I have never owned an automatic transmission car, and I never will!! And yes I drive to work in horrible LA traffic every day and night, and I have never wanted to get an automatic. Depressing a clutch pedal and shifting is not very hard to do.

Just more fun. No real advantages other than that in my opinion, in modern cars.

In addition to what others have mentioned, more engine braking = brake pads/shoes last much longer. Of course, if you're not good with a standard, that means you wear out the clutch sooner.

*EDIT* for the record, I drive stick and prefer it over auto, but I come across a LOT of people who want a stickshift or buy stickshifts and don't even know how to drive one...

I have not seen a surge in the interest in driving a manual transmission.

Loaned it to another friend to drive around while waiting 1/2 hour for me to get off work. He came back with a ticket, but said it was worth it...

I've driven both and I prefer automatic for general driving. A sports car is a whole different thing though. They're suppose to be fun to drive, and a manual just makes it so much better.

Very nice car. Most young people should have a GTO.

I've only driven automatics and don't have much of a desire to own/learn a stick. I definitely am really into cars but don't drive them for "fun." I think a manual would just be a pain to me.

I have driven stick since my first car. I however will be purchasing a bigger safer car and am wondering how much I will miss it.

That wears off very quickly if your not driving a sports car and having to be stuck in traffic every day.

Get a decent sized engine (V8), and you won't miss it. Nothing like being able to jump effortlessly into traffic without winding it out 90% of the time.

Automatic FTW, it's so easy man. :p

I want to be able to eat/drink coffee and only use 1 leg while I drive. ;)

I still like having a manual transmission vehical, but now that I'm stuck commuting in rush hour every day, I certainly wouldn't complain about having an automatic.

Although being able to baby the sucker and make it get 20 - 26mpg instead of the rated 18-22 rocks the kashba. I don't imagine the milage on the 4 speed auto would be anywhere close to that. (95 Mitsu Mighty Max)

Just switched to a manual tranny car a few months back, Mazda3, and while it was scary at first, it's becoming second nature now.
Basically, if you want to get from A to B, get an auto. It will be smoother and more relaxing, and you have an arm free for yapping on the phone or doing whatever. If you want to drive, get a manual. You will be doing the driving, not a computer.
Aside from the price there is ultimately one reason to get a manual, because you enjoy changing your own gears.

Yep, one's better for road rallies, which of course everybody does on a daily basis...

I engine brake everyday with my 7 speed auto. I also stick to 5 gears in the city, and other situations. I did the same in my Tiptronic Audi. There's very little reason to get a stick with the new autos, and the main reason is the lack of people who can drive one.

Go valet your car around here, and the 17 year old kid can't drive a stick. Get a DD or friend to drive you home "man, I haven't driven a stick in 5 years" there goes your clutch.

I'm not going to argue that there's a bunch if internet racers in here but I think you should stick to your "drive a land boat" crusade. :)

Some of us have to get to work and would prefer to shave a few seconds off the commute. Lower commute time = more time for life, but hey...at least I count the drive in as living.

Ah, come on, I've got you all whupped, I was driving a 1994 Ford Aerostar 3L with a stick! Now that was power! Everytime you shifted gears you could feel the car vibrating with all the intense amount of torque. This thing went from 0-60 in a good 15-20 seconds!
