Wow. I can't even understand what ATI is trying to do with Crossfire these days, it seems like they don't really want to sell any?

I suppose they did say in that interview it was too small a market to integrate the circuitry into their GPUs, so maybe they just DON'T care?

Love my SLI rigs, glad to be part of an "inconsequential" market.

You can add another if you want to pwn them?

So the fact that a 256MB version of the XT Crossfire is being released means that a 512MB version will not be released? Umm, no. Only in Rollo's little world.

There will be 256MB and 512MB XT Crossfire editions. Nuff said, /thread

Could it be that the 256MB crossfire edition boards are for matching with the 256MB X1800XT boards?

Makes sense to me, you'll probably see 512MB crossfire edition boards too...where does it say anywhere that they will be 256MB only?

Anyone want to place bets on what Rollo's next anti-ATI thread is going to be about? He's really on a roll today.

According to the Beyond3d thread (and posted by a bit-tech editor BTW) the Crossfire cards won't arrive until the end of November.

How are all the people who purchase a 512mb X1800XT between now and then going to feel when they try to go Backfire and either can't or they can only use 256mb of their 512mb card?

Why wouldn't theey get the 512 MB version if they have the 512 MB card?

There's no 512MB version announced yet?

True enough... if I was on PCI-E. I'm still on AGP, and socket 754 to boot!

Anyways, back on topic, ATI has been a complete disaster as of late. It takes them SIX MONTHS to come out with a competitor to the 7800GTX, and they need twice the RAM to do it. I'm thinking that if the 512MB version of the 7800GTX will beat out the X1800XT, and conversely the 256MB version of the X1800XT loses to the 256MB 7800GTX, ATI will be up the river yet again.

As for CrossFire... what a mess.

Read the beyond3d thread - there are no known plans for a 512mb X1800XT crossfire master card.

Oh, and I have a nice hat I'll gladly eat if it turns out that you can't SLI nVidia's upcoming 512mb graphics cards...

the name already in use was "MISS-fire" :p
["backfire" is a good thing in firefighting terms] ;)

and why should ati consider it a "disaster" . . . what IS the percentage of SLI users compared to single GPU? . . . 1/10th of 1% . . . maybe?

nVidia has been working on SLI for YEARS . . . it's taken ATI a year to release a product . . . probably another 6 months to catch up.

And there WILL be 512 MB versions of X-fire . . . patience.

it's only a "disaster" to Nvidia fans . . .

Because Tim says"I've heard nothing about a 512MB CrossFire Edition card at the moment." and Rollo has it in his thread title....seems a bit of a reach to me, I'm confident there will be a 512MB Crossfire Edition X1800XT.

Well it's a "disaster" because they "released" missfire about what, 6 months ago? Since then nothing.. still nothing.. and more nothing to come I'm sure. It's also a disaster for ATI because they clearly are not at the top of the heap for graphics anymore. A (just now released) X1800XT will keep up with a 7800GTX, but has no chance against 7800GTX SLI. Or 7800GT SLI. And probably just keeps up with last generation's 6800GT SLI (not sure about that one though).

It doesn't matter that only 1/10th of 1% have SLI. That's like saying that since only 1/10th of 1% of people have an AMD64 FX-57, it shouldn't count as being superior to Intel.

And finally.. I'm not an nVidia fan. I got my 6800GT because I got a good price for it, it overclocks well, and beats the a$$ off of ATI in Doom3 while keeping up (at least) in all other games. Before this card I had a 9700Pro, which in its time beat the a$$ of of anything nVidia had to offer... I just buy whatever card is in my opinion the best for my needs. EDIT: typo.

Are you saying that as an ATI beta tester with knowledge of it, or just a guess? If you're stating it on behalf of ATI, I'll edit?

Crossfire and sli are a method of selling two high end cards to the same person, in that respect they are a great idea. But they make up such a small part of the market I doubt either company will even break even on the R&D costs. So I'm not at all suprised that ATI seems to have it on the back burner.

One article. One source. Only an idiot would believe there won't be 512mb version. The sad thing is that the article is talking about a Sapphire ATI cards and not even ATI's own. OMG, ATI won't even market their own Crossfire Edition cards, start a new thread now!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Are you saying that Crossfire X1800XT is limited to 256 MB on behalf of ATI? or are you just throwing it out there because of a "post" on another forum, and it sounds like another way of pointing to more so called "ATI failures" in your never ending quest to leave "no stone unturned" to make you feel better about your own beloved SLI and Nvidia. LOL.

Oh, I don't doubt that there will be a 512mb master card - eventually, however, it hasn't been announced yet, and there really isn't that much time after November to usefully launch it if R580 will apear by next May at the latest (who will be interested then?)

The reason I call it backfire is because of the nvnews cartoon about crossfire 1.0 - unbelievable to me that they would also stuff up 2.0.

Has ATI announced any X1000 Crossfire cards with specs yet?
