I was reading the paper a few days ago -like I always do- and came across this "letter to the editor" gem:

----------------------------------------
"Question of the day for Luke Air Force Base: Whom do we thank for the morning air show?

Last Wednesday, at precisely 9:11 a.m., a tight formation of four F-16 jets made a low pass over Arrowhead Mall, continuing west over Bell Road at approximately 500 feet. Imagine our good fortune!

Do the Tom Cruise-wannabes feel we need this wake-up call, or were they trying to impress the cashiers at Mervyns' early-bird special?

Any response would be appreciated. - Tom MacRae, Peoria"

-----------------------------------------
Of course I thought this shmuck was a snobbish little biatch. I love to see and hear the jets flying overhead. BTW, Luke AFB (largest F-16 training base in the world) is about 5-6 miles from the mall. But today I read another "letter to the editor" that floored me. It just about brought a tear to my eye and I can only wish to rub the jerk's face in it.
------------------------------------------

"Regarding "A wake-up call from Luke's jets" (Letters, Thursday):

On June 15, at precisely 9:12 a.m., a perfectly timed four-ship of F-16s from the 63rd Fighter Squadron at Luke Air Force Base flew over the grave of Capt Jeremy Fresques.

Capt. Fresques was an Air Force officer who was previously stationed at Luke Air Force Base and was killed in Iraq on May 30, Memorial Day.
advertisement

At 9 a.m. on June 15, his family and friends gathered at Sunland Memorial Park in Sun City to mourn the loss of a husband, son and friend.

Based on the letter writer's recount of the flyby, and because of the jet noise, I'm sure you didn't hear the 21-gun salute, the playing of taps, or my words to the widow and parents of Capt. Fresques as I gave them their son's flag on behalf of the president of the United States and all those veterans and servicemen and women who understand the sacrifices they have endured.

A four-ship flyby is a display of respect the Air Force pays to those who give their lives in defense of freedom. We are professional aviators and take our jobs seriously, and on June 15 what the letter writer witnessed was four officers lining up to pay their ultimate respects.

The letter writer asks, "Whom do we thank for the morning air show?"

The 56th Fighter Wing will call for you, and forward your thanks to the widow and parents of Capt. Fresques, and thank them for you, for it was in their honor that my pilots flew the most honorable formation of their lives.

Lt. Col. Scott Pleus
Luke Air Force Base
The writer is commander of the 63rd Fighter Squadron."

EDIT: I guess this isn't really news... shoulda posted in OT probably

Just playing Devil's advocate here, but how should the writer have known that? Military jets flying over your house at low altitude is annoying to some people, however much you might like it. The only thing he really did poorly was take such an offensive tone about it, something I'm glad Lt Col Pleus decided not too do.

Besides taking a running jump off the conclusion mat, the other thing he did poorly was take his gripe public before calling Luke AFB and asking why the jets were flying so low.

I hope the guy does the right thing and at least issues an apology, and maybe makes a nice donation to a related charity.

Well I think there's certain things you can do. One type of person will take offense and be upset that some AF jets flew by and made a loud noise noise for about 5 or 10 seconds of their precious life. They will automatically come to conclusions about "Tom Cruise wannabes" and write a sarcastic letter to the local newspaper.

Another type of person might look up and be amazed at our tax dollars at work, see the beauty of the those jets in formation, and look at this as a neat experience. They might even feel a little pride.

Personally, I think the complainer needs to learn some humility, and pull his arrogant head out of his ass. I doubt this guy has ever felt the feelings of shedding a tear at a national anthem, getting a lump in the throat during a patriotic speech, or being profoundly moved and humbled by a veteran's story. I hope his little hissy fit was a lesson: People can do without someone's cynical assumptions, especially in a situation like this.

Well, there is another type of person. The person who does all of those things your latter example does, but wonders if there is some reason they have to do it over his house, if there isn't somewhere else they could do it. All else being equal, I suspect most people would rather jets didn't fly low over their houses, even people who fit your description. So he calls the AFB and asks, finding out the answer in this case, as TLC suggested, and probably has no problem with it.

Edit: My point is that you seem to be more bothered that he minded jets flying over his house than the rude way he addressed his concern. No offense, but supporting the military doesn't mean you can't mind them flying over your house if they don't have to.

