Actually the biggest issue that I constantly saw with the Beretta overseas was its magazines. They gunked up with sand and would seize.

Bought a firearm for the first time today, wasn't as bad as I imagined it would be. Picked up a S&W M&P15X, Magpul RVG, 20rnd pmag, and some 5.56 ammo. Also got a pair of shooting glasses, some snap caps, and ear plugs. They had a few Colts left but I was already over budget and they were $300 more. Is there anything obvious I've forgotten to get?

Hoping to get an FNX 9/40 in the future.

More mags if you think you'll ever want them.

The rifle came with a 30rnd Pmag in the box. Right now they have a 2 mag purchase limit and are a little pricey $21ea but I may pick up two more tomorrow along with more ammo. Sadly the green 20 rnd mags are the only ones left in stock.

We had that problem in China Lake. I have a very poor opinion of berettas cuz we got beat up handmedowns and the mags were shit too. Am very glad we never got attacked. I guarantee we wouldnt be able to fight back effectively.

Pretty sure true because the .40 is more powerful than the 9 so you can use a 9 in a .40, but not a .40 in a 9 because the slide and frame of the 9 aren't strong enough to withstand the pressure of a .40 caliber round. Hopefully this makes sense.
True but dont expect the spent case to eject.

I believe there is also a pressure difference and in the .308/7.62 that difference is quite a bit, enough that it could affect the integrity of the rifle itself.

Sure, but if you put a .308 go or no go gauge into a 7.62 rifle, it should not chamber/return the battery. If you put a 5.56 go (or no go) gauge into a .223 rifle, it should not return to battery. The SAAMI head spaces are vastly different, iirc.

Well im finally back home (thank goodness) and mostly unpacked (but nowhere near cleaned up, theres crap everywhere in my house)

But got to go shooting yesterday and also had time to work on my 300 blackout.

So for the AR lovers/haters out there...

The top is a 5.56 one i built before i left...it was just a lower and parts kit...the upper was complete. The bottom is the 300 blackout. The upper isnt on (gas tube, barrel, and handguard are not actually fastened down....waiting on some grease to shot up). But iits my first (and probably only) whole AR i will have built. Pretty easy overall. I ordered the wrong stock for the 300BLK and its a "storage" one from magpul....has room for 4 AA batteries in the stock. Havent shot either of them yet....but will head to the hills soon to test them out.

Next up is the Rock Island Armory 1911 10mm.

I love this thing. Shot it and the glock 20 on usnday so go tto go back and forth and compare them. I enjoyed the RIA a lot (as in the glock very well might go up for sale soon). The trigger was nice for stock. Probably the best stock trigger i have on any of the semi's (still doesnt compare to a revolvers SA) I was actually shooting smaller groups with the RIA out of the box than the glock which i have ~100 rounds through.

my only complaint is the RIA will need a stiffer spring for sure. Even shooting more low-mid range 10mm a few times i could feel the slide coming back super faster and stopping roughly. Not smooth like the glocks. It didnt happen every round out of the RIA but a few of them the slide was sharp. I did shoot 25 rounds of Cor Bon self defense 10mm but it was kind of weak in my mind (i have some underwood 220gr hard cast now...of course it shows up a day late) for self defense 10mm. But it handled that just fine too.

Overall i am impressed! For a 600 dollar 1911 it was smooth and felt great in my hands. Granted its the first 1911 ive ever really shot my opinions might be a bit off to people like Rampant who loves his 1911's 🙂

I also shot the FNP-45 tactical for the first time. Not much to say about it. Its a large gun and felt kind of bulky...but its a 15 round 45 so what do you expect. It shot great...cant wait to suppress it.

I did find i disliked the glocks and the RIA's grips. The FNP im up in the air. Not on how they feel but just on how rought they felt. Felt like they were just tearing my hands up. I got a hogue handall cover for the glock to try out but anyone got recommendations on smoother 1911 grips?

And my last thing i got gun wise....Savage 10FCP-K with a Vortex Viper 6-20x scope
Should be fun to get htis out and see what it can do group wise...heard it can be under .75MOA with factory ammo and under .5MOA with handloads.....course ill be happy with 2MOA to start

Anyways good to be home and back in the midst of things!

Can I ask without sounding uninformed, but what's the appeal of the 1911 platform?

Its a classic design that only improves with time.
Modern models are extremely reliable. Good solid feel, handles nicely. So many people have experience with it that its easy to learn how to maintain & clean. Theres loads of accessories for it, probably more than any other handgun, and most of those accessories are interchangeable within reason. Theres pocket models as well as long barrel target guns, tactical styles, plenty of overpriced collectors specials that rich people can piss away money on, and also a certain amount of tradition & history. Many people keep them to not even shoot, they look nice in a display. Also most of them are fairly heavy, so if you miss or jam or run out of ammo you can still beat the guy to death.

Got my Gen4 G17 yesterday.

Background checks in our state, which usually take 15 minutes, took 2 hours and 45 minutes last night because of the volume of gun purchases.

I think it had more to do with some of your posts on this board being flagged.

In my state, the system for submission of background checks is electronic, but each submission has to be reviewed by an actual state employee before being approved. You can submit the background check information online and watch your progress in an electronic queue with every other submission in the state.

Pre- Sandy Hook, it typically took about 10 minutes in the queue and 5 minutes to be processed and approved by the state employee. On Christmas Eve, it took about 2 hours and 40 minutes in the queue; there were ~150 applications ahead of me when mine was submitted. I'm guessing they only had 4-5 state employees working background checks at that time.

And you can take it home immediately? I am barely going to miss having my Springfield in time for my desert trip for New Years. :/

Didnt realize that in some states a state employee ahd to approve a purchase.

Yes, no waiting period here. Some states are even faster, because their background checks are entirely electronic and can be approved as fast as they're submitted.

My state charges a $10 fee for background checks, which gun owners have long argued is purely a profit center with no actual public safety purpose.

In Indiana it's just a quick (usually) phone call and your good to go. 5 minutes or so.

Recently its been more like 1.5 hours to 2 hours here. But only since all the panic buying started.

I was lucky when i picked up my rifle and 1911....he was back and done with that before i'd finished filling out the WA state transfer paperwork. He said the guy he had in the morning it took almost two hours before he got through (guy didnt wait but still thats crazy)

I thought everyone had to have a check when buying from a store, regardless of if you a CCW or not.

Nope. In NC if you buy a long gun without a CHL the store calls for a background check. Buying a pistol without a CHL, the issuing sheriff's department does the background check before issuing a purchase permit to you, so there's no in-store check. With a CHL, a more extensive background check is done before they approve your CHL and you don't have to deal with any checks in store.

This. Just fill out the 4473, cash and carry.
