good cars are made in the corners, not in the quarters

Fact is most driving is stop and go. But the new Mustang GT has the best brakes of any stock Mustang and it has a better chassis which has much improved handing. Try driving one if you don't believe me. Is it as nimble as an RX8? Probably not but the power more than makes up for its weight disadvantage. I guess if you were going to autocross the car the RX8 would be a better choice. Otherwise, the Mustang still wins.

'stang does fine too in the auto cross....currently in 1st in this year's Gran-Am series ;) - they are using a 3-link rear/live axle setup in the race version. Different shocks and coil over springs.

mid to lower twenties. It'll take a while for GT's to come down, especially with all of the hype around them. You can take that to the bank.

Yeah, best bet is to wait...with the shortages of GT's...in some areas, I've seen quite a few stealerships selling them used in the low 30's....that's retarded! ...that's for the coupe and not the 'vert even!

Try to get a Ford X-Plan pin...shouldn't be to hard to get, employees are getting bonuses for giving them out. Just go to a mustang forum and ask for one. The best thing is you don't have to use it to buy the 'stang, you can get the RX-8 with it too, since Mazda is under the Ford employee plan program. You could probably buy a RX-8 off the lot with the X-plan, but if you want the Mustang, you'll have to order an '06....very few dealerships
are letting them go off the lot at X-Plan prices.

I kind of like the new Mustang, but I really like the RX-8, and I really hate convertables of any sort. So a pretty easy choice ;)

I am just curious. Has anyone in this thread ever looked at their engine oil level, saw that it was low, an then thought, "I guess I'll just squirt some toothpase in there"?

Woah, Im not familiar with what this x-plan is? Is that something similar to the employee discount that Ford offers on some vehicles ? (Not the Mustans though :( )

THe Mustang is better than the RX8 in pretty much every important way.

THe RX8 is a failure as a performance car, IMO. Designed to beat the 350z and built to lose to the v6 Accord.

Mustang no question. RX8 is a slow overpriced POS. It's amazing what total disappointments the 350Z and the RX8 have turned out to be.

The only Mustangs that HumblePie has been "dusting" are those driven by people who aren't street racing tools like himself. Just because you pull alongside some guy in a fast car on the freeway, rev it few times, and leave him does not mean that he actually was racing you, that he even wanted to, and certainly not that you "dusted" him simply because he didn't race. I hate that sh!t. Take it to the track, tool. :frown:

LOL. Probably the first time we've ever agreed in a car thread, Nebor.

I like the new 'stang. It looks good. It sounds good. It even goes pretty fast. They're good off the line and not bad at speed. They've got better brakes than ever, and they're winning competitions all over the world.

Unfortunately, Mustang\F-body drivers remain the same. I ran against a new GT automatic (black, and sexy lookin') a few weeks ago in my Volvo from 30-90mph (he was passing me quickly, so I thought I'd see if I could keep up) and put about a car and a half on him. At the next light he rolls down his window and screams "Fvckin' pussy!"

Anyway, I'd drive one if someone gave it to me. :)

I haven't gotten a crack at driving a Mustang GT yet, whereas I have driven the RX-8 - and I'm a bit of a Mazda fanboi - but I'll just throw my opinion in here anyway.

The RX-8 was an absolute joy to get behind the wheel of. The shifter was perfectly placed and easy to use, the dash gives you an in-your-face look at your revs, the steering was light and responsive, the rotary exhaust note was a great noise - it felt like a real driver's car all around. Not tiring to drive either, like a lot of sports cars are - when you're just crusing, your car settles down with you. Yeah, its lacks the low-end torque that makes a good drag car - hence the high 1/4 times - but with a rotary, it really just doesn't matter. It felt right at home between 3k and 5k. and after you pass 6k, your car goes into warp-drive all the way to redline. The gearing was perfect for those quick double-downshifts too - I know you can downshift in any car for a quick round of acceleration, but this was waaaay different - the engine in that thing just loves to rev, its a completely different feeling to drive. Not to mention, you can barrel your way through corners and stay planted, the brakes would stop you on a dime... it just felt like what a lightweight, RWD sports coupe should be. I've driven quite a few different vehicles, including my dad's SL500 (his mid-life crisis car :p ), and I have never had as much fun behind the wheel as with the RX-8.

The Mustang GT does what it does well - putting down 1/4 miles. But its a very heavy car, and that's never good for handling - and that's before you've even taken the live axle into consideration. Its not as well balanced at the RX-8 either (one of the advantages of the rotary was a smaller footprint than even a 4-cylinder engine, whereas the Mustang had a huge V8 to fit in there). The race-prepared ones have done well, no doubt about it, but I haven't seen a stock GT hold up to the competition on the track/autocross, and previous Mustang generations turned in some of the sloppiest autocrossing laps of any RWD platform.

I suppose its just a matter of your driving style - whether you like the back-in-your-seat punch or the going-around-a-corner-way-too-fast thrill. Not that Mustang handling is nearly as bad as the hype (it will still wipe the floor with anything FWD) nor is the RX-8 acceleration awful either (0-60 in 6 seconds or mid-14 quarters isn't bad at all).

Anyway, I'll get off my soap box now.

Edit: Oh yeah, and while the interiors of both looked great in photos and brochures, they both looked cheap in person. :p They could stand to learn something from the Germans there.

Yes..the X-Plan is the Ford Employee Friends and Neighbor plan...there is no restriction on getting a new Mustang - that's how I got mine. See here :

How much off would you expect to get on a standard GT?

I think he was referring to price, yeah. :p

Some of the lower mileage ones are still going for around $20k... quite a bit for a 10-15 year-old (or more) car.

RX-8. Love the styling, love the four doors, love the wankle motor, love the big enough for adult-back seats, (i'm sure I would) love the handling.

Black RX-8 is my "reachable" dream car.

If the RX-8 had a decent engine, I'd take it. However, the rotary in it is a joke, so I'd have to go for the GT.