Then, there's people like me who note the formation, and continue on my daily life. Dwelling on negative things is unhealthy.

i don't see how any of that is good. I'm glad that your foolish enough to have so pride and loyalty to an abstract concept though, makes me feel better about my sanity.

wow... this thread's full of "patriotic" buddies who's shaming on the "cowardly bastard". I don't see how this verbal skirmish is "pwnage" in any sense. It's just a POed citizen who had been annoyed by jet noise far too long ( you'd think he spontaneously decided to write the letter right after that specific incident? I don't think so) and a officer informing the citizen that his conclusion was wrong. If any of you take it further than that, I think your head's in your own ass for too long. Does everyone in the world have to take trivial matter and make it a circus show now? Calm down people.

I hope his little hissy fit was a lesson: People can do without someone's cynical assumptions, especially in a situation like this.

That's the stupidest thing ever. How would that guy ever know before hand that the 4 plane fly-by was some kind of mourning? I've seen 4 plane formation on air-shows, does that mean they're mourning too? You can never ever estimate what other person knows. You should always assume that person is not informed as much as you are. Now, that's a good lesson.

Yeah, maybe so. I tend to think that if you live near one of the largest fighter training bases in the world you might get an occasional fly-over. Incidently, the complainer was at the mall when it happened, not a house.

I can understand someone wondering why they flew over. I cannot for the life of me understand why someone would get MAD about it. In a world full of trials and issues, I think it's really petty of someone to get angry at the Air Force for something like that. His attitude is pisspoor... I'd like to slap his @ss around a little bit.

Of course I live close to Luke, and I see and hear the 16s everyday. Guess I'm a bit biased... but I think you do agree this complainer appears to have a log rammed up his butt.

Blah blah, you're a huge Lib, you don't even need to post... we already know your feelings about the issue. I'm willing to bet the complainer was an anti-military also

This, in a round-about nutshell sort of way, is why the Libs are losing out. Most people still love America, and admire our military.

I have no patience for whining, cynical, negative, pessimistic dweebs who will find anything to bitch about. Guess that's why I have fewer liberal friends than ever before. What bores.

Guess our victimhood society where nothing is supposed to inconvenience us for a milisecond and lawsuits are the new sport sorta annoys me.

Let's reverse the role here. What about the AFB? Why doesn't the AFB place strict guidelines on fly-zones knowing full well that there are civilian building all around? Always view both side of issue.

Huh? Obviously you haven't met enough people then. I know plenty of poeple who would get pissed if they hear thundering jet noise. Personally, I like the noise when I can tolerate it (since I'm weapon nuts), but I can fully understand why someone would get pissed.

Nope, I think you might have a problem. Being an ass against someone who made a un-informed, albeit logical complaint makes you look more of an ass than the complainer.

Nope, I think you might have a problem. Being an ass against someone who made a un-informed, albeit logical complaint makes you look more of an ass than the complainer.

I know how loud a single F-16 is - not can be, at low altitude, and I know that if you add 3 more - it's a lot more impressive than just two.

Good for the ceremony.

Pissy Lips just needs to go chill with a cold vinegar & water.

Just playing Devil's advocate here, but how should the writer have known that? Military jets flying over your house at low altitude is annoying to some people, however much you might like it. The only thing he really did poorly was take such an offensive tone about it, something I'm glad Lt Col Pleus decided not too do.

They might even feel a little pride.
personally i would like my tax money being sepnt on something more important than flying around looking neato, if that had been the case here.

I hope his little hissy fit was a lesson: People can do without someone's cynical assumptions, especially in a situation like this.
i don't see how any of that is good. I'm glad that your foolish enough to have so pride and loyalty to an abstract concept though, makes me feel better about my sanity.

Blah blah, you're a huge Lib, you don't even need to post... we already know your feelings about the issue. I'm willing to bet the complainer was an anti-military also

This, in a round-about nutshell sort of way, is why the Libs are losing out. Most people still love America, and admire our military.

and they're all fools for it.

Whoops, look what I did! Exposing true liberal belief about America, the people, and our military... that was real hard

lol

Sigh, the guy didn't know, was annoyed, was wrong. Get over it, he probably did once he found out the reason.

Yes, I'm sure he feels the "ownage".

Then, there's people like me who note the formation, and continue on my daily life. Dwelling on negative things is unhealthy.

Correct, which is excatly what the OP is doing.

This OP is sloppy thinking. Cwjerome is extrapolating way too much from this isolated question in a newspaper and jumping to conclusions that fit his worldview. Note that jumping to conclusions is what he's criticizing the complainer for doing, yet he does the same thing. That will be all.
