My day has been bad and this makes it worse.:(

I can now look forward to my Creative SQ3500 Live and Nvidia NV20 GeVodooForce:|

All we need now to have a perfect monopoly is for Intel to buy out AMD and Microsoft to find some way to get rid of Linux. It will be done:(

Right during Christmas season, too. This is like a bomb that waiting to explode. The warning signs are there, but people just keep ignoring it, while convincing others it's not over. It's indeed true that the lights are off at 3dfx buildings.

RagingGuardian that's pretty much how I feel, though AMD aint going nowhere.

I'll say what I said to NFS4:

oh well, a rebellion will start. this may be a sad day, however it is a fact of life. IMHO, life in the universe goes in a cycle:

-domination by one side
-creeping up of a rebellion, or multitudes of rebellions
-competition
-total defeat for one side, thus starting the cycle again.

it's in Star Wars, and it's fit EVERYTHING I've seen in my 17 years on this planet, things are not about to change now, unless a fundamental change occurs in the Human race.

"What you might end up seeing is a backlash from former 3dfx customers umping the bandwagon to Ati now. We saw the same thing when Intel started thinking they were the only alternative when it came to Cpu's and motherboards. Once AMD and VIA started coming out with strong competition people went out and bought them in droves just because they hate supporting giants."

-Dean

sounds like me somewhat.. however, in the companies that I DO get products from, it's not because I feel they are the underdog. it's because it's the BEST upgrade for the price.

I bought this V3 last year. for ~$130 Canadian. it's the only card at that price STILL (MX? prepare to spend over $200 Canadian). PLUS, 2D quality isn't that great, and overal card quality isn't that great period (dependability, based on numerous factors, like Drivers and card manufacturers being idiots).

I bought this Aureal Vortex 2 soundcard last year as well. there's no question about it. nearly everyone agrees, this card was superior (except for diehard creative fans), in nearly every way, save one or 2.

1) not quite as flexible as Live! series.
2) MIDI wasn't as good

everything else the Vortex 2 simply ruled on. CPU usage using the same API's? no difference.. quality and features? BIG DIFFERENCE! Driver updates? BIG DIFFERENCE.

this also lets me down, pointing to the fact that the world runs on Money. I hate this system, I'd LOVE to create my own country, with it's own, unique set of rules. I had a nice big discussion with my sisters boyfriend, his dad, my dad's friend, and my grandpa.

however, as I read what I've written, I found I've gone off topic somewhat.. ahh screw it, I'll continue, even though I know that most people bypass my long boring posts.

countries currently run according to how they run their economy. in prosperous days, what you need is a country willing to take risks, and invest in companies in the name of progress.

however, in not so good days (like the 'dirty thirties'), you need a country that can take control of all of it's money (I don't remember the specifics we all worked out, I wish I had a tape recorder..). basically, traders get their right to trade what they want taken away, allowing the government to take the big view unlike what traders do (they want money, and don't care about the consequences).

that is, of course, assuming that the world still runs on money.. I have yet to begin figuring out the best way to run a country period, if the world did not run on money, but on the want to improve ones self (psychologically (become a better person)..

Basically 3dfx is now the rotting hulk of what was once a promising company. All the technology they had or were ever working on now belongs to NVidia. This is truly a sad day.

Obviously this move by NVidia was prompted by the multiple challenges presented by 3dfx - next generation Rampage and Fear products as well as the lawsuit. I sure as hell hope we see at least some 3dfx tech, and hopefully a change in the character of NVidia.

<< Our long term goal is to make our 3D graphics technology available to everyone who can benefit from it. We want to be the best graphics solution, top-to-bottom, in each market segment from entry level to high-end. So if you have $100, $300, $500 or $1,500 dollars to invest in graphics for your computer, the best choice for you will be a solution from NVIDIA. >>

There you have it, you can expect to start paying through the nose for NVidia products.

I'd like to edit that.. :)

There you have it, you can expect to start paying through the nose for high-end NVidia products. the equivelent of the GTSU will stay at ~$500, which means the NV20 will probably be that much upon release. and don't count on prices going down quickly either, unless ATi comes out with a super product..

