Funny, I've seen .30-06, .270 and 7mm. What's really hilarious is that I'd consider all 3 of those rounds much more dangerous, in the hands of a skilled shooter with a scoped rifle, than any AR15 ever made. But because the AR's are black and scary, with that shoulder thingy, they're MUCH more dangerous to have around!! 🙄

I picked up a M1917 Enfield pretty much for this reason. I couldn't find .308 anywhere (it's just now starting to show back up), but pretty much every store had at least a couple boxes of .30-06. I can't find cheap bulk ammo like I can for .308, but at least being able to FIND ammo is a bonus.

Well, that, and the fact that the rifle was $160. 😉

I'm strongly considering picking up a .30-06 Remington 700 (or similar) instead of .308. I'm not sure though.
 
Every time I went into Wal-Mart checking for ammo, I was guaranteed to find 7mm, .243, .270, 30-06, and .338 win.

Which makes me want to build a an AR with a .243 upper. Next time SHTF, I can find ammo and still shoot.

AR10 lower + .243 upper? Same BCG? Seems like the only diff is the barrel, maybe a lighter buffer spring.
 
Well finally went shooting after 8 weeks of being away from my guns. Had its up and downs thats for sure! Shot the XDs and my FNX-45 and dint have issues. Even with my new load for 45. Took 20 rounds or so to get back on target but afterwards i was back to my normal shooting with them.

My 10mm RIA though...tried a new load with it and had nothing but issues. Had probably 3 feed issues and 1 just weird one in like 40 rounds. Got it home and was just racking the slide and noticed the spring makes a pretty terrible sound. Hard ot describe but lets just say it makes noise which a recoil spring shouldnt be doing. Tried taking it apart and reassembling with no luck. So not sure whats up with it. I know the reports were RIA was only supplying 14lb or 16lb springs so not sure if i damaged it shooting hotter loads or something. It had shot underwood 10mm 220 hardcast (only like 24 rounds though) just fine before. But ordered a new Wolff 20lb variable spring, which id been meaning ot a long time ago, so hopefully that fixes it.

As for the stuck case. That was just weird. 8th round (last round). 7th round ejected fine and the 8th round chambered but felt weird. So like always i stopped, dropped the mag, and tried to rack the slide. But i couldnt. It was stuck with the slide closed. Neither dad nor I could get it to rack. Counted holes on the target (7 holes) so i knew there was nothing stuck in the barrel. So after some standing around thinking of what we should do we decided to shoot it. Luckily it shot just fine and ejected the case. Case looked perfectly fine (as did all the rest, new load so i check each and every case). Never had that issue before. It shot another 8 rounds just fine after that. Not sure if thats where the spring suffered damage or what but it was weird. So heres a question for ya guys...what would you have done? Live round in the chamber and you cant rack the slick since it is stuck.


Last up was my ruger 10/22. I did some mods to it. Bolt Buffer, Extended mag release, auto bolt release, and extended charging handle. All the mods worked fine and were nice. But i seemed to have tons of ammo issues. Lots of double feeds and stove pipes. Not sure if it was the mag i was using or the mods so have to try it out more later. Also had a slame fire which startled me a bit but i knew the round was chambered so it was handled just fine.

Did play with the Vortex Strikefire and will say i am impressed with it. Was easy to sight in and was clear and bright. The green dot was nice as well. The "doubler" works fine but takes some getting used to. For the 130 i paid for it i am quite pleased! Though i will buy a new mount for it since i dont care for the one it came with (a high mount to cowitness with AR sights)

Thats kind of what we went with. Luckily we had the 6 bays to ourselves at the time so we could take ear muffs off and actually look at things and think about it. Kind of felt the same way. Its a live round in the chamber with no way we could think of to remove it from the chamber. Or more anything we could think of involved some sort of "mortaring" like you can do with an AR. But we could tell it was fully chamber and the slide was totally closed. The mortaring in an indoor range was quickly ruled out as no way to really control the muzzle. Luckily the round fired, ejected, and the slide and gun werent damaged (well other than the spring).


Ive seen lots of people recommend placing the muzzle on the edge of something (table, ect) and pushing down on the grip which should force the slide back (possibly breaking the extractor though). We tried that a bit but didnt want to put to much pressure as it wasnt budging at all. Well i tried it with just leaning on it and bouncing a bit (my large frame of 140 pounds 😛) and it didnt budge at all.

