Nope, extremely few who have 1 CCD, 8 core CPU need to 3x the cores, when a sensible option of 1CCD, 12 core CPUs are on the market with 1.5x cores

So I wonder how many percent of upgrades are CPU only? I’d think it’s a quite small percentage of the whole upgrade market. Among the enthusiasts on this forum it may be different, but that’s not really representative of the whole market.

So, it is bad to talk about CPU only desktop upgrades.

But you churned out 100 posts in recent months about a tiny fraction of this market, extreme high core count CPUs.

Maybe you should make up your mind.

Against 7800X3D it was 7-25% faster depending on how CPU/GPU-bound the game in question was.

7950X3D (CCD0 only) @ 5.4 GHz Vs 9800X3D @ 5.7 GHz :

1) Far Cry 6 : 312 - 375 = 20.1%
2) Far Cry 5 : 377 - 445 = 18.0
3) Far Cry New Dawn : 327 - 399 = 22.0
4) Far Cry Primal : 311 - 361 = 16.0
5) Watch Dogs Legion : 313 - 350 = 11.8
6) Assassin's Creed Origins : 287 - 364 = 26.8
7) Assassin's Creed Odyssey : 281 - 322 = 14.5
8) Riders Republic : 351 - 475 = 35.3
9) Rainbow Six Extraction : 750 - 898 = 19.7
10) Immortals Fenyx Rising : 253 - 322 = 27.2
11) Final Fantasy XIV Dawntrail Benchmark : 55018 - 63010 = 14.5

225.9%/11 = +20.5%

So yes, about 20%, but if you take the clock difference into account, about 15% ish i guess.


I've went through zen+ to zen2 to zen3, then moved to AM5. Hopefully I won't get screwed and get zen6 (and it'd have new non-skimped over IO die so membw will be better)

peopel don't buy more cores, they buy the gaming perf.

Oh... then there is far less reason for CPU only upgrade to Zen6, compared to if they would upgrade to increase core count / MT perf.

It's not extreme core counts, nor tiny market. And of those that do upgrade, most will likely do a full system upgrade.

Of the fraction that does CPU only upgrade to Zen6 anyway, those that do it to get higher core count / MT perf will get bigger improvement than those that do it to chase diminishing gaming perf improvements.

Then you need to convince both AMD and Intel of that they are wrong, since they are both going for increased core count on DT to 48T and beyond.

AMD stuff is a byproduct of being adjacent to server.
Zen7 brings back the tiny wee little 8c CCD.

It’s their top SKUs and shows their way of the future for DT.

Zen7 brings 16C CCD, which means at least 32C/64T CPUs on DT since they will not regress compared to Zen6.
