When I was at UCLA the god damn NIMBYs in Santa Monica kept killing expansion of the purple line subway because they didn't want blacks and latinos being able to easily get to their side of town. Even today it still only goes to Westwood Blvd AFAIK. Would have killed to have even that though when I lived in the area to make the commute downtown for work so much easier.

AFAIK, public transportation has pretty much always been pretty lousy in Los Angeles (grew up there). Maybe in the first 1/2 of the 20th century it was better, but 2nd half? uh uh. Glad I don't live there now, I have heard too much about the horrible traffic.

Permafrost methane release is one of the bigguns that's going to accelerate climate change faster than we've even been doing it. It's unknown how much warmer we'll see from a significant amount of permafrost release, but it's already past the tipping point so we'll find out soon enough!
