3 years since my last upgrade, intel P2160 running at 3ghz.

i5-2500K seems like the smart move now:D

may wait for z67 and 3gen SSDs

E6600 here built in summer of 2006. Almost 5 years since my last upgrade. Since then, I've only added 2gb more ram for a total of 4gb and changed out video cards.

Sooo questions,

Lets say hypothetically speaking, you bought a i7 950 and mobo around Dec 20. Would you return it back to Newegg for your $$ back -the restock fee and buy the sandybridge cpu (2500k or 2600k) instead? Or would you stay with the i7 950??

basically exactly the same here sept I started with 4GB and only just bought my new graphics card (wanted to get a 6950 before they fixed the ability to unlock them)...definitely grabbing a Sandy it's just a debate between 2500K and 2600K and also whether I grab it soonish or wait for G3 SSD's+Z67 motherboards...but I really don't want to wait too long >_<..getting the video card has made things less painful though a few of my games are still cpu bottlenecked (SC2 and Civ5 primarily) plus multitasking HD video while gaming can still be problematic depending on the game or video and that's something I do a lot so it's annoying that some of my library I can't watch while gaming cause my computer can't hack it >_<

Return it!

I'm tempted. Anyone ever deal with returns with Newegg? Just curious how painful it is, if at all. I'd probably get a 2500K so I wouldnt lose out too much.

I'd also be losing triple channel and hyper threading i suppose so I dunno.

I'm definitely due for an upgrade and I'm going to build a nice littlle, quiet, video/audio editing powerhouse around the 2600k, H67 mobo (or Z if I can hold out), Seasonic fanless power supply, and SSD.

No plans to upgrade to the SB CPU just yet. My Q6600 running at 3.2Ghz is still handling everything I need it to. I may upgrade to an SSD for my OS drive and maybe upgrade my GPU from the Nvidia GTX 260 to the 470.

i got a bunch of the i7 micocenter deals in the last year plus i have a bunch of core 2's that still do everything i need. so while id like sb, its really hard to justify. i doubt ill get it in the next six months, unless i find it selling online for $10. itll wait for higher clock speeds.

to be honesty the sandy bridge wont be much difference despite other people claiming it will.

Sandy bridge is to replace 1156 and the i5 sandy bridge arent meant to compete with the i7 1366, they simply cant

you better off holding off to the ivy bridge if you can, the current 1366 socket boards would beat the sandy bridge for video editing/audio due to the triple memory factor and other factors

Yep, sounds just like me! Q66 3.2, went to SSD 2 mo ago and GTX580 in the last month. It's old and I'm due but geesh I'm not being held back on anything right now gaming wise and regular stuff is flying with the SSD and Win7 x64! You still might see me at Microcenter Sunday though. Depends how I feel when I wake up that morning I guess cause I keep going back and fourth in my head!

SSDs have really almost elminated the need to upgrade CPU unless you play the latest games at the highest resolutions/bench/encode/crunch.

Q9550@3.4

I'd consider upgrading but I don't think I could get enough for my current board/cpu/ram to make the upgrade worth it.

Running at 5ghz would be pretttty cool though!

Yea, I'm in the same boat. I'd like to upgrade, but I'd practiclty have to give my stuff away. The only reason I could see upgrading is for SATA/USB3 and an SSD. But P35/SATA2 with and SSD is probably plenty fast enough until the next generation comes out, plus cheaper. Sounds like Tom's doesn't think SATA3 will last to long, as it's close to being saturated already and most makers are pushing USB 3 SSD's too.

I have a Core 2 Duo E7200. Running at 3.16Ghz with 4GB of RAM. I'm starting to notice the latest games not running all that well at times. But I think this will do for probably the next 2 years. Seeing as its going to require a whole new system to upgrade anywhere, I may as well wait as long as possible and see what happens over the next 2 years or so.

I find it funny that people say you don't need much of computer if you're just surfing the net, but honestly, that's the main reason I want to upgrade from my C2D. Flash is beating the hell out of my system. Gawker blogs all run flash ads and Firefox slows to a crawl depending on which ad they are running. I notice a huge amount of CPU usage and general slow down when doing flash stuff, even with Chrome which is supposed to be better.

This is a poll to see what CPU most people are currently running. I'm curious to see how many people are still happy using previous generation chips that Intel is trying to entice with their new Sandybridge processors. I have a feeling there is a HUGE base of early Core2 Duo/Quad folks out there just waiting for a GOOD reason to upgrade. Thanks in advance for participating!

E2140 overclocked 110% still going strong...