LOL everyones bitching but yet some of you paid $500+ for SLI V2s.

Nvidia has every price point covered. From low end to professional(their chipset with intergrated video to the $1,500 card). Im sure NV20 will come in two flavors, a $350 and a $500, with GTS's dropping in price.

Also everyone seems to be ragging on Nvidia. However, they WERE the underdog, until 3dfx bought STB and everything went down hill.

Don't know how Hardware knew but he did say look for something on Friday or something to that extent.

Everyone knew something was gonna happen today. Today was the day they announced their earnings, this was known far in advance. The fact that the earnings announcement was delayed so long hinted at the fact that they were going to say something else as well. Hardware is basically a rabin Nvidia fanboy who was predicting the doom of 3dfx all along; hacking 3dfx products, management, pr, etc.. From his perspective, it could have turned out in exactly the opposite way.

SJ, paying 500 for a v2 sli was the thing back then for speed around 50 to 60 fps in like 800x600 high resolution. Now adays you can get that high resolution beyond 60fps for cheap. We shouldn't have to pay so much for a video card Today. 250 is the most i will pay for a video card. Matter of fact any video card that cost more than a 1.2 gig tbrid is too much today.

Not that it's a real 'good' thing, but it might actually be weird buying an Nvidia card one year and it's not obsolete for about five years. I know it's not really better than technology moving forward, but it may give time for programmers to improve code rather than just pump out more data to the video code as a way of improving visuals.

Its obvious that nvidia is a better company than 3dfx, look who went bankrupt ;) For me 3dfx never was a big comptetitor and realy no threat to nvidia because 3dfx had like nothing of the OEM market, and thats where you decide how good a company realy is.

Whats realy strange is that nVidia just bought their technology, everything else is owned by "3dfx" still, its just a worthless company now, even more worthless I mean ;)

This last statement from Firing Squads article worries me the most:

$1500!!!!!!!!!!!! What the F@ck? That is ridiculus. Do they meaning high end as in consumer high end or professional high end? Greedy bastards

Calm down Rectalfier. It?s for those professional graphics cards. Geez, some of you guys are over reacting. I mean... most of you wanted 3DFX to die, now its sad because Nvidia bought 3dFX's future products? I guess they're automatically the bad guys since it?s the giant now.

(Yeah I know it?s sad that 3DFX went down, but most of you are jumping ships because everyone else is doing it)

BTW - I support ATI and Matrox.

Hehehe GopherMobile I was sort of thinking the same thing.

I'm wondering if the market will calm down a bit so your new card isn't obselete in 2 weeks and give games a chance to catch up.

I don't know what to think of this. As I said I'm willing to give nVidia the benefit of the doubt for now and assume they'll continue to make great products...but I am worried.

actually, the reason people are afraid of higher prices, is becuase they want to STAY AWAY from having to pay $500 for the top of the line gaming card. people don't want to buy the card suited to them from the companies perspective, they want to get as much as they can.

so what do we want? a return to the TNT2 vs Voodoo 3 days, where the competition was soo fierce, the prices dropped drastically, even the high end cards weren't that expensive. compared to today, with the Geforce 2 Ultra, running for about $500 american.

so everyone who is worried about prices has a valid concern, which won't be heard until the next competitor to nVidia becomes apparent.

GopherMobile, nice observation, lets hope SOMETHING good comes of this immediately..

nVidia still has a long way to go before they can really compete with the big boys (Matrox, ATI). They really need to build up their OEM and performance 2D stuff before they can be a real competitor.

If you thought $500 or $600 was a bundle for a video card, hold on to your hat cause you ain't seen nothing yet.

holy sh!t, I just woke up from 12 hours of sleep and I read this??? Is this a nightmare or what?

If you think about it might actually be GOOD, NV20 w/ TwinView, HSR, and quality FSAA? That is if they keep the price low...

Nvidia is up there with ATI as far as Desktop OEM deals. They do not really have that long of a way to go.
