One can view this as a bad thing, but I see it as a good opporunity. Monolopy? Nvidia and 3dfx are not the ONLY chip makers in the business. They are simply recognized as the performance leaders.

3dfx has been dieing slowly of late, and I think the Nvidia acquisition will allow us to see 3dfx technology sooner than wey MAY have. Hell, a combined board based on Nvidia and 3dfx technology would ROCK.

Who knows what the future may bring ...

ATi is in for a warm time. Although the Radeon II will supposedly be an amazing card, on par with the NV20, it will be much harder to go up against nVidia with gigapixel tech.

Nvidia will probably shelve deffered rendering technology as they wouldn't want to compete with themselves :|

Why would they shelve it? It'd make sense, as they can use it in future techs. It is even rumoured to be in the X-box, because with a UMA architecture, bandwidth is incredibly important, and even with 128bit DDR dram, its still nowhere near the bandwidth that they are getting NOW on their graphics core - for x-box to compete, they need some bandwidth saving technology....one possibility is deffered rendering.

This really pisses me off now :| God dam it!!!

ARRGHHH!! :|:|:|

there goes any competition we had. Now we have a intel in the makes.

You know the XBox sounds more appealing to me to buy. Then I wouldn't have to upgrade any more...

I agree BK, I hope anand hires dave if this falls threw, no wait dave knows ppl at nvidia and in good terms too. Still hope anand hires hires him. Now if 3dfx falls under you can rest assure that nvidia's NV20's MSRP being 500 it will be alittle more than that, better think of 500 for an oem and at least 600 for a retail version of their new cards. Damn why didn't Quantum do this before nvidia did?? Damn damn damn...

DOJ, are you seeing this?

What are you guys ignorant? NVidia is going to jackup prices that much. Not enough people would buy their products if they did that. Their OEM customers would be extremely pissed off.

This is on 3dfx's site...says letter to customers:

To our valued customers:

We would like to take this opportunity to thank you for the support you've given 3dfx over the years. Through all our ups and downs, we've always been proud of our extremely loyal customers and fans. That's what makes our actions of today so difficult.

It's no secret that 3dfx has been in a very poor financial state for some time. Although we've done our best to avoid taking drastic action, we have finally been forced to admit that there is no possible way we can continue in our current state. As such, we have negotiated an agreement with nVidia that will allow us to provide the best possible result to our creditors, investors, employees and customers.

Under this agreement, nVidia will acquire certain, specific assets from 3dfx including technology, company and product brands and other assets. In addition, the 3dfx board of directors has recommended to our shareholders the dissolution of the company over the next few months. Until that time, however, 3dfx products will remain available at various retail and online locations, and we will continue to support our current and future customers. For additional information, please see today's press releases and FAQ posted elsewhere on this site.

While we firmly believe this agreement is in the best interest of all involved, we deeply regret these actions. Again, we want to extend our sincerest thanks to everyone one of you who helped 3dfx revolutionize 3D graphics and 3D gaming on the PC. Rest assured, the 3dfx legacy will live on through the combined strengths of these two great companies.

Sincerely,

Scott Sellers
3dfx Founder and CTO

I don't like this statement on NVidia's site. Sounds like they have aspirations to be the next Microsoft of video cards. :(

Well Intel only as AMD to worry about & AMD are doing well,Nvidia still as competition in ATi & Matrox.

I wonder why some other company didn't buy 3dfx... like ATI or Matrox or something... why Nvidia!

Knowing what you all know now... would go back in the past and buy a V5 5500 over a GTS to keep the competition alive?

john, if not nvidia buying them, then all the current lawsuits on hand would still be on hand and be just assumed by the next purchasing company, it makes sense for nvidia to buy 3dfx....ends all the pending lawsuits

this comes as no shock to me. Of course, Dave has been singing a different tune, but I digress.

<< Will Dave still have a job?? I sure hope so >>

He will, at Nvidia, as long as they don't read these forums.

Uh what are customers gonna do?...Refuse to buy a video card for their PC? Without a video card your PC is as good as a doorstop. OEM's? ya remember how Intel gouged them before AMD came along and was competitive with Intel chips? AMD has been around along time but only recently were they competitive enough to stop Intel's price gouging. Do I smell a repeat performance by Nvidia? *sniff sniff*...
