Were they paying before? If they were paying their share before and all of a sudden stopped then you could be like they're trying to take advantage. If they were before DSL, and not after, same thing. If these are completely new roommates and they misunderstood you, good luck, you're going to have to walk the line between being an ass and understanding where they're coming from and kissing their asses in order to get them to pay...

I'm just nervous, because technically, they can refuse to pay for all the utilities and I'll be screwed. Everything's in my name, and if I don't make payment my credits fvcked.

*getting dizzy thinking about it*

<--- can't afford $800/month!!

just disconnect all the utilities tomorrow if they dont want to pay their share. good luck!

they do have the leverage. how difficult would it be to get new roomates? or would you have to leave since all three of you signed the lease?

also--i don't think utilitities should be included in rents since its variable from month-month...especially the phone bill.

Unfortunately, all 3 of our names are on the yearly lease. Unless they chose to leave voluntarily (which they wouldn't, as they love the apartment and are definitely taking full advantage of its resources), we're stuck together until September 2004.

Thank you all for the tips/advice. I'm going to print out this thread and refer to it during our meeting tonight... I really hope all of this can be resolved peacefully and fairly, as we WILL have to live with each other for the next 11 months. *sigh*

Although they can refuse to pay, they still legally must pay. You can sue them for the difference as you did specify $650 in the ad and they only paid you $600 and are therefore in breach of the original agreement. As a result the split would be 1/3rds on the rent and utilities unless they have something in writing saying otherwise.

BTW, you need to get a spine. Don't let your roomates eat your food or take advantage of you unless you are doing the same back to them. Above all stop rooming with people.

Unfortunately, they're completely new roommates who misunderstood me... I'm drafting a couple different agreements right now re: who pays what, and how much. I wish I hadn't initially offered to pay slightly more for having a bigger room, because that seems to be confusing them. I was thinking $30 or so more per month, not $150+ more per month!!

The original ad amount was $630/month (including all utilities except DSL), and they agreed to pay $20 extra to secure their spot, which would have made it $650/month. Unfortunately, that isn't written anywhere except old e-mails, which were deleted (monthly work e-mail purge, I didn't archive them). Both roommates have selectively "forgotten" about that.

I know I have to grow a spine, and will stand my ground tonight (mostly because I can't afford not to!). If I could, I'd love to live alone... unfortunately, $30k/year in LA doesn't allow for that.

geez.

this is why everything should always be split evenly.

tell them the original agreement was 650/month. there were no reductions. DSL was not included in the original rental price, so there are no grounds for them to "remove" 50 dollars a month, and even if there were, you are still paying your share of it. if they want to pay 600/month, then they're going to have to start footing the bill for utilities or give you free DSL. which you don't even use anyways.

part of this is your fault. you should have hammerd this out before they moved in and had them sign paperwork.

if you cant rach something that you all like. cancell all utilites or move out. talk to the landlord and tell them wha tis going on.

You realize how expensive it is to live in LA and go to school at ucla? A STUDIO costs like $900 a month. 2 bedroom goes for around $1700 or more. It's not cheap. And that's just rent. No college student is going to be able to afford luxury unless they're rich, or getting monetary help.

Everyone who goes to college and have roommates will have problems - it's how people deal with the problems. The worse you can do is piss off your roommates to the point where they don't care anymore.

If I were in your situation, I would just try to talk to it through first and be fair and FIRM on your stance. You could just cancel the utilities and let them re-sign under their name if worse comes to worse. You're never home anyways, like you said.

well...if they won't comply--it looks like you'll have to nazi the resources since they're all in your name.
because if it was no longer civilized--you will win.

Just tell them that when you asked them "Do you want DSL", you meant "Do you want DSL for a day". Say the utilities are in your name and thus only you can use it. Note that the $650 includes rent and THEIR utilities, not your utilities *wink*

Ignoring the DSL, they want to pay $600 and you'll pay $750. You think it ought to be $650 for each of you. If you settle on the $630 that was in the ad, that would be $630 for each of them and $690 for you. That's the deal I'd go for.

Yes, break out the add, circle the pertinent dollar amounts. Also have a Reading for Dummies book nearby. If they don't like it, tell them that you have 28 other people who would like it. If you let them walk over you now, it will be just like how your boss does that to you at work.

They originally agreed to $650/mo. That was in the ad and you didn't tell them differently.

Horrible. If you can't find people that you actually know and trust to live with you, get a studio by yourself.

At least you don't got the problem of being accused of being a power hog. I got accused of being a bandwidth hog.. problem solved, I got my own private cable modem.

<-- still looking for the sub $200/month in utilities.

Assuming you cannot come to an equitable solution, the best idea I've heard to to disconnect all utilities.

It will affect them the most since they are grad students and they have the intention of working from home. You would need to be able to get by on your cell phone and be able to eat at friends or out for a couple of days.

By doing this, you would take control of the situation back from them.
