just got back from a day of shoooping. I called compusa yesterday and reserved a drive, heh im lazy. Anyways the one in fresno seemed to have a bunch left. The best buy had some too but they were still listed as 259.

Anyways I overheard the compusa manager tell the associates, only one per customer on those, so be kind.

Anyways after compusa I went to best buy and the 20 imation 80 min cd-rs in slim line cases for 4.99 is a SMOKING deal, they got cleaned out in about 15 mins. I felt a little greedy on those and got 5.

I'm going to go burn some cd's, so I'll see you all in about 3 minutes, oh wait a sec I've got burn proof hehe ;)

Thank you all for this great deal, I swear I must have seen half of anandtech pull up at both stores! Nice going guys!

I don't know what kind of experience everyone else is having, but I for one am ecstatic I found out about this deal on Anandtech. (Now if I could only get the people in the For Sale/Trade forum to actually pay for the Windows 98 SE copies they agreed to buy!)
Anyway, I was first to the returns line at Best Buy this morning, and they price-matched like it was no problem. They didn't even call CompUSA to check stock (which is a good thing since CompUSA opened an hour earlier)!
As usual, your mileage may vary. . .

Picked mine up @ BB yesterday. Went in this AM to pricematch and turns out BB has marked their IOMegas down to $129 as well. No issue at all about the price match. $165 credit to the ol' BB credit card w/ no issues at all. Cost after tax and rebate about $22 per drive. Gotta love it!!

P.S. Went over to CompUSA to pick up the Free after Rebate goodies. Got their about 5 min after they opened and no CDRW's available. Went about my business and all of a sudden guys are carrying drives around the store. Turns out they kept the back stock until about 10:30 after all the fanatics had been thru, then brought out 10 - 15 more! Wonder if they saved some more for tomorrow?

Everything worked like a charm for me also. Thanks to
everyone on the forum I went and bought mine on Friday
night. When I went back today for the price match they
said "wow you're lucky you got one, we're sold out and
everyone wants one." :D

What a great start to the new year. :)

Happy New Year!!!

Rawdog, I don't know why you even bothered to scan something in from a different page entirely that doesn't pertain to the item involved? Might as well have scanned something in from last week's flyer...

But, this is besides the point anyway, Bestbuy had no limit before the sale and no restriction on price matching during the sale.

I am amazed that no one had a CDR drive and wanted to buy one. Or is everyone throwing there old one into the closet???

Your old ones will not sell one eslay.

Can't we just drop the "yes there is a limit, no there isn't a limit". Obviously some CompUSAs are saying that the 1 per customer limit under the HP computer applies to the whole page where others aren't. Some let you get more than one, some don't. Can't we just leave it at that.

Sheesh.. why does it really matter... either you get the deal or you don't.

My head hurts. :)

To the people posting the topic and the firmware upgrade- thanks a lot! I've been lurking here for a few days while picking out parts for my new system- good to see the forum's still up, as I last checked it a couple of years back :)

I saw the online sale, but I live pretty close to the Queens store so I figured I'd pick one up.

I got there about 10 minutes early with only about four or five people ahead of me- but by the time they opened, that'd become 25. A few people were cracking jokes about how "everyone was here for the same thing"...heh.

After a false start (a bunch of 12x4x32's that looked pretty close to the 12x10's were placed in a corner), someone found the real deal and the mad rush was on. I think most people got their drives, but even if everyone who was there did, anyone coming by in 5 minutes was probably SOL.

My drive flashed to 1.07 from 1.06 with no problems (using Win98A). I've been playing with it to see if I could get a buffer underrun on purpose; the only way I got one was by locking up the system completely. Average DAE (not max) ranges from 14x to 24x depending on the CD; the two CD-R's that came with it burned fine at 12x, and some 8x TDK's I had lying around worked well, too.

Overall, this is a great drive. Sure beats my old CDD2600 into the ground...

Schmo (nice descriptive handle), who even cares what Compusa decided to do? What matters is what Bestbuy DID do and that's offer no limit on pre-purchased drives along with their additional 10%. Just because a company has a sale doesn't mean you have to buy the product there - that's the very nature of the price matching/protection program. Why do you think they have it in the first place?

