I hope you don't wonder why insurance rates on sport bikes are so high Half the people who own them end up dead with somebody's grill as a make-shift coffin. Just because he went 180 this time without dying, doesn't mean he wouldn't in the future, and a 700 lb bike ramming into your car at 180 mph is going to hurt as much as a regular car hitting you at a fairly moderate speed. Course, it will hurt the guy on the bike more.

Insurance for bikes is cheap where I live. Friend has a Hayabusa and his insurance is $266 for a full year. I asked my insurance company what my rate would be for a GSX-R1000 and it was $346 for a full year for me. This is just liability though and not full coverage.

If you're moving fast on a bike, you can do more than enough damage to a car to cause injury to the people inside. Or the impact with the other vehicle can cause secondary and tertiary impacts that do more damage. Even on a bike, you're not the only one who can suffer from your mistakes.

actually, it is probably energy that matters more than inertia. Since the fomula for kinetic energy is a function of velocity^2, I bike going 180 or so is probably much more dangerous than a car going the speed limit.

What kind of car do you drive and what insurance company do you have? I'd kill to get $130/full coverage for a full year. I pay $530/year for just liability on my truck.

Edit - I also asked about full coverage for a 2004 350Z and it was around $1900/year for me...just to put it into perspective.

That's for my motorcycle. I pay much, much, much more for full coverage on my car. For my car, I pay more every 6 months than you pay per year for your truck. (22 year old with a 290 HP car.)
