M$ is dumb. Instead of making a more expensive console, they should make a cheaper one and then optimize the hell out of software because they are a SOFTWARE company. How stupid can they be?
See the whole point of PC has been "bragging rights"

MS software is a complement on top of that

& if you look at it, valve's emulation was faster than windows native, lol

LOL, you can only optimize software so much.
They already have DirectX and thus the requisite low level knowledge of the hardware. The next step would be designing an engine that's better than Unreal. It benefits their partners and it automatically makes development on their platform an experience that developers look forward to. They could have different branches of their engine, like a branch for RPGs, a branch for sports titles, a branch for FPS games, a branch for racing games etc. They have so many studios with competent technical people. If anyone can do it, it's them.

From the horse's mouth:

Microsoft is working on next gen Xbox console(s)

The announcement of the ROG Xbox Allys and Xbox’s partnership with Asus also sparked some confusion over whether Xbox was out of the in-house-made console game. Bond confirms the Xbox team is still hard at work on its next-gen consoles, the follow-ups to the Xbox Series S and X, and there’s even the possibility of internally made handhelds.
“We are 100% looking at making things in the future,” Bond said. “We have our next-gen hardware in development. We’ve been looking at prototyping, designing. We have a partnership we’ve announced with AMD around it, so that is coming. What we saw here was an opportunity to innovate in a new way and to bring gamers another choice, in addition to our next-gen hardware. We are always listening to what players and creators want. When there is demand for innovation, we’re going to build it.”

Kepler estimates $1200

My guess — whatever the price of a 2027 NUC with a 5070 ti or 5070 ti super but slightly cheaper than that

Vote for your prediction here

Kepler says $1200
Adroc says $600

Assuming performance is around a 5070 ti super, & launching in H1 2027, what do you think the price will be

Our next gen console is going to be a A very premium, very high end, curated experience.

Nah, Satya and Amy Hood are killing Xbox with their 30% profit margin mandate:

Amazon, another software tech giant, tried to make an engine better than Unreal. It was called Lumberyard, it sucked, and they offloaded it into the Linux Foundation to get out of maintaining it.

Building a world class game engine is hard.

Not to mention they already own multiple engines, Forzatech, Blam (halo's engine which they have abandoned for Unreal 5), Idtech engine...

Unfortunately whatever the next Xbox console will be is the first console in my life (turn 44 in November) that I literally have zero interest in. I am wishing I didn't cave to FOMO with the XSX at launch. I literally have not bought 1 game for XSX since it came out. The only 3 games I bought "for" it were X1 games that I got before it came out - Gears 5, Halo 6, and Doom Eternal. Gears 5 was great aside from the open world crap, I didn't really like Doom, and Halo 6 is still sealed.

Now that Gears is going to be on Playstation console I can just get it for that, if/when the new one ever comes out.

I do use my XSX though for watching stuff. I use it for Amazon Prime and XBMC. So I guess there is that.

I loaded up 2+ years of XBL to get my account with 3 years loaded on it, and converted all that time to GPU for $1 back when they were running that promotion. That time runs out in March 2026. While it was nice to play a few games here and there, I used it enough to justify what I paid for it (less than $10 per month), but at $30 per month they've lost me as a source of revenue. However, I don't regret my XSX purchase, as I had a large catalog of purchased games from XB, XB360, and XB1, which all load and play much better on XSX. I am a big fan of Forza and Gears, but since those aren't exclusives anymore, I'll get them on PC going forward. Speaking of PC, I do like the play anywhere feature for purchased games, so I'll likely keep getting Forza and Gears games on XBox as long as they keep that feature, but I'm not willing to pay twice for PC and XBox copies of a game. Finally, I hope the rumors are true and they don't paywall cloud backups for game save files or Online multiplayer. If they do either of those things, I'm completely out of the XBox ecosystem.

For similar reasons, I'm likely out of the Playstation ecosystem. I'm not willing to keep a PSN subscription just for cloud game save file backups, and I'm unwilling to pay for Online multiplayer too. There are some games I like to play from the couch Online, mainly racing games, but I'll invest in fiber HDMI from my PC before I'll pay for Online multiplayer now that the exclusives aren't exclusive to each platform (for the most part) anymore.

Edit: At the end of the day, PC storefronts and Nintendo have gotten and will continue to get most of my gaming dollars. The XSX and PS5 are great from a quality of life standpoint for my catalog of games that I've amassed over the years, but I've probably bought about 5-10 games on each platform, and pretty much only buy at a deep discount at that.

You're assuming her, or even Phil, have any meaningful say in Xbox's future.

The Xbox division spent the last 5 years burning money at an unprecedented rate while continuously losing ground to Sony. And it happened due to Phil & friends' sheer incompetence at running the studios they kept buying.

The result of this was Microsoft's CEO and CTO running the division while Sarah Bond and Phil Spencer become little more than inconsequential talking heads.

Valve just built the Xbox that Microsoft is dreaming of

Microsoft and Valve are both trying to attract similar audiences, gamers that are intrigued by PC gaming but want a simplified console-like experience, or those who are already PC gamers and want a reliable living room option that plays all the games they’ve already purchased.

The challenge for Microsoft is that Valve has already perfected SteamOS into a controller-friendly operating system, with a storefront that dominates PC gaming. All the pieces are ready to go for a Steam console, while Microsoft is building out its next-gen Xbox with a combination of Windows and Xbox and without being locked to a single store. The next Xbox now looks set to embrace rival stores like Steam to entice people in, but Microsoft still faces a massive hurdle of convincing people to actually buy games in its own PC store instead of just buying them on Steam.

Microsoft will undoubtedly lean on its impressive Xbox cloud saves and Xbox Play Anywhere support as parts of its strength to battle Valve’s Steam Machine, but with SteamOS now available across consoles and handhelds it diminishes Microsoft’s cross-device effort. PC Game Pass is still exclusive to Windows, though, so Microsoft’s subscription service will play a big role in helping its next-gen hardware stand apart. Microsoft also has the huge advantage of games like Fortnite, Valorant, Battlefield 6, and other multiplayer titles working seamlessly on Xbox, whereas they don’t run on SteamOS due to their complex anti-cheat systems.

Interesting and in some ways Steam Machine is XSS 2.0. Mostly that anemic 8GB of VRAM. Def no good for 4K upscaled RT graphics as Valve boasts.

Reasonable to expect launch alongside Steam Next Fest in Feb-Mar 2026?

The Xbox Ally and Xbox Ally X are a glimpse into Microsoft's plans for the next evolution of the Xbox ecosystem. The next Xbox will use full Windows, leveraging the Xbox Ally's Full Screen Experience and Xbox Game Bar as the primary way to interact with the system. Much like the Xbox Ally, Microsoft will also open up the Xbox ecosystem to other OEMs who want to create their own "Xbox" devices, similar to what Steam is doing with Steam OS and the new Steam Machine.

To make the experience truly console-like, Microsoft's Windows and Xbox teams are working more closely than ever before, collaborating towards making the Windows environment more controller-friendly, with boosted multi-tasking and experiences more tailored for living room use.