And i know it wasnt the round itself as it was freshly sized and loaded that morning before shooting. Since it was a new load each round was dropped into the barrel to check OAL and make sure they seated fine.

Just one of those weird ones i guess. Only thing i can think of is someone the spring binded just right to hold the slide stuck till the force of the firing of the shell broke whatever was holding it. I dunno im at a loss for what caused it exactly


Am going to completely strip it and clean it to see if i can find anything too so ill post back on that

I actually had an issue very similar to this when I started reloading. A few of my rounds were a little bit too long so when the gun chambered the round it pushed the bullet far enough to engage the rifling. This had 2 unwanted side effects..

1- It sometimes didn't chamber all the way, making it unshootable.
2- It would chamber but the bullet would essentially get "stuck" in the end of the chamber/rifling. This made is damn near impossible to extract, just like you are describing.

Can't say for sure that is the problem, but it is possible... :thumbsup:

haha yup, new load I always do a barrel "plunk" test. Each round chambered perfectly at 1.260" which is right out of the book anyways.
 
Like others, I managed to get some more range time in this weekend. Even got the SO to join me again. It was her 3rd time out with me. First and second times she wasn't shooting all that straight. Although the second time was better than the first time. The first time out she was lucky to hit the target 3 out of 5 shots. The second time out, she at least hit all the target, but was still hit outside the silhouette a bunch. This time she did very well. On a b27 target, she was managing to stay within the rings completely. She even shot my 9mm's this time. She has been sticking with her p238 thus far, but she tried out my T-120 and my PT111. The Taurus PT111 she didn't like. It has a bit more recoil than she liked. Complained it was hurting her hands to shoot. She did like the T-120 though. She also liked the little SR22 and put a ton of rounds down with that gun.

Speaking of that T-120. Still impressed with how awesome it is. 400 rounds last weekend and another 300 rounds this weekend. Not a hiccup. Smooth and easy shooting. The most accurate firearm I have. Well am thinking of getting a compact model for carrying and giving up the PT111 I bought for that role.
 
Sounds like its going great humble! Always fun to go shooting with a gf or so.

I got a fun new toy yesterday. I'll post pics when I get home tonight

Awesome! That would be the suppressor I'd get for my fnx-45. Still debating which trijicon rmr to get. Favoring the non powered version, but the 6.5 dot seems like it will be huge...

Did you establish a trust through an attorney for your class 3?

Haha its a long wait thats for sure. The ATF just cashed my check for my next (and probably last) suppressor last week so i still have months to go on that one.

Picked up the 9mm adapter for my Sig 226 as well. But my sights arent high enough on the Sig to see over the suppressor (which i feared). Really have to have the high sights to see over it. Though Ill try out the "shoot through suppressor" method of aiming and see how it works out before changing sights

Ive debated on the reflex sight for it but just cant make up my mind. And most are expensive. Vortex makes one for like 400, then you have the RMR , or you have the cheaper burris fastfires, but those are still 200 bucks. We will see if i ever get one or not haha

I did a trust. No attorney was used. My NFA dealer does all the paperwork and sets it all up for free with purchase. SImply a matter of telling him what i want, pay him, and sign the dotted lines.

Well you are further into the process than I am. I purchased my Osprey 45 over a month ago, and I'm on the waiting list for a Ti-Rant 9 and Osprey 9. Now once those come in, my 6 month wait with the ATF starts. I'm just hoping I'll have all 3 cans in by the end of the year. 🙁 That should be it for me for a while though.

Why buy the 9mm cans as well? The 45 will work just fine on a 9mm or even 40

Nice! You can also pay a few tens of dollars for legal software and that'll do it for ya too. Sounds like the way to go (the trust route) if you want to purchase a suppressor.

For best results, It's always best to use the same caliber suppressor as the host. I could always use a different piston for the 45, but the Osprey 9 should be a tad quieter and is shorter. Should just clear the sights too (It's going on a P229 and Glock 17). 😉 I'm also most likely going to take all three guns to the range at the same time too, and I don't want to be swapping out pistons at the range.
