It almost doesn't matter what genre or age group a book falls into as long as its characters are fully developed, its plot is interesting and imaginative, and the world depicted in it is believable and consistent with itself. That's a decent book no matter who it's written for. The HP books are all these things.
As part of my quest to read everything Heinlein ever wrote I got into his juvenile books. Guess what? They were all pretty good, and some of them were on par with his writing for adults. I now know that a kids book can be AS good, AS entertaining, and even AS mind opening as any adult's book out there. That's not to say that all of them are, but Heinlein's are, and so are the Harry Potter books.
No, no, no, and no.
The characters in HP are all cardboard cutouts, having no depth and simply one side to them. Every action was predictable. No one ever surprised me. There is little to no character development. Everyone is pretty much stagnant throughout the series, besides bullshit kiddie relationships taht sound like they came from fanfiction and are as just as predictable. The plot, too, was derivative, and I knew what was going to happen in the last book before I ever read it. The world is full of loopholes. Rowling's magic system is improvised each novel, having no realistic subset of rules and constantly adapting and contradicting itself just to act as substandard plot devices.
Some kids books can have all those things, but HP isn't one of them.
Even if it did, it is still a child's book for a reason. As a kids book, it can't cover certain important concept deemed unsuitable for children. Also, such books lack depth and intricacy in a certain way.
For example, would a little kid really understand a work by an author like Toni Morrison? I don't think so, as it possesses certain elements common in adult literature and lacking in juvenile literature.
I agree that a good kids book can be as entertaining and absorbing as adult literature, but I don't think it can be nearly as mind opening. Either way, HP doesn't classify for this line of discussion.