I don't want to have to keep stating these basic rules over and over! Don't force me to create a sig footnoting this mantra for every post until it sinks in! ;)

Dude, I don't know what you meant by the "nice descriptive handle" but I will look passed it....

I was not taking sides and was not putting anyone down... just trying to put an end to it.

Obviously you got a great deal and it worked for you and if others would be as persistent as you, it would have probably worked for them. Some customers service reps are less flexible than others... luckily for me... it appears that all of them are nice in my area and usually price match... no questions asked.

Well, I bought two Saturday morning at the CompUSA in City Of Industry, Ca. I made sure that they were two separate purchases. I figure I'd upgrade from my 4X Sony Spressa to a 12X. Also snagged one for a buddy who is gonna be surprised at work Tuesday (natch! He's gonna pay for the thing).
So anyways, I go back to the store this morning to pricematch. The mgr will only let me price match one since the store was only allowing one per customer. Now mind you, I have two receipts. So I disagree with the mgr but he insists on only allowing one price match. Fine, I say. So I get the price match. Then I scoot over to the Monrovia, Ca store where they price match my second receipt. I ask the girl there if I would have brought in more than one to price match, would she have done those also. Her answer, Yes!
This inspired me to call a few other local CompUSA stores. Guess what? The City Of Industry store was the only one with this ridiculous policy of price matching only one of multiple receipts.
Now this was a minor inconvenience for me. But I tell ya right now, while the City Of Industry store is closest to where I live, I won't be doing anymore shopping there. Monrovia or Long Beach, ya got my business from now on!!!

Brudha, what the hell is your problem? More than one person besides myself has posted about THEIR PARTICULAR CompUSA's imposing one per customer limits. You are the biggest ass I have ever seen on this board. Everyone is just posting their success/failure stories and trying to add to this whole deal so everyone is informed. I started reading the 500 post thread after the first reply. I am and have been following it alot longer than you have I'm sure so stop your BS right now. Fine, the asterix lines up with 32 Max. Come to my CompUSA and see if you can get multiple drives. You think that just because something is true in your particular city, store, town, etc then it's a universal. If that's the case and everything is based on you, then the world must be full of idiots. But thank goodness it's not.

Adar: Wow. I thought I was the only person left in the world using the old Phillips 2600. I figured the rest had surely died by now.

This Iomega/Plextor should be a good replacement, although it is IDE. I always said I would never buy an IDE burner, but this thing was so cheap. Also, times have changed from 6 years ago when SCSI was the only thing around.

rigmah:
I'm not *really* an Anandtecher, I just like getting very expensive parts for very little every few years :) Nice to hear about a fellow techie living nearby, though...

kcobra:
OT, but since you have one, you should know- they pretty much HAVE died by now. Check out the class action lawsuit settlement:

(which originally arose from this:)

Neat, eh? Fortunately, Plextor doesn't skimp on parts like Philips...

sygyzy, like I've stated numerous times (follow previous posts) - who cares what Compusa policy was at their stores? I and several others spelled out the steps to take in this deal early yesterday in purchasing from Bestbuy and I actually bought mine about the 10th post into this behemoth of a thread on Friday night! Don't get mad at me for your ignorance and being gullible into what Compusa decided to do to you and others.

Edit: Also, in reviewing this thread you might have been following it but have really added little value other than whining that Compusa 'did you wrong'. This is exactly why the multiple purchases should have been made at a Bestbuy before today.

Any news on why we can't change the id string of this iomega burner to a plextor? I'm sure everyone would like it to become a true plexor. Shouldn't we be able to since its the same drive?

iomega is gonna be a household name pretty soon. I think iomega needs some cash flow. I heard rumors that they aren't do very well financially. their stock price has been horrible, as all stocks are, but even before, the company was struggling to stay a float. I wonder how their customer service is.

Hey Poon I think your right on the money about Iomega trying to raise cash. I'm just wondering if we will ever see the $30.00 rebate before they go under like 3DFX.I just sold 5000 shares of 3dfx for 18 cents a share for a end of year tax loss
