Based on this review alone I wouldn't go near the Tisas.

By contrast, everything I'm reading on the Canik says it's solid out of the box. Plus it looks a million times better IMO, so I'd go with the Canik.

Plus it has a dolphin on the grip. . .And giant text warning you to read the users manual before using. . .

I don't think I would buy it. . . There are better 9mm's near that price.

Questions about .22 ammo.

I went to Academy today and they did have .22LR ammo but the guy at the counter said they were not regular .22LR but "snake shots" as in shoot out pellets (as in shotgun) and not regular bullet?

I also saw .22 short (CCI brand and it was about $8.50 per 100 rounds) and the same guy said those short .22 would not work for regular guns that use .22LR.

I am confused about .22 ammo and did not buy anything .22 today. <scratching head>

The "snake shots" are really known as "rat shot" but of course yea a snake works too...😀

22 shorts most of the time are only used in bolt action type 22 rifles... But there are some pistols that shot them as well (revolvers of course too)... Not a good buy really as most guns shoot 22LR (long rifle)... Would not buy much of anything except 22LR and high velocity at that but of course all the 22 weapons I have use this too...

And what would those be in your opinion? I was also kinda looking at the baby eagle II, but it kinda plain looking:hmm:

Also, looking for a .22 target pistol (like a Ruger Mark III). Wanting to teach the wife to shoot. Any recommendations for alternatives or where the best prices are? I cannot believe how ridiculously high the prices on simple .22 pistols have become.

Thanks ...
You might be surprised. My wife likes shooting .45! Maybe yours will laugh at puny .22 😛 And no, she wasn't raised around guns.

On another note ... walked into a local Wallyworld this weekend and was surprised to find that they had .22LR in stock.

The limit was one box per customer so I picked up a box of 100 CCI mini-mags for a little under $8. Where have all the under $0.05/round ammo gone?

I'd say look into a phoenix hp22, they have a target version woth a 5" barrel and its a cheap reliable little gun, I've had mine for 15 years and love it, have both the long and short barrels...had the mag catch wear down a few years back and mailed it to them and they rebuilt the whole damn thing and sent it back to me free of charge.

I don't know who sells the Canik other than Bud's right now, so these are pretty much your choices unless you specifically know of somewhere to get the ported Shark.

http://www.budsgunshop.com/catalog/index.php/cPath/21_1199/Handguns/CANIK

Personally I think the gun has zero need for compensation. A good full-size CZ-75 based gun in 9mm should have very little kick. While the Canick's are a lot lighter than steel CZ's, it's still a good amount of heft that makes 9mm very easy to handle. Heavy slide and low bore axis don't hurt. A steel CZ-75 or Jericho is like two and a half pounds with an unloaded mag. Kinda nuts. Let's see...a Glock 19 is pretty easy to handle, and that's 1.2lb. The alloy-framed Canik, in addition to giving you more to hold on to, is a half-pound heavier. It's a rapid-fire tack driver...no need for compensation.

And, of course, if you're willing to settle for the 'compact' models in black, they're $350 at Academy. No dumb warnings engraved on them, either.

edit: oh, the Tristars do come with shitty grips, but CZ-75 full and compact grips will fit. Hogues are like 20-30 bucks, maybe?

Well yeah, frankly I wouldn't choose either of them based on looks alone, never mind performance. If I had to choose one I'd choose the Canik.

Alright guys, opinion time...I'm going to buy a new gun and wanted something a little different and have heard great things about the Turkish guns available right now. So I've pretty much narrowed it down to these two and I'm torn on which to go with.
Canik Shark FC

<img snip>

Price difference is negligible...what say you?

My vote has to go to the Canik, which is what I own as the Tristar. Great gun for the price. Academy still has the blued tristar T-100 for $350 so it's pretty darn cheap. No shipping or FFL headaches. Just the tax on top. The Canik from Buds range in price. from $350 to almost $500. Might as well order a tristar of gunbroker for less than Buds. Of course the cheapest option is what I did. Found a local dealer that picked up a couple to sell on gunbroker. Asked him if I could drive over to see one. Drove over there, haggled a bit, and got the thing darn cheap at $300 + tax! Well that was because he accidentally quoted me the wrong price I think when I called him and he was thinking of another gun for some reason. He stayed true to his word on the price, but I would have been happy at $350 for it. He showed me the invoice and he was buying them for $294, so he made like $6 off the gun to me. So don't expect to find cheaper than $350 on these very often. Academy for their 2012 BF sale had them for $300 once though. Any way here's the links to gun broker to look for a better price than buds.

