am I the only one that hasn't read a single Harry Potter book?

I'm sure I would have loved it when I was a kid. Probably would have been up there with the Xanth series. But I'm not anymore. And I don't understand how adults are reading these books & seeing the movies... if the need for fantasy is that strong, play World of Warcraft ffs.

That reminds me, most American adults read at what, a 4th-grade level? It makes a lot more sense now, thanks...

Vocabulary is not necessarily the same as subject matter.

I've never understood guys over 20 watching cartoons (not with their kids). Ironically, they are probably in a different group from those who read (anything).

Lots of stubborn bastards in here. It's entertaining, dont be emo. Try not to judge stuff if you have'n even seen or experienced it. Thats like bitching about the prez when you didnt even vote. Its douchebaggery 101.

Some of us just don't like the subject material. I got tired of all of the unlikely kid-hero stuff when I was a kid.

Classic example of reading a book by its cover.

What's all this noise about how HP is kiddie reading? Well maybe it is. It almost doesn't matter what genre or age group a book falls into as long as its characters are fully developed, its plot is interesting and imaginative, and the world depicted in it is believable and consistent with itself. That's a decent book no matter who it's written for. The HP books are all these things.

As part of my quest to read everything Heinlein ever wrote I got into his juvenile books. Guess what? They were all pretty good, and some of them were on par with his writing for adults. I now know that a kids book can be AS good, AS entertaining, and even AS mind opening as any adult's book out there. That's not to say that all of them are, but Heinlein's are, and so are the Harry Potter books.

i read up through the 5th book when I was younger and stopped. The 5th book kinda sucked, so I didn't have any inclination to continue. I've seen up through the 4th movie and they were actually kinda entertaining.

as for the books, yea i read them. i read lotr as well but i'm not sure it made a difference when watching the films, i'm just not that into fantasy genre.

An opinion I can respect as you at least know what you're talking about (even though youre not into it).

If the book isnt entertaining I recommend audio-books. Jim Dale does an awesome job with the voiceing and his Hagred is 110%. (in teh first book he did the voice before teh actor was cast and sounded exactly liek him... strange)

I read all the books. They were fun, in part because they reminded me of fantasy books I read when I was younger.

I've seen the movies and was entertained. The only book I read was the last one, and I found it pretty entertaining. I could see why people would consider them a worthwhile read.

Why do you equate reading all the books with enjoying them?

I read them all, but I can't deny series is pretty shitty. You aren't missing out on anything but braindead trash lit, OP.

as compared to what? what are you reading that is so intelligent and great? people like ot bash stuff but never give any reasons or tell us what they think is better.

Are you seriously asking me what is better than Harry Potter? Really?

I was under the assumption that everyone considered Harry Potter to be literature for youngsters, not adults. And I therefore meant that there are better books the kids could read (Pratchett, Tolkein, almost any other book with actual character development and a lack of plotholes).

For you to ask for a better book in adult literature...

Do you think Harry Potter is really that top notch?

EDIT: Harry Potter is good filler reading for a kid around 8 or so.

no, thats not what i'm asking or saying. i just want someone to explain why the bash something for once.

and while we're at it why do people on forums either read way more into stuff than is there or just make up these exaggerated ideas of what they think someone is saying? how you get from what i asked to what you posted is beyond me. this happens on every forum I've been on. somebody is always doing this to someone else.

is it this strange constant need to "pwn" everyone or is it some sort of superiority complex type of deal, small penis size or what?

If I wanted to read fantasy novels aimed at adolescents, I'd break out my Dragonlance collection...

read through all the books a few years ago, and as for the movies, yuck. 4th and 5th one are the worst.

It's called blowing off steam/having fun. Get the knot out of your panties sometime and try it.

Great books, and the movies have gotten better with time. The first movie wasn't cast with actors, just normal kids who grew into the roles. I haven't enjoyed reading as much as I did when I read the HP series and waited impatiently for each one.
I'm 34.

Indeed. I'm 34 as well and I, too, waited impatiently for each book. A wonderful series, and one of the most fascinating things was to see how JK got better as a writer through the course of the series. Can't wait to see Half-Blood Prince on the 15th! For those that care, it got a 9.5 out of 10 on CHUD as Devin claimed it was easily the best movie of the series, and one of the best movies of the year. Hell of an accomplishment if that's the case.

Do you play video games? Sports? From this post, you don't have kids. If you had kids, would you take an interest in ANYTHING they did? Or would you still be 'a grown man'??
