or was it always this way (and i was just too ignorant to notice)?

*EDIT* for the record, I drive stick and prefer it over auto, but I come across a LOT of people who want a stickshift or buy stickshifts and don't even know how to drive one...

Now? The number of MTs have gone way down I'm sure since ATs have been designed to offer all the same benefits as MTs do..

As has already been stated, car enthusiasts have always been fans of manual transmissions.

You're just late to the party.

Depends on how you define benefits.

faster shifts, smoother shifts, easier in the city, easier to get a DD if you drive an Auto.

Mostly MPG in my eyes.

They're typically only 1mpg difference nowadays.

depends on the vehicle. a stick in a family car? naa not worht it. But stick in a sporty car? heck yeah

You need it with tiny, one lung (sometimes helped along with forced induction), high revving, low torque engines.

I had a 400ci GTO with a 4spd, and loathed shifting all the time. Generally shifted from first to fourth as often as possible. That car would have been just fine with a 3spd Turbo-Hydromatic. That's the last manual I bought, and it's been decades since.

Nice car man. Nice car.

Everyone drives a manul in England. I only have friend that drives an auto and that is only because he got a good deal on the car 😛

I've always had an automatic. I want to try stick next so I'm hoping I will be a fast learner. I don't know the first thing about driving a stick. All I know is that you're suppose to hit the clutch when changing gears and not to red line it in every shift change.

When coming to a complete stop, you can just brake it, release clutch, and switch to gear one, right? Hah, im screwed.

"A manual is more fun to drive."
" It's always been that way. Drivers drive a manual. More control. "
" depends on the vehicle. a stick in a family car? naa not worht it. But stick in a sporty car? heck yeah "
"Enthusiasts have always been fans of manual tranmissions. "
" I like it caues on older vehicles they seem to be less prone to problems. "

All of the above 😉 ?
