality than on Android, and the number of ATV developers will most likely outnumber all other streaming boxes combined. And for the most part, whatever the ATV doesn't do someone else can now do via apps. Its basically an iPhone or iPad hooked up to your TV. Depending on how this all shakes out, might not even need the OpenELEC box anymore.

Apple TV does Amazon Prime if you do AirPlay from an iPad / iPhone / iPod touch with the Amazon Video app.

I will likely get a 6S and am on the fence from the iPad Pro or the Mini 4.

Wow, an interesting pair to be choosing from, as the iPad Pro and iPad mini 4 are polar opposites.

I'm curious, would you plan to use the iPad Pro in the same way and locations as the mini, or is it for different planned usage?

P.S. For those of you criticizing the Apple Pencil price, I can understand why because it is indeed high. However, it also does seem to do a lot more than regular styli, so the price is not completely outrageous for an Apple product. It seems more aimed at artists, combining with an iPad Pro to compete favourably with Wacom offerings for example.

Which also makes me wonder, did the improved functionality of Apple Pencil require re-engineering of technologies for the iPad Pro, which contributes to the iPad Pro's price? Or is this just the first gen price gouging which isn't uncommon with Apple?

EDIT:

OMFG

iPad Pro has 4 GB RAM.

I had hoped for that, but never expected it.

what the hell are live photos? isn't a live photo a video?

Its basically taking a pic that also includes a sec or 2 of video. Nothing new here as others have done it long ago. But now that apple has given it a "name" it will become super cool and popular.

On the live photos, my best guess is it takes one full 12MP shot then fills in the rest with 4K video. Either that or it's using Motion JPEG.

Guess they finally realized they needed to compete with the Surface Pro. 4GB should be quite nice on iOS. Unlike Windows 10, it's a light weight OS meaning you can use more of that RAM for some pretty cool apps.

Still think I'd prefer a full desktop OS though so I can muck about in the file system.

The closest thing you'll get to a file system in iOS is the new iCloud Drive, but... iCloud (meaning syncing and monthly fees, no other connotations).

For me that's the Xbox One. I'd like to see them make the kinect voice control more fluid, however. IF ATV's voice control is as seamless and easy as they made it appear, that's pretty awesome.

I never use Siri on my phone, but the event demo was pretty impressive. I'm surprised you dont have to use commands to manage the searches. The way the presenter refined the search was neat, but I would think there would be some way to let Siri know you are refining vs starting a new search. Maybe I didnt pick up on what it was.

Initial review suggest Siri on aTV has problems. For example if it finds files after your first search, and you give subsequent instructions on the results of that search, Siri often doesn't understand because it doesn't understand the context. It treats it as a brand new query.

I'm surprised no one is making a big deal about the variable refresh rate in the iPad Pro. I thought that was the most interesting thing with the iPad Pro, and maybe even the whole event. I'm curious what the range is...something like G-Sync where you can go super low or more limited. In any event, they'll probably use that tech in the Retina Macs.

EDIT: Looks like it simply just cuts it in half from 60 to 30 to reduce power consumption.

I hope Microsoft Remote Desktop gets updated to better support iPads.

I've been attempting to use it on my iPad Air 2 as sort of a laptop replacement for Remote Desktop along with my ThinkOutside portable Bluetooth keyboard, but the interface for this app is quirky.

It treats the iPad's screen as one giant trackpad, not as a touchscreen. So there is a mouse pointer, but if you touch somewhere on screen it just activates the mouse pointer where it was before, and doesn't make it jump to the new spot. So say if the point is on the left of the screen, and you touch the right of the screen, the pointer stays on the left of the screen. To make it go to the right of the screen, you then have to drag it the right. Just like a touchpad. Unfortunately, this is not how we usually use tablets, so it's very off-putting.

This alone would may the iPad Pro a non-starter for me for hybrid type use in the work setting. A MacBook or a Surface Pro 3 would be a better option.
