In today's Arizona Republic:

-------------------------------------------------

Regarding "Flyby honoring fallen comrade" Letters, June 28):

I read with increasing embarrassment and humility the response to my unfortunate letter to The Republic concerning an Air Force flyby ("A wake-up call from Luke's jets," Letters, June 23).

I had no idea of the significance of the flyby, and would never have insulted such a fine and respectful display had I known.

I have received many calls from the fine airmen who are serving or have served at Luke, and I have attempted to explain my side and apologized for any discomfort my letter has caused.

This was simply an uninformed citizen complaining about noise.

I have been made aware in both written and verbal communications of the four-ship flyby, and my heart goes out to each and every lost serviceman and woman in this war in which we are engaged.

I have been called un-American by an unknown caller and I feel that I must address that. I served in the U.S. Navy and am a Vietnam veteran. I love my country and respect the jobs that the service organizations are doing.

Please accept my heartfelt apologies. - Tom MacRae, Peoria

--------------------------------------------

Good man... I hope he learned a lesson about sarcastically spouting off to the newspaper with little info (and something so trivial). I'll take back just about everything I said after this honorable public apology.

I hope you also learned something.

He can get his tribute anytime, anywhere, and bother people who care to apprectiate him with the noise. I wouldn't want my funeral shoved down anybody's throat just like I wouldn't want my religion shoved down anybody's throat (if I were religious).
what a pisspoor analogy.

Erm... care to elaborate? I chose that analogy because I figured just about anybody could appreciate how obnoxious it is to have those God damned Jehova's Witnessess knocking down your door. I could choose telemarketers or crazy homeless guys on the subway as well. The point is, if I want to hear your message, I'll seek you out. Nobody should be shoving any message down anybody's throat.

That said, Dart (unlike you) provided some interesting information that changes my entire perspective on the situation.

Well it's good to know the whole thing was just a knee-jerk reaction. Just wanted to make one comment, though. BBond you have no idea what you are talking about. Any flyby is coordinated with the municipality ahead of time, it's standard procedure. Do you really think we just decide where we want to buzz and as long as the base commander says ok it's cool? That's how pilots in today's military get grounded. Town hall knew about and approved the flyby, and what they did after that was up to them. If anyone is going to inform the residents, it should be them; that is not the wing commander's responsibility. Even if they had put something in the paper (are we sure they didn't?), how many people are going to catch some small blurb about a flyby. Lots of people would miss it. You can learn a lesson from Mr. MacRae: don't make ignorant assumptions and knee-jerk reactions to things you know nothing about. Unless you are just making a baseless assumption to try to make the military look bad, then maybe azazyel has something to tell you...

Pal, don't tell me about military coordination. They can't even coordinate with their allies in Iraq. Just ask Giuliana Sgrena.

Talk about left field. Look man, you are wrong about the base not telling anyone about it ahead of time. That's a fact. If you want to talk about coordination during war that's an entirely different topic, and one that neither of us is qualified to really talk about. The difference between you and I though is that I am not ignorant enough to think I know much about something when all I can do is regurgitate what I get off CNN. Good reference to an anti-American Italian Communist though, really strengthens your argument. Shows you how stupid some idiots in Iraq are though, they kidnap people who hate the "infidels" as much as they do. Neither one of us has any concept of the coordination that has to go on with something so large in scope as what's going on in the Middle East, so do the smart thing and don't act like you do.

I'm glad I could set some things straight about the flyby but I'm not going to get into a huge military debate, since everyone's got an opinion on what's going on and people far smarter than any of us debate this stuff every day and get nowhere. No matter how much you argue people simply have different viewpoints. Hose us all you want though buddy, the military serves an important purpose in today's world, even if you disagree with policies of whatever administration is in power. Take care and God bless, everyone...

Leave it up to BBond (the guy who drags our military through the mud on a day to day basis). The good news BBond is that you'll always have something to bitch about, so long as you keep your expectations of the military at an unreachable, perfectly godlike level. How convenient for you... but very sad to most rational people.

Nice of you to get rolled on and then simply divert the topic to Iraq... you're a pro.

yeh, i'll elaborate.
why did i say your analogy was pisspoor? because having jets fly over in respect for a fallen soldier is hardly shoving religion down anyone's throat. and it's hardly making you attend the guy's funeral.
we are bombarded with signs and symbols, such as the flyover, every day. the only way you can avoid everything is to become a shut-in, and have no outside communication.

the fly over was such a minor inconvenience, if any, that you can see why the man who originally complained about it in the paper sent in a followup letter in which he ate a lot of crow.