Full size T-120

Compact T-100
http://www.gunbroker.com/All/BI.aspx?Keywords=tristar+t-100

EDIT I saw this for the price of $345 with no shipping!! http://www.gunbroker.com/Auction/ViewItem.aspx?Item=378874157 for a T-120 blue.

Only problem with gunbroker is that you pay for shipping, but on average it should still be cheaper than buds. Either way try to use as cheap as possible an FFL transfer place. I got a guy around here that does them for $10.

Again the Tristar T-120 chrome I have is my favorite handgun in terms of shooting fun and accuracy.

But as one person mentioned above, just because Canik and Girsan (and whatever the parent company that makes girsan is named also is good) make good guns from Turkey, I don't think everything that comes out of Turkey is quality. Just like not everything made in America is good either just because there are quality makers like Colt and S&W.

Looks are part of why I chose them, strange that different people have different tastes, I hate the way Glocks look, and you can add that Walther to the ugly list too😛

For starters I was wanting something "different" for this gun, I've got plenty of plain old black guns, originally I wanted one of the cerakote tan or titanium Canik's, but they don't think they will be getting any more of them in.

Actually not so much...Buds has the blued T120 for $348 which is less than all but one listing on gunbroker which is all of $3 less😛 Hell they even have the T100 in chrome for $352...

And I know the porting is far from necessary, but it does give it a very distinctly different look...I'm not going to blindly trust anything from Turkey, but both of these have had decent reviews and are cheap enough that I figured I'd give one of them a try😉

Ahh, they are selling the Tristar branded versions then of the Caniks now at buds. They didn't used to. Only had Canik branded ones previously.

They are using the T-120 pictures for the T-100's though. Damn, might have to order that T-100 in chrome to go with my T-120 in chrome. Although it's not really chrome, but a duracoat finish. Still looks nice in a mat metallic way.

Yeah they don't even have a category for the Tristar brand like they do for the Canik, it's listed under "other handguns"😛

I really wanted a full size but that T100 is $100 less and quite tempting...

Tempting to me too since I have the full size one and wouldn't mind a carry version of the gun.

So I stopped by Academy a little while ago and they did have a blued T100 in the case, felt damn nice to hold and was much lighter than I thought it would be, not exactly what I would consider a carry gun though, still pretty big.

If I could get the chrome full size for under $400 I'd jump all over it, just not sure about the price now, $470 seems a little steep for it...I could reserve the black full size for $356 but that's kind of plain looking:hmm:

The compact is concealable, I didn't say it was the most concealable though. However, it is a bit easier than the T-120 🙂

I also have the p238 for when I need something easier to conceal.

I agree on jumping on the chrome T-120 if you can find it under $400. Definitely worth it. It is a damn sexy gun.

Well the chrome T120 was $372 on Buds at last sale, it's on my wish list now so I'll see what happens, my luck is usually pretty bad but who knows:awe:

And I'm hoping there's a P938 under the tree right now:sneaky:

It's not exactly what I would call a deep concealment gun, but it's not bad for the capabilities it has. Which is to say, the ability to quickly and accurately put 15 rounds of 9mm on target. I mean, I have a buddy that conceals a fullsize Jericho on occasion...you gotta ask yourself how much is 'concealed enough' for you. My state allows open carry, so it's kind of a situational discretion thing.

The Tristar grips are the biggest issue for concealment. They probably put the grip at around an inch and a half wide. VZ grips are more like 1.2-1.25. Hogues maybe even a little thinner (though you have to trim the fulls to the right length- they don't make a CZ compact version). Aluminum grips like these get it down to almost 1.1":

The Canik grips look like copies of the stock Jericho ones, which are also not very wide. The Tristar grips are like a worse version of the CZ plastics. And the CZ plastics suck. CZ's rubbers are much better, but still fat.

My gun happened to have the grips off right now, anyhow, so I figured I might as well try and give an idea of how thin it can be, depending on grip choice.

Forgive its current sorry-looking state, I am not quite done with its makeover. I originally used a lighter shade of paint for the frame, which held up very well. Then I redid it with paint that, even after baking, is dissolved by CLP. LOL. Gonna have to do that again. I also need to do a final 'brushing' on the bare parts (decided full polish was too much bling).

Side by side with it's two-tone brother, which is as thin a 9mm as you can get:

The only real issue is the chunky controls. I dunno if a 'CC-style' safety and slide release for a CZ work be compatible or not. Would wager Tanfoglio parts are, though.

CZ does make a really compact model with a shortened grip and small controls. Dunno what it's called but I like it a lot.

...just not for 550-600 bucks. Which is about what a P01 costs, also.
